Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

Wow, yes.  Such a brilliant use of a song.  After I saw the film for a first time, that thing was stuck in my head for a good few weeks.  In a good way.

TheVoiceOfNick

Pretty much every song in Swingers.

Nick

rustinglass

the whole dancer in the dark soundtrack
teenage wasteland-summer of sam
a face of love- dead man walking
girl, you'll be a woman soon-pulp fiction
white rabbit- the game
suzanne and hot love-breaking the waves (I just love those chapter titles, I would like to see a version of the film where the titles would go on through the entire song)

I'm sure there are more, I just can't remember....
"In Serbia a lot of people hate me because they want to westernise, not understanding that the western world is bipolar, with very good things and very bad things. Since they don't have experience of the west, they even believe that western shit is pie."
-Emir Kusturica

Fernando

Strangers in the Night - EWS (instrumental version)
Good Vibrations - Vanilla Sky
I've told every little star - Mulholland Dr.

On a side note: Does anyone know which is the song in Amelie that is played when her 'soon to be boyfriend' is at his work (the porn shop) and he shows the dancing girl the note? It's the song that she's dancing and the last time we see the porn shop.

Thanks in advance.

Boogie Nights - NIGHT RANGER Sister Christian
We gonna do a little Q&A Mr. Worley, and at the risk of sounding redundant please... make your answers Genuine...

TB Sheets- Bringing out The Dead. Totally sinks in with the movie. Lyrics like "I need a drink of water" (Noel is always asking for water), "It ain't funny, it ain't funny" (plays after Frank is laughing at Mr. Burke), "I turned on the radio" (Frank is always on the dispatch radio), and lots more.

"As a matter of fact I only work with the feeling of something magical, something seemingly significant. And to keep it magical I don't want to know the story involved, I just want the hypnotic effect of it somehow seeming significant without knowing why." - Len Lye
