Veteran Helmers Seeking First-Ever Director Win Roar Back Into Oscars Race

While "Licorice Pizza" isn't as directly autobiographical as "Belfast," the comic romance might be his most personal. He used the true stories of his friend, producer Gary Goetzman, to capture the mood and feel of 1970s San Fernando Valley better than any film since, well, his 1998 porn industry saga "Boogie Nights."

"You just sort of substitute a movie camera with a waterbed or a pinball palace, and I was probably an extension of Gary," Anderson said at a Nov. 11 New York City screening this reporter attended. "I didn't exactly have that kind of charisma or that way with words — he's one of a kind — but the stories he told [offered] an opportunity to enter a world that I remember very well. And having [four] children, [it allowed me] to show them the world that I grew up in."

But Anderson, whose work has been as varied as "There Will Be Blood" and "Phantom Thread," downplayed the suggestion that he was entering a reflective phase. "This just came like a very generous drop into my lap. It was irresistible and felt important to pursue. Don't worry, I can still be cranky!" he cracked. "But I had a friend, [late AMPAS president] Tom Sherak, a great man, who said [after watching], maybe it was 'The Master,' 'You're really, really good at this, but you should make one every once in a while that people actually understand.' I remember putting this together and I thought, 'This is for you, Tom.'"

This picture is making me very happy. I'm sure Taylor Swift is a fan of Paul's work. Her boyfriend is pretty much Paul's biggest fan, very vocal about wanting to work with Paul and watching Paul's movies at home all the time. She had helped promote HAIM's videos acknowledging Paul as their director on her social media. And her song "tolerate it" is basically about what's going on in Phantom Thread. Seeing TS and Paul crossing paths this way is fun.

I ended up deleting my twitter today.

Whats killing me is the obnoxious outrage at every turn and horrible discourse from people I would otherwise agree with 90% of the time.

The endless moralizing and scolding over movies that you were never gonna watch (The Last Duel, Licorice Pizza) is exhausting. Film twitter is a cesspool of fake progressives and people who don't even like movies. Their takes barely contain even the tiniest bit of media literacy. Not gonna let them ruin movies.

Stuff like that and every big film twitter account seeing Licorice Pizza upwards of 3(!) times and vague posting about how it's the most transcendent experience they've had in years, when you live in Oklahoma and won't get the chance to see it on film has definitely contributed to this mood lol.

Thats the big problem with these obscenely long limited releases is that there is a fucking shitshow discourse weeks before normal people actually watch the fucking thing.

If you are annoyed by online discourse, I question your passion for film. Just ignore it, who cares. Close your eyes, sign out. Do whatever you can to enjoy what you love. I'm not going to let anything disrupt me from the experience of a PTA movie
