what the fuck man!?  they had better be issuing sets for the mummy and the creature and the invisible man in the US later this year and not just crap out after van helsing comes out.  (mac, know anything about this?)   and mogwai, are those just single film versions and not sets with like 4 or 5 films per character?
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

Good to hear. Thanks!

It's one of the few Fassbinders I've never seen... that, along with In A Year with 13 Moons (from last week) are blind buys... but you know, they're Fassbinder. I'm slowly, steadily, systematically blind-buying pretty much of all of his.

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."

Why is it that I have so very little interest in The Last Samurai? I mean, I never would've been excited by it, but even I'm surprised by my own indifference. Why don't I care if I ever, ever see this movie? Is there something wrong with me? What's to recommend about it? Is there anything at all of interest in it? Help!

This finally, finally came today:

The Last Samurai is a terrible, terrible film.  Besides Ken Watanabe's Mifune-esque performance, there is absolutely nothing redeeming about it.

fine.

John Toll's cinematography is consistently good and there are occassional shots of striking beauty but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's amazing, especially since this is a guy who's definitely capable of better (ie The Thin Red Line).  One thing's for sure it isn't good enough to come near saving the movie.

Bought this last night and I'm watching it again tonight...especially the dance scene at the cafe...and Karina is simply fantastic.

more than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. one path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. the other, to total extinction. let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.
