I haven't seen it yet obviously, but I already can't help but wonder what it would've been like if Tichenor was editing it. The "there's no story" comments always come up when he's not around. Eternals seemed like a waste of his time, paycheck aside.

To be fair PTA doesnt do heavy stories but character pieces most of the time.  I mean Tichenor is great but you need to be more open to other editors i think.

True, he does always seem to have a big impact on the story. Some of my favorite moments in all of PTA (the montage and shots of HW/Mary interacting before the cut forward in time at the end of TWBB, for example) are apparently in big part due to him.

However, I also tend to find the ones where he's not around the most intriguing, in a way—or at least they do something that is strange and weird and unlike anything else being made right now. Punch Drunk Love and The Master specifically. So I'm interested to see what the editing/pacing of this one is like—even if it doesn't do something completely original I still think it'll be fascinating to me.

I've heard PTA say in past interviews that he always collaborates with Tichenor/asks him for script advice even when he's not the editor. So I'm sure his impact is always somewhere to be found.

HACKANUT

Tichenor seems to add so much to the process of getting these PTA flicks out the door. I do hope they work together again. Maybe on the next one since Tichenor can float on that marvel paycheck for a bit:)
Still, the flavor Leslie Jones brings to the films she's edited pleases me a great deal. People mentioning LP as a hang out movie is the best news I could have heard.

I get what you're both saying. I think that Tichenor probably pushes him more than any of his collaborators and is probably one of the few (only?) people who can tell him "no".

I believe this should go directly to VOD, looks like a TV-production.

Ageed.

Can't believe I've spent the last few years hoping this would get an Oscar nom.  Probably won't even watch it now.

Drenk

Tichenor is great and saved Alma's character in Phantom Thread. But I'm not sure an easy going movie about young people hanging in the Valley demanded Tichenor. What LP needed was de-aging technology for Alana. So: Netflix.
Ascension.

wrongright

At least with all this praise for Alana, he's apparently making a concerted effort to write better/more dynamic female characters. So, that's good.

Nobody is saying that. I think we can agree that Hard Eight and Inherent Vice are very good movies. I liked both of them. But, they're not on the same levels as Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, The Master or even Punch Drunk Love.

Alma

I think one of the cool things about PTA's films, and I've noticed this even from the letterboxd reactions to this where people have posted rankings etc., is that everyone has a different favourite, there's no consensus. And none of them are wrong.

d

Well, those with Hard Eight as their favourite are wrong. ;)
