Is it safe to assume by now the trailer won't be released online today? Isn't it commonly @10am PDT?

Montclair

The trailer won't be released this week.

What makes ya say that?

For Phantom Thread it was - plot description released by social media accounts Friday, trailer Monday. You assuming the same schedule here?

Also I really hope the trailer released online is the exact same as is being shown on film right now. I wanna see THAT one

Find Your Magali

I always dreamed of writing a screenplay loosely based on "Levon."
There's so many 1970s lyrics full of storytelling inspiration.

For me, some Counting Crows stuff is that way, too. I could see film scenes based on Adam's poetry

I think you can expect so -- part of how the crowd knew it was Licorice and not PDL running first was that it carried the latest MPAA greenband at the top.

Find Your Magali

I don't know how much I really buy into it, but I found this commenter's post on a movie blog somewhat interesting...

As someone who was born and raised in Los Angeles, I can confirm that there is a creeping dread that hangs in the air, a darkness around the edges, an atmospheric manifestation of all the broken dreams this city harbors, and in a lot of late 60s and 70s early 80s films, like Aloha Bobby and Rose (the opening credits, scored to "Benny and the Jets," captures this feeling exactly [as well as Star 80, which is filthy with it]), this feeling is palpable, almost as if the celluloid the film was shot on absorbed it. I sensed none of that in Once Upon a Time. None. I just happen to think PTA is more sensitive to this sensation. He's latched onto it before, captured it in fits and starts, but I think this film will be drenched in it.

He sensed...none of that, in Once Upon a Time?  :ponder: Okay.

It will be inevitable, it seems, from this havent-seen-it-yet perspective, that comparisons between the two films will happen.  Might be apples and oranges, might be Galas and Red Delicious.  As someone with a now infamous troubled relationship with OUATIH, it will make for an interesting discussion, to be sure.

Tonight.

(I'll write this every night until the trailer grants me mercy.)

Trailer might not drop this week with TIFF happening? MGM probably doesn't want to lose the buzz

Yeah, the fact that it builds up to an infamous night in history where one of the characters was brutally murdered in real life doesn't create ANY dread.  :saywhat:

People on Letterboxd already compare Inherent Vice to OUATIH which is so absurd.  I wouldn't worry about these comparisons if you didn't like OUATIH. Most people just lack imagination in comparisons.

There's no buzz to lose. A small fraction of movie geeks are the only ones talking about "Licorice Pizza" right now. The biggest name in this is Bradley Cooper and he only has a small supporting role. There are no official photos or posters at the moment. The studio and Paul fumbled this whole project -- big time. Unless it gets over 5 nominations, including one for Best Picture, this will go down as his lowest grossing movie(adjusted for inflation) yet. "Inherent Vice" had an impressive cast of movie stars and Pynchon's first adaptation going for it and it only made $14.7 million worldwide.

I say this as a big fan of his, but his name alone isn't enough to get people excited about a movie starring two unknowns(HAIM is an indie band with a niche following) in the way that a Tarantino, Nolan or Wes Anderson film with the same exact cast and plot would. Plus, the title is already off-putting. This whole situation is an example in how NOT to build a buzz for an indie/art-house film without any big stars in lead roles.

I think it's hard to imagine PTA didn't take inspiration from OUATIH, which famously arted up LA to look like the hollywood of QT's youth and sort of kept it like that for weeks, especially after he had to do a similar period in IV but was restricted to mostly interiors and found it very limiting to recreate the period on a budget.

That doesn't mean it'll be like it as a film, but I think that aspect is an obvious connection and isn't just incidental.

And IV and OUATIH are completely different as films, but still worth comparing since they both talk about similar periods, I think Once Upon a Time and Licorice Pizza will be equally different, but will still be worth comparing as needle-drop heavy period depictions of California.

I. truly suspect that OUATIH was Tarantino's response movie to IV.

Tarantino claims he began writing OUATIH before he wrote Hateful Eight and that script famously leaked before Inherent Vice came out, so I don't think that really lines up with the timeline. Aside from them both taking place in California in 1969, what do they really have in common?
