I say this as someone who has no thoughts about this issue as it is presented in the film and won't until I've seen it, so this relates more to some of the discussions that have been going on on social media and the like, but comparisons to Phantom Thread or other PTA films (or lumping it in with "age gap discourse" which I've seen elsewhere online) seems to be a deliberate misreading of the situation: there is a world of difference between weirdness or moral ambiguity between two consenting adults in a relationship, and an adult and someone who cannot legally consent; they are not remotely comparable ethically.

Yes. This is very deliberate and, frankly, weird.  The critics saying there was an "age gap" discourse about Phantom Thread are lying. Trust me: I'm an obsessive PTA fan and was monitoring social media. Only two articles from random websites tried to bait some "discourse" about "toxic masculinity"—they weren't taken seriously since the movie is obviously making fun of Woodcock's worst tendencies (while taking him seriously, of course), and were published weeks or months after the release of the movie. It was more: "what if people criticize the age gap in Phantom Thread, lol?" They confused imaginary criticism with actual criticism. They're now trying to blend two different situations.
Ascension.

Just a quick question is this what the forum is going to be filled up with untill the film is fully released? because if so i might stay away for a while its getting tiresome this age gap discussion.

QuoteIt's so interesting that that was improvised because you quickly correct yourself and say you're 25. That left me wondering if she'd been lying about her age the whole time, which is a great little character detail.

Anderson: Absolutely, and that's a very important point. I love that she caught herself because there were endless conversations about "how old is she exactly?" before we started. I liked the idea that emerged on day two, in that improv, of, "You are 28 and you're lying about your age. You're already at this place where you're nervous about hanging out with these 15-year-old kids, so that's another great reason to lie."

So she's really 28?

Anderson: I think she is.

Haim: I kind of like to keep people guessing.

Anderson: What's important is that she's so full of sh-t.

That's a wrap, folks. She has anxiety!

THANK YOU! Third Wave Feminists(most of them liberal white women) have been trying to make this comparison and it's just so ridiculous.

My take on the 'age gap discourse' is that most of the people complaining about it on Twitter seem like weirdos. Saw someone with a lot of followers tweeting that they almost ran out of the theatre because they were so disgusted by what they were witnessing. I mean, seriously, get a grip!

Anyway, looking forward to January so that I can finally see it and confirm that it is indeed very good, as per usual, and that Twitter is just being dumb again.

Are those of us that were upset or confused by the "terrible marketing strategy" (or lack thereof) weeks ago at all mollified by what we've seen in the last few days?  Just curious.

I certainly am. Paul is doing so much press, giving juicy interviews, and that kind of earned media is gold for this movie.

I guess there's an argument to be made that the premiere was lackluster though.

Maybe they'll be a bigger, "official" premiere (with media) in December before the wide release?

That's what I was thinking, too. They will still have plenty of time once they're done with Gucci's PR, which opens this week.

"As an amiable, sometimes satirical odyssey populated with outsized characters, "Licorice Pizza" reminded me of an Elaine May film" Holy shit! Never expected this namedrop but damn.

QuoteBut [the 70s] is now almost half a century removed from today — the same distance from the '70s to the flappers and speakeasies of the '20s.

This a mindfuck that I want you guys to think about in what ever decade is 50 years on from the decade you graduated from high school...

I appreciate the suggestion, but no thank you, Wilberfan, I will not be doing that.

My favorite reviewer. If only he reviewed more films, then maybe I could say goodbye to Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic altogether.
