Clooney & Soderbergh Talk Ocean's Eleven Sequel

Empire Online chatted with George Clooney and director Steven Soderbergh about the Ocean's Eleven sequel, which reunites the entire cast from the first film:

After being bowled over by the star power of Steven Soderbergh's ensemble heist movie, Ocean's 11, the news that a sequel was on the cards came as very welcome news indeed. Reuniting the entire cast from the first film, which featured the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle the second film has been mooted for a 2004 start. George Clooney confirmed his involvement to us at last night's Solaris premiere, while director, Steven Soderbergh revealed a few exclusive plot details.

While the first film focused on a single, elaborate heist to take the proceeds from three of Las Vegas' casinos, Ocean's 12 will involve no less than three separate heists for Danny Ocean and his team of skilled larcenists. Upping the scale, Soderbergh will be trying to top the first film without exceeding its budget. The film will also be filmed entirely in Europe this time around, providing a new setting - and presumably some cheaper production costs - for the sequel.

"I had an idea a year ago that I started kicking around," said Soderbergh. "I spoke to everyone who was involved and they all seemed willing to come back. So we're hoping a year from right now we'll start shooting."

Ocean's 12 will be George Clooney's fourth collaboration with the director, so what's the actor's fascination with Soderbergh's style of filmmaking? " He's just like one of the best directors in the business," Clooney explained. "You want to work with the good guys and he's a really good guy."

I liked Ocean's Eleven but always felt the similarities of it with Out Of Sight. I prefer Out of Sight because Ocean's always had the feeling that it was a Hollywood film that made to feel like one. Thing is, it was clever and had great chemistry between the actors. Maybe with scaling the production value down with the next one, they can get that rarer feeling that they got in Out of Sight.

all i can say is please no....the movie had great style, but little substance. and i know what you'll say..."it was a fun movie." sure but soderbergh is capable of much more. and a reprisal of Cheadle's role in that movie would really be annoying. please Cheadle make sure this movie never happens.

JC, no not that one

I enjoyed Oceans 11, and I admire Soderbergh for doing off-the-wall stuff like Full Frontal, and I'll go see Oceans 12, but still...I am saddened to hear that Soderbergh is doing a sequel.  Remakes are one thing (Traffic is a remake, after all), but sequels are rarely even half as good as the originals.  I know, I know -- Godfather II, Road Warrior, Empire Strikes Back, etc, are good sequels, but for every Godfather II, there are 100 crappy sequels.  Arthur II or Caddyshack II, anyone?  Or how about Beyond the Poseidon Adventure, Another 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop 2 and 3?

quote from bernie mac about the new production...

"Jerry Weistrauf called me and he said 'Yo Bernie, 'Ocean's Twelve' is in the making.  Everyone's coming back, don't make me look for you okay?  Clear your schedule in February, be there.  Don Cheadle, Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, everyone's coming back, alright?  I don't want to talk to your manager, I don't want to talk to your agent. I'm talking to your black ass personally, now do me a favor and hang up.' So I guess I'm in that one too."

Clooney Confirms Ocean's Twelve Shooting in Rome
Source: Variety

George Clooney confirmed Tuesday that Ocean's Eleven sequel Ocean's Twelve will start filming in Rome in February.

In the sequel, scheduled for a December 10, 2004 release date, the gang is back and has their eye set on a big caper in England. But Terry Benedict hasn't forgotten what happened last time, and is hot on their trail.

As longs as Matt Damon, Clooney, Pitt and Cheaddle are in.......i'm in!

Quote from: bonanzatazI didn't like how Ocean's 11 ended on such a down note. I for one am glad they're making a sequel so I know the 11 DO get away.

Or, Soderbergh could have just cut out those 2 shots of the car following them and all would be well. But noooo!

I realize, my babble is incoherent. Deal with it.

this is proof that this board is relavent because of us, without us this group would be a bunch of uptight fucking phoneys who say they love film but they really dont, because any film lover worth a fuck would love for this film to be fun and great

just like the fact that tommorow MCg will rock !!!!!!!

I don't get it.....Oceans 11 was mildly entertaining but nothing special.  It's no different than any other heist movie, except that someone saw the same rerun episode of Mission Impossible that I saw a couple weeks ago and figured no one would notice.

what dont you get?  it had one of the biggest starfilled casts, and made a shitload of money.  its pretty easy math.  people like to be entertained, oceans 11=entertainment.

I guess you're right.  It doesn't take much to entertain people these days...they cream their pants over whether J.Lo and Ben's wedding is on or off.

I agree about Ocean's Eleven only being mildly good becuase I'm noticing the differences between it and Out of Sight as I have watched that movie a lot lately. Simply, with Out of Sight, the focus was for the characters. Even with the cute dialogue and cut between story going on, the focus was still for the characters. With Ocean's, its for the filmmaking pull off of a clever heist. All else seems situated in the background. The movie is fine and Clooney, Pitt, and Roberts are successful in bringing a good Hollywood coolness to the film. Its just too clever and too much about what isn't important. The scene between Roberts and Clooney on the past relationship is great, but feels oddily placed. Its seems as executed and thought out as a heist itself. Its like a nice emotional moment put in to give the rest of the film some credibility. Out Of Sight felt organic in how it looked at its characters. I still like the movie, though. Its fun and the actors pull off it mostly.

Oceans 12, with being set all over Europe, may be better but runs along the line of cliche in sequel with making the heist not just bigger, but grander in huge ways as it will incorporate the heist of many banks all over Europe, from what I hear.
