Conventions that I'm just sick of seeing such as...
-ever since Saving Private Ryan, every big battle scene has to be shot in a "chaotic" manner

Actually... have you seen "Romper Stomper?"

(POSSIBLE SPOILER) Spielberg nonadmittingly stole the "chaos" from Geoffrey Wright during the chase scene between the Vietnamese and the skinheads.

Check out the commentary on the "Romper" DVD, cause it's pretty good.

I haven't.  I never really thought that the battle scene in Saving Private Ryan was entirely original, but it definitely has changed the way battle scenes are shown today.

I think the disappointing part about Troy, is that the writing was flawed.  Peter O'toole was great, so was Brad Pitt, I really enjoyed Eric Bana, (let's not forget my darling Julie Christie  :-D )...  but the storytelling lacked.  The connections between characters were created without any relationship to back them up.  For example, Agamemnon's relationship and tie to Achillies is rather weak. Did anyone else feel that way?

The romance between Paris and Helen was virtually non-existent.  There was no love to cause a war over.  Rather, it was a bratty child rutting with an unhappy woman.  Futhermore, these two characters were very poorly cast.  Helen of Troy was a modern day American beauty, there was nothing timeless, nor classic, about her.  And rather than Paris being portrayed as an enchanting womanizer, he came across as a lovelorn moper.  The way he touched her wasn't even romantic, although Bloom tried to be.  He just pissed me off... and I'm not referring to his character either.  He was completely mechanical and did not evoke any real emotion other than annoyance.
Classic.

Are you sure you didn't see the porn version?

Calling this movie a porn would be an insult to the adult film industry.
Well, I've got news for you pal, you ain't leadin' but two things: Jack and shit . . . and Jack just left town.

NEON MERCURY

I agree.
Falling in love is the greatest joy in life. Followed closely by sneaking into a gated community late at night and firing a gun into the air.

Perhaps they should have pulled a Lord of the Rings and turned it into a gruesomely long trilogy. That might have worked better for you nerds that require a "story" or "character development"...

But seriously, That'd be pretty cool if they did. The first part would be pre-war events (marriage of Peleus and Thetis, Golden Apple, Iphigenia, Odysseus' and Achilles' hidings, up to, say, the beginning of the war). The second would be the first nine years (Palladium, war stuff) and also all of the Iliad (ending at the funeral of Hector). The third would consist of the second book of the Aeneid (death of Achilles, emergence of Neoptolemus, Sinon, Trojan Horse, Laocoon, the last attack of the Trojans, the Fall) and maybe go a bit into the returns, such as the consequences of Agamemnon's killing of Iphigenia, Odysseus, and the beginning of the Aeneid.  One thing I'd like to see is the use of the gods in a nice and not-lame way like how you see in the stupid made-for-TV movies. Another is an exploration into Achilles' homosexuality, with Antilochus, Troilus, perhaps Patroclus. Man that would be...awesome...

Perverted Thrindle thinks that gay scenes with Achilles would be FANTASTIC!

Thanks Chest for posting with the idea of a trilogy.  Greek Mythology is so ripe with entertainment that if done correctly, it could make phenomenal cinema.  My thoughts for Troy are: less battle, more character development.  But hey, it had Pitt so I should be grateful...
Classic.

I saw this film yesterday. My expectations very high because I've just red The Illiade. Overall I was very dissapointet. Mainly because the script was absolute shit and only 1% of it was according to The Illiade. The ending was so corny and sentimental. Achilleus ("You are a much better king then my king".) and Hector ("I killed a boy today".) got sensitive... Then the Trojan-horse which is not apart of the Illiade! Everything was crazy and messed up. This film has nothing to do with The Illiade or anything Greek. Another thing, the statues and all the art in Troy belongs to a art-period that is between 600-500 bc. and the Trojan-war is 1200 bc.
