Oh my god. I just listened to some of this and I was blown away. Seriously, some of the best stuff I have heard in a long time. I love her voice so much. Thank you for bringing it up....really great stuff.

Quote from: Pedro the Wombat:shock: That's such a fucking good cd.  she has a voice unlike any ive heard.  seeing her live gave me chills.
Quote from: godardianWhat kind of sound is it? Lucinda Williams-like? I think I know of her, but can't quite place her...
Quote from: Pedro the Wombatyou could say that...i like her a lot more than lucinda williams though.  it's really folk.  she had another album called "flaming red" where she plays more rock stuff, but it's not that good.  1000 kisses and her debut/demo, "living with ghosts" are her best.

Yeah, it's way better than Flaming Red, which I liked too, but only somewhat compared to this one.
I wish I could see her live.

Everytime I bring up Patty Griffin, someone brings up Lucinda Williams.  They're a little similar, except for this: I HATE LUCINDA WILLIAMS!!!  She's aweful... she sings like she's drunk.  That and I HAVE seen her live and she's a total psycho.  She was at South By Southwest and she was one of the openers for Willie.  She was so fucking drunk and just kept cursing and yelling about stuff... there were a lot of other artists there (Including Michael Penn) who took thier fourty minutes and gracefully left the stage for the next artist.  She was taking much longer and they asked if she would wrap it up after one more song, so she does this god-aweful pointless ultra-extended version of (whatever song it was, I don't remember, it was just noise by the end) about twenty minutes into just her whining and playing bad guitar, they give her the "You're pushing it" signal and she stops and goes off on a drunken rant about the show's coordinators and how she shouldn't have to get off the fucking stage because we were all here to see her anyway.  YEAH, LIKE WE'RE NOT HERE TO SEE WILLIE FUCKING NELSON!

Anyway, sorry about that... Godardian, you should listen to Patty Griffin, she's really great.  1000 Kisses especially.  It's not a perfect album (a few too many obligatory country-girl-isms), but certainly one of the better to come out in the past few years.

Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.
