Nintendo warns Wii users not to get too excited

TOKYO (AFP) - Nintendo warned players of its new Wii video game console not to get too carried away when swinging the controller as they could accidently throw it into their television sets.

The warning follows reports that some users have cracked their TV screens when swinging the controller particularly hard to simulate the pitching of a baseball or the swinging of a tennis racket, after their wrist straps snapped.

"Of course before the launch of the Wii hardware Nintendo had a number of tests on the durability of everything including the strap," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told reporters.

"But our understanding right now is that even beyond our expectations people are becoming more and more excited playing with the Wii," he added.

Nintendo, which launched the Wii in the United States last month and in Japan on Saturday, has been getting rave reviews for its new controller and games that shy away from blood-and-guts action.

But the Kyoto-based company said that some users might be getting too excited.

"We are encouraging people to understand that you really don't have to be so excited but rather you need to understand the control and then you're going to be the best player," said Nintendo senior managing director Shigeru Miyamoto.

"We are looking into the situation to see if there are additional methods to encourage people to kind of calm down so they would never throw away the controller itself," he said.

The wireless Wii controller is shaped like a television remote control and engineered with motion sensors and speakers.

By waving or swinging the controller, it can serve as a sword, tennis racket or car steering wheel, with a built-in speaker and rumble feature.

Nintendo leads the global market in portable machines and has been taking aim at beleaguered Sony's lead in stand-alone consoles.

Sony last month rolled out its long-awaited PlayStation 3, a super-fast machine with a high-definition DVD player, which had been beset by delays due to production problems.

thanks pyramid... i will definetly get rid of Call of Duty 3. I want to get Gears of War, and I'm curious about the Godfather games and the Superman games.

For now I just spent my time playing NBA Live 07 and Fight NIght 3. I did not play so much XBOX since I bought it cause ironically my workload tripled since I got it, so those games are easy to just play a match or a fight and turn it off. If I get a good story game and Im hooked, its a problem.

But I will definetly get rid of COD 3 and see what I can get in exchange. Thanks for the tips!

Nintendo to replace broken straps on new Wii console

The Japanese electronic game maker Nintendo said it would replace wrist straps on its new Wii console with a "newer version" after reports of controllers crashing into users' television screens.

But the company denied it was recalling the equipment, saying there was "no problem with the current wrist strap if it is used reasonably and instructions furnished by Nintendo in user manuals included with the game are followed."

"Nintendo is offering to replace the original version of the wrist straps for the Wii Remote with a newer version," the company said in a statement posted on its website.

"We have received some reports that when consumers swing the Wii Remote with the original version of the wrist-strap using excessive force and accidentally let go, the cord connecting the controller to the wrist strap can break, potentially causing the Wii Remote to strike bystanders or objects."

Earlier Friday, Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa said the first version of the controller strap "turned out to be insufficient in its strength for some customers" and would be replaced with a thicker one.

"The decision comes after reports that some users in the United States threw their controllers when playing with Wii sports software," he said.

The new Wii features a controller that can be used as a sword, tennis racket or car steering wheel in the games shown on screen.

Wii set itself apart from Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 consoles by designing a system that got players moving and encouraged family or friends to join in the activity.

But websites dubbed "Wii have a problem" and "Wii damage" have chronicled injuries and wreckage reportedly inflicted by Nintendo game controllers sent awry in the heat of play by wild swipes, loose grips or snapped wrist straps.

Wii controllers have been hurled or thrust into television and computer screens, according to online accounts, breaking windows, glasses, dishes, stereos, walls and ceiling fans.

The official Wii website warns users to "hold the Wii Remote firmly and do not let go" when playing, while taking a moment to dry perspiring hands to prevent injury to people or damage to objects.

Nintendo, which launched the Wii in the United States last month and in Japan on Saturday, has been getting rave reviews for its new controller and games that shy away from blood-and-guts action.

The Wii outsold the rival PlayStation 3 by more than double in the United States in November, according to industry tracking group NPD, which estimates that Nintendo sold 476,140 of its Wii consoles against Sony's 196,580 PS3s.

Consoles shipped from early December already have the thicker strap.

Nintendo also said Friday that it would recall 200,000 AC/DC power adaptors for Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite portable game machines.

Nintendo said some adaptors supplied by Nagano Japan Radio Co Ltd (JRC) between January and October this year could generate excessive heat and possibly cause burn injury during charging.

Nintendo said to date, it had recorded nine such incidents of overheating. One such incident burned a hole in the body of the portable game machine but no injuries have been reported.

The Kyoto-based company said models with defective AC/DC adaptors were sold only in Japan.

Cumulative sales of Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite have so far reached 13 million units.

It's pretty much the reason I'm getting Episode 2. If Valve updates it with new puzzles every now and then, man that'd be amazing.

here's a list of ds games that are going to kick ass next year:

wario: master of disguise

http://www.jeux-france.com/news18241_wario-the-thief-plus-d-images.html

'it's a wonderful world', created by testuya nomura, the guy behind the 'kingdom hearts' games.

final fantasy tactics a2: the sealed grimore
final fantasy xii : revenant wings

final fantasy crystal chronicles: ring of fates
http://www.jeux-france.com/news18464_ffcc-ring-of-fates-en-images.html

at least one of those three has  to be excelent, my vote goes for the crystal chronicles one.

the legend of zelda: phantom hourglass

professor layton and the mysterious village.

just give me a port of the original super smash bros with wi-fi connection and the ds turns automatically into the best gaming system , in my opinion.

I'm sure that eventually a Smash Bros. game will come to the DS and that it will be awesome. I for one can't wait for Phantom Hourglass (haven't been able to play a Zelda game since the N64) and to finally get my sister to understand the utter amazingness that is Link/steal her DS for a week.

You should know that "Twilight Princess" is amazing.  Maybe not quite "Ocarina of Time" but damn close.  It's also the only decent game for the Wii in the present or foreseeable future, so I pretty much paid 300 dollars just to play this game.
