One of my favorite local bands.  They tear that shit up in concert.

Do they?  Because they sound awful low-key on the material I've heard.

I'm not sure what you've heard from them, but yeah, they can be pretty rowdy.

I don't know why I dug this out tonight... it's the first time I've listened to it in at least ten years.

Pink Floyd, The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973)

Putting aside all the druggie mythology and the hippie vibe around this album, it really is a brilliant piece of work, and SO technologically advanced for its time it wasn't even funny.  These guys were using "samples" when they weren't even samples yet, they were just little bits of reel-to-reel tape that they looped and spliced and played with.  They were also playing with the concept of stereo, which most recordings at the time used to simulate a "live" experience, and turning it into something else altogether...  spooky chuckles coming over your shoulder, soaring gospel voices flying around the room, weird synthesizer bits zipping from side to side of your field of hearing...  no wonder people associated it with being all fucked up.  :D

I have some tracks off Dirty South.  While good, they are anything but rowdy.  I take it they go the rowdy route on Decoration Day?

I'm listening to:

The Saints, best of.  Criminally underrated and too often ignored, these Australians served out some great punk.

It's more that they get a lot rowdier live than they do on record.  They're not a band that tries to duplicate the CD tracks onstage...  they play as loud as the Jack Daniels moves them.  :D

Quote from: StefenHow come you guys just post a cover and never give any insight to what you think about the album?

You're right, and I'm going to abide by this advice in the future.

Home sweet home.  Can't wait to get that record.

What does it sound like?  Compared to "Michigan" and "Seven Swans," I mean...    Favorite songs?  Overall thoughts?

If you're going to post an album that nobody has heard yet, you need to give up a little bit of a review, or else we're going to think you just found a cover image online.

honestly, i had never heard the guy (heard of, but not listened to) till the other day when i downloaded that song and it kinda stuck with me so i hunted around and found Seven Swans which i've played a few times and like and just finally gotten Illinois.  (it took me a while to download it in all those parts).  i will say, i like what i've heard.  i will say that.  perhaps more Sufjan thoughts from me soon in his thread.

Dear Stefen.

I like this album.

It is good.
"As a matter of fact I only work with the feeling of something magical, something seemingly significant. And to keep it magical I don't want to know the story involved, I just want the hypnotic effect of it somehow seeming significant without knowing why." - Len Lye
