Very much wishful thinking on my part but could the "longer project" mentioned by PTA be Mason & Dixon?

nomorecoffee

I dont see him tackling again pynchon. Feels like it was a once in a lifetime tribute.
Maybe that several hundred pages long script that he said he was working on in an interview?
Anybody has any idea about what this longer project could be about?

Suh-weet.  I (audio) recorded it myself...but this should be much better...

Audio-wise it's not too different.

No, because he wouldn't say that he's having difficulty "writing it" since it's just an adaptation.

Wasnt there some rumor about a 1600s ghost story or something a while back?
Of the potential projects I've heard of, I'd be happy with that ghost story (any horror, really), Mason & Dixon, or that 40s Jazz flick with Haddish.
I'd also very much enjoy being surprised with something he's never talked about.

Alethia

I really hope he makes a straight-up horror flick at some point.

That doesnt really rule Mason & Dixon out. If its a tough book to adapt then he could be having trouble "writing it".

Yes, it rules it out. Adapting a novel isn't difficult in comparison to writing an original story. He adapted Inherent Vice by copying it out into Microsoft Word and then cutting it down. Pretty simple.

He also mentioned writing something about two warring families at some point. And has mentioned doing something about the blacklist. I second that he should do a ghost story - Johnny Greenwood mentioned that in one of his interviews at some point recently so it could be on the cards.

Well, perhaps he could be taking a different approach? Also, Mason & Dixon is waaaaaaaaaay more complex, not to mention about three times as long, as Vice.

That said, it's doubtful, cool as it would be.

The most he said about the "long project" was during the Bill Simmons interview during the PT press tour.

From what I recall PTA said he had a ton of material (400 pages, most likely hyperbole), he was interested in wide open spaces and I thiiiiiiiiink he eluded to being interested in doing something set on modern times.

ono

Any writer can tell you that having a 400-page screenplay is not hyperbole. Typically you write and write and keep writing and then you have to cut it down to something that will fit on the screen. That has been his process for the longest time.

Yeah, I know, I've read it. But, again, adapting it and then stopping to write a completely different movie because the "adaptation process" is too hard doesn't make sense for a writer of his caliber.

The level of difficulty it takes for someone to write a great novel compared to the level of difficulty it takes a screenwriter to adapt it isn't in the same ballpark. This isn't a sleight at Paul. This is a fact.
