RED BAND Hit Girl Trailer

Holy shit, I didn't know this was supposed to be that violent.

I don't like that girl and her smarmy face, though.  She was probably the worst thing about (500) Days of Summer, and it looks like she's going to be exactly as good in this movie.

Yeah , jesus - even more surprisingly: when was the last time you heard the word "cunt" in a trailer? In fact - could it be a first?!

I forget if there's anything like this in the UK, but in the US there are "Red Band" trailers that can only play in front of R-Rated films or on the internet.  These trailers can include profanity, nudity, and/or extreme violence.  These kinds of trailers are pretty rare, though, as they're sort of a niche marketing tool.  Most trailers, even for R-Rated films, have trailers that can play in front of any movie.  For a trailer to qualify to play before general audiences (the regular "Green Band" trailers), the material has to be considered appropriate for all ages.

As far as "Red Band" trailers go, I don't think this is the first to use "cunt."  I think she also said, "I'm just fucking with you."

Yeah, I know about Red Band trailers (we have a similar system whereby a trailer can be rated anything up to an 18 and will play only in front of films with the same-or-higher rating). As far as I understand it though, they've only really started gaining popularity relatively recently (I think the Apatow movies have been important to this), isn't that about right? Given that, I really wonder whether "cunt" would have made it into one, since it's a pretty rare word to find even in movies themselves...

Well now that I think of it, it seems to be becoming more common for Americans to say "cunt."  It seems much more common in the UK.  So the word isn't in a lot of American films that I can think of, but I'm hearing more and more young Americans say it, so it'll probably start being used more in movies.

I don't know how popular the "Red Band" trailers are or whether they're gaining popularity, because they're still very rare, and generally unnecessary.  The best ones use it to build hype around something that you can't show in a regular trailer, a good example being when the American Pie trailer showed the guy fucking the pie with his pants off.

Even with the Apatow films, the majority of audiences will see a "Green Band" trailer, and a small handful of people will see a "Red Band" trailer if it makes sense to show it to the audience before a particular movie.  When I go to an R-Rated movie, where they could show a "Red Band" trailer, I still see "Green Band" trailers 99% of the time.

Just to develop this line of research, I asked a friend who cuts trailers for a living if he could think of any c-bombs in past trailers and he pointed me to the red band for Crank 2:

It's there alright, and actually - as per your theory - it's a Brit saying it!

of course it's british thing. we have it too, cunt is like a term of affection which only prudes and employers might find offensive.

i had to watch the Hit Girl trailer again to see if she had a british accent while she says it, her character doesn't but she kinda sounds english when she drops the c-bomb., probably it was voice over by someone older, look at her mouf, it kinda moves differently at that point.

either way i welcome the introduction of cunt into everyday usage in america. they shoulda called this film Cunt-Ass.

louis ck and curb use cunt as beautifully as any british comedian ever did.
