You've been discovering Wilco haven't you? I saw you were DLing YHF earlier and now A Ghost Is Born.

I would give your left nut to be able to discover Wilco again for the first time.

I remember listening to some of Sky Blue Sky around when it came out and thinking it pretty blah/overrated. But I decided to give YHF a listen on their website (for FREE!) recently and was fucking blown away. Bought AGIB yesterday for $7 and was also blown away. Chicago just seems to be my musical kin-city these days. Love Tortoise, Gastr del Sol and Jim O'Rourke, Wilco, etc. Guess I'll give Sky Blue Sky another listen just to make sure, but modage just might be correct.

They suck now if you don't understand what they were trying to do with SBS.
Granted, SBS wouldn't never rank up there with Summer Teeth or YHF for me, but they were going for a smooth crisp 70's sound with really solid musicianship. They can't keep making noise records or 60's stuff every time.
It will be interesting to see where they go for the next album.
(that reminds me - i need to download the free ep you can get via an official SBS cd).
I am Torgo. I take care of the place while the Master is away.

They don't suck now. Modage sucks now!

SBS is underrated. It's a fun album. I don't know why everyone shits on it so much.

Wayne Hancock - Tulsa

Honky-tonk swing that isn't just tolerable, but pretty damn nifty.

Out of sync with one, in sync with another... unsuspected

SBS is a lot better once you see them perform the songs live.

Like I said, I'll have to give it a real listen soon.

EDIT: this is better than Release the Stars. i thought the songwriting on that album wasn't so memorable. except for Going to a Town. oh, Slideshow was alright too. anyway the point is that he's capable of much better, something like the Art Teacher swallows every single track on RTS. the fact that he's doing covers on this judy garland tribute concert helps a lot. Puttin on the Ritz is my favorite right now.

On last.fm, there's a monthly "mix tape" group I joined. Every month, members are teamed up randomly with others in the group and based on a given theme, you have to create a mix for that person you're partnered with. I used to be more into making mixes, not so much anymore... Probably because I realized I'm not so good at it as I thought I was.

You can download the mix Here

it's fucking awesome!

The Perineum Falcon

I've recently become obsessed with Blood on the Tracks and have been listening to it, pretty much nonstop, while I'm at work (we have rhapsody here).

However, I've decided to listen to this today:
We often went to the cinema, the screen would light up and we would tremble, but also, increasingly often, Madeleine and I were disappointed. The images had dated, they jittered, and Marilyn Monroe had gotten terribly old. We were sad, this wasn't the film we had dreamed of, this wasn't the total film that we all carried around inside us, this film that we would have wanted to make, or, more secretly, no doubt, that we would have wanted to live.

Dismemberment Plan - Emergency and I

I swear to god that this is one of the greatest rock albums I've ever heard, and it never gets old.

Smells like Jr. High in here. I swear to god that is one album i am absolutely sick of and i honestly hope i never hear again. I used to listen to it non stop on repeat. However, Travis Morrison is such a little bitch. Even though i've put E & I out of my life my roommate listens to Morrison's solo cds like craCK. And it has just made me despise his voice.

I absolutely agree about Morrison's solo stuff - it's pretty appalling. The Dismemberment Plan, on the other hand, are what popular rock music would sound like if it had the balls to both experiment energetically with the four-piece sound and the honesty and talent to write beautiful, original pop melodies. I can understand the antipathy towards Morrison as a person, but that doesn't change the fact that he and the band made some truly amazing songs (the ones on this record in particular).
