Yeah he had a heavy accent, but are we assuming that's her dad?

I was curious about that guy, but "dad" didn't cross my mind.

Also, if we're assuming he's her dad, are we assuming that's a flashback to her home country? Or that she's an exchange student who decided to bring her dad with her haha

Is it possible that an exchange student brings their family with them? If we're assuming Este and Danielle are playing Alana's sisters in the film, I mean Danielle seems to be there all the time, she's in both the scene with this "dad" and the scene later where Alana talked about hanging out with Gary all the time. Or are Este and Danielle not playing her sisters? Are they just playing girl friends who lived with Alana?

Drenk

They're the Haims sisters travelling through time and need to go back to the future at the end of the movie.
Ascension.

With an post-credit scene where they reveal their real birth name "Haim", setting up the sequel "The Haim Sisters"!

There's been a lot of talk about the runtime. And I'm surprised that after MGM gave that bogus hour 40 runtime that people seemed happy about that!?

Based off what we've seen, This seems like a good 2 hour movie to me. And I want that. The more story the better. Hell, make it 2 and a half hours! I know a short one would be more accessible, but I don't care about box office. And I don't think Paul does either at this point.

Anyways. Speculating is fun...

I'm fine with a short runtime, but if they announced an two and half hours runtime I'd be more excited, only because it would be more surprising and make me rethink what this movie will be.

Punch-Drunk Love was 90 minutes, but this seems to have several more important characters. The "I'm coming for you Nancy!" seems to be an climatic scene that would only make sense if that character had some sort of arc, right? And then there's the Cooper and Safdie characters, as well as some others that has to have bigger roles...

90% sure that's Mordechai Haim, the actual Haim paterfamilias.

Yeah, that's Pops.  The only Haim missing in this capture is Mom.  If Mom is still with us, I'm certain she'll appear somewhere in the film.  (She was Paul's art(?) teacher when he was in high school.)

(There are a ton of family and friends in this film.  A full accounting, if possible, would be fascinating.)

Yes Mom is definitely still with us. I think she's his elementary school art teacher? I remember the girls talked about their mom teaching Paul of a very young age and having to tie him to his chair.

This is swirling around on r/PTA as well.  It feels too much like trying to force the facts to fit the theory, rather than vice-versa.

But as long as we're overthinking this, how old do we think Alana (the character) is likely to be?  18, 19, 20?   Certainly not the 29 that real-life Alana is...

Anything under 20 would be weird and automatically make the movie bad.  :yabbse-smiley:

(I'd like to amend my earlier post.)

I don't have time to look for it right this second, but what's this about Gary and a cigar and a restaurant?   I haven't noticed that in all of my frame-by-framing to date.

Entering into the speculation game, I guess that she recently graduated from high-school, and her dad tries to persuade her to leave the house and go to college instead of doing part-time jobs (Fat Bernie's, Wachs' office etc) - I'm trying to connect their scene with Bowie's lyric. So, around 19?

Οn the other hand, how old is Gary supposed to be? 16-17? The phrase "his 15 y.o. friends" indicates he's older than 15 imo, otherwise she could say just "his friends".

The controversial cigar frame:

So after a few times watching closely it started looking like there's actually no cigar just fingers crisscrossing and the "cigar" is the index finger of Cooper's left hand.
