Ughhh, not a fan. I went into it with lowered expectations hoping I'd enjoy the film, but I really didn't.  First off, the good things...
Brad Pitt
The achilles / hector fight
Helen's ass
some of the shots showing the scope of the battle

The rest of the film, not a fan....
Orlando Bloom
the script (how can it make such a great story so bad?)
just how boring the film really is...the lulls between the battle scenes feel like lulls
Conventions that I'm just sick of seeing such as...
-ever since Saving Private Ryan, every big battle scene has to be shot in a "chaotic" manner
-scores that have the female chanting or crooning instead of just being instrumental
some of the shots showing the scope of the battle

I guess I'd give it 2/5 stars.  Best Picture contention?  grow up, maybe best picture contention of the films released this week.  Better than LotR?  I'm not a huge Rings fan but don't be silly.

You can't polish a turd.

Troy is a turd.

It wasn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be.

I completely agree with you.  This guy is talentless and overhyped.

It's funny you mention Saving Private Ryan.  When they deploy from the boats and the arrows started flying, the Omaha (?) Beach landing flashed through my mind.

Sorry you didn't like the film.
more than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. one path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. the other, to total extinction. let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.

My cousin's in this.  8)  , he sent us photos of the shooting about a year ago. Fun stuff. I think he gets killed by Brad Pitt's stunt in a part. I'll tell you if I spot him when I see it. who knows when that'll happen...

Saw this last night, and I have to say I liked it for what it was. It was pretty much everything I was expecting/wanting. The action scenes were pretty sweet, especially the Hector/Achilles scene. The main thing that got on my nerves was how clear-cut evil they made Agamemnon; that and how they turned Achilles into a romantic. I think it would have been a notch better had they left good/evil ambiguous like it's supposed to be. Oh, and they really should have just left Aeneas out of the movie. That was definitely the worst individual scene. But I still liked it and I'll probably see it again. The acting was fine enough, notably that of Peter O'Toole, Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Sean Bean, Brian Cox, and Saffron Burrows (I think her name is). Anyways, good fun, good fun.

It's disappointing to hear that the best compliments for the film are along the lines of "good action" and so forth.  When the source material is Homer, I would like to see some more impressive reviews.

Go here to hear segments of the rejected score from Gabriel Yared:

It's under the news section.

-The fight scenes in LOTR are so chaotic I can't even get anything that's going on in them. I may just be slow too.
-The score of LOTR features Enya.

LOTR is long. I remember clearly making the wish to die after 3 hours of ROTK. Probably the most over-rated thing (not film, thing) of all time.

Troy isn't genius by any means, but I found it more entertaining than LOTR. It's silly, the dialogue is cheap, but I don't have to tolerate a 20 minutes long slow motion close up of Liv Tyler crying face.

I don't mind.

As for cheap dialogue... Lord of the Rings had it's fair share. 9 hours worth.

I wasn't a big fan. One of those movies where you just want everyone to die - painfully. Hector was the exception I suppose. Eric Bana was solid through most of the movie. I suppose the good/evil dynamic was supposed to be ambiguous, but I think a poor method of achieving that is making the audience hate pretty much everyone.

It seems like most people are comparing this to LOTR. While watching Troy, I sort of had the feeling that this was what LOTR would have looked like if it had been made by lazy, talentless filmmakers. Personally, I was a big fan of the LOTR trilogy, but I can see its flaws and I don't buy the argument that Troy was better in any way than those films. Just my opinion, though.

One thing we can all agree on, I think - Orlando Bloom was dreadful in this movie. He was solid in LOTR, average at best in Pirates and just awful in Troy. But, he has a pretty face and many fans for some reason, so I'm sure we'll be seeing more of him for at least a few more years.

One more thing - the scene where Polydora (might be wrong about the name, correct me if I am) is trying to kill Achilles: the entire theatre just groaned when they start having sex instead. What a terrible scene.
Well, I've got news for you pal, you ain't leadin' but two things: Jack and shit . . . and Jack just left town.

Yeah, I groaned too... with an aching need that can never be fulfilled.
Classic.

It's not being compared like Coke and Pepsi. Don't have to guard the LOTR castle just yet.

Actually... have you seen "Romper Stomper?"

(POSSIBLE SPOILER) Spielberg nonadmittingly stole the "chaos" from Geoffrey Wright during the chase scene between the Vietnamese and the skinheads.

Check out the commentary on the "Romper" DVD, cause it's pretty good.
