Susan Morse would reign in QT and ever since her untimely passing, his last three movies have been exercises in indulging his worst habits.

Sally Menke is not Susan Morse.

Haha Yes! I have Licorice Pizza on the brain. Glad that your Moderating skills picked up on that out of what I said in my post.

I'm a relatively new mod, still learning. So, I'm taking a more passive stance. I'd rather not stoke any fires, as Wrongright has been banned and i do believe all this fervor is parcel to its limited release. But I do agree, of course. And I also understand the frustration!

Your instincts in the second paragraph make sense to me; your comments in the first paragraph, like, duh,  there's no need for insults and squabbles detract from discussing the filmmaking. I can agree without commenting on your post but now you've asked me to do-so, so I shall.

Thanks man, I appreciate this mature response. Can I ask why Wrongright was banned, though? From what I've seen, he never used profanity or attacked members personally. If he was banned for constantly posting mixed reviews(I don't think any reviews calling LP a "bad movie" even exist as of this moment) that's cause for concern when it comes to a discussion board. If he was banned for something else that went on behind the scenes, then that's another thing.

An attempt to not be too spoilery:

This movie was wall-to-wall laughs.  Paul iz one of the best filmmakers at making a movie so unsettled (not unsettling) yet comedy through and through. Soggy with a tension underneath I want to write about but that requires more detail so perhaps the other thread.

There's an early gobsmack sound you'll hear in the film; it rivals There Will Be Blood in intensity and it's a funny fkn beat.

It's also going to inspire, I've know doubt. Gary Valentine and Alana Kane are hungry and they have so much fun stumbling into their passions. So whether it's the filmmaking flourishes or the character it seeks to emphasize, we have here some hearts of gold ready to refract onto audiences.

(also the Haim family are adorbz in this)

I think some clarity is needed on this topic, so I will do my best.

I'll put the TLDR up-front: When someone is so obnoxious that they create a groundswell of support for their removal, it's probably going to happen.

Longer version:

You made a fair point criticizing a member who used their first couple posts to lash out at wrongright. Personal insults are typically not tolerated. But since those posts happened literally while I was banning wrongright, I figured we could leave them there as an indication of what things had come to. And we try not to judge people too harshly for a one-off outburst — maybe they were having a bad day or were especially frustrated in that moment.

So why would we let that go and ban someone who, as you say, never used profanity or personally attacked anyone? Pardon my French, but there's a certain je ne sais quoi — when someone has a pattern and is repeatedly failing the smell test, sometimes you just know it.

Accusing someone of trolling is a tricky thing, and it's hard to be sure. Personally I went back and forth in wrongright's case. Other cases are more clear. But one doesn't necessarily need to rack up a certain number of infraction points. What's most important is the actual effect they're having on the community. And a community that's not responsive to its members is no fun for anyone.

Just saw this review on letterbox.  Dont know how much of a fan this guy is.

PTA is a talented filmmaker and his talents were on display here. Well, some of them as this is one of his weakest scripts ever. Licorice Pizza is filled to the brim with the worst characters, barely any cohesion in the story, and a lead character that feels like a villain.

I can't fault the actors as they were doing the best with the material given, but I feel bad for young Cooper Hoffman for playing the worst character I've seen all year. Gary Valentine feels like a wish fulfillment wet dream: an awkward boy who is seemingly good at everything and pulls every girl around him. Hoffman does well, but I can't get around his creepy and uncomfortable character.

Alana Haim also had a tough character to root for. Haim carries the film, which is impressive for a debut role...just wish she had a more enjoyable or at least three-dimension character.

Honestly, I imagine when PTA was pitching this idea to ex-girlfriend Fiona Apple is when she decided to write Fetch The Bolt Cutters then and there.

I mean. Daniel Plainview is such a sweetheart, I'm sad I won't be able to tattoo Haim's face on my torso.  :yabbse-sad:

This "review" comes from a Rotten Tomatoes-approved "critic".....

If you're replying to Derekk's now moved post, I can move your reply to that thread too ~
Felt it was a bit too spoiler-y for this thread as it gets into the full structure of plot.

Alma

Bit off topic but I thought it was interesting that Alana's dress in this scene is reminiscent of a couple of Alma's dresses in Phantom Thread. They have similar names as well. Wonder if it's intentional.

wilberfan

Well, the names have no connection.  The film was written for Alana.  I'll defer to Mr. Bridges regarding the wardrobe.
