This is a comment section. But « wait a minute, what the fuck? » is a normal reaction to that synopsis, and PTA playing « but she's actually immature » in the interview should have been prevented by his PR agent, even if they're too busy asking Xixaxers not to film Q&A.  :yabbse-grin:
Ascension.

I'm aware that this is a comment section...

It's not just that age gap thing. Every time I look at the comments on pretty much anything in the culture section of the Guardian website, it's just filled with people dismissing whatever the thing is sight unseen, slagging off the creator of the thing as overrated blah blah blah. I recall that 'We hate life and ourselves' joke at the expense of the Democrat party in The Simpsons; it often pops into my head when I look at the comments on the Guardian. I should probably stop looking...

Some alternate takes (from the Deadline review comments).  In case some of us need a boost:

QuoteSaw it at the DGA Screening last weekend. I was disappointed with the lack of actual structure to the film. It meandered, and ended with so many characters or items just disappearing with no reason.  It's a mess/miss for me.

QuoteI found it boring and too long. If you don't worship at the Church of PTA, skip it.

QuoteIt was mediocre. Main issues are that Alana is not a very gifted actress, and at over 2 hours the 2nd half drags a bit.

These are likely industry people a.k.a. Oscar voters. They're always going to prefer something like Being The Ricardos or Tik Tik Boom, both of which have gotten great reactions so far. Not to mention Belfast. We should put the breaks on a little bit regarding Oscar hopes.

Why do you hate the idea of PTA winning an Oscar for this?

You've never fully explained other than believing it's too "inaccessible". What's the deal?

I don't. Again, I'm just trying to see the full picture. Looks like there's a chance it may get nominated. But these mixed messages are confusing, and that doesn't feel like the recipe for a win. Plus, there's still 3 huge movies yet to premiere (Don't Look Up, Nightmare Alley, and West Side Story).

You will never find a film that doesnt have some mixed reactions. Those films you mentioned already have some negative reviews for them. So again you're not making any sense.

This does raise a good question. If the genders were reversed, how do you think "woke" movie critics, actors, writers, directors, etc would be reacting to this? Would it be as lauded?

(Speculation spoilers? Not sure.)

When the younger party is doing the pursuing, and it's not consummated, I think that can reasonably be considered less problematic.

That's probably the case with this movie, but I'm honestly just guessing.

In terms of gender, I think most people would agree with this — an older guy / teen girl relationship is far more common and typically has a more troubling power dynamic than the reverse.

PTA: the filmmaker's filmmaker. Nice that all of these much more commercially-successful directors constantly promote his work.

It's because he's doing the type of work they really want to do but don't have the guts to do. They want the respect and prestige he has without risking box office failure or popularity amongst casual movie fans. Brett Ratner is the perfect example of this.

I'm really curious when Xixaxers in general will be seeing LICORICE PIZZA for the first time.  Indulge me?

Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.
