Zellweger spots 'Eye' for Par, C/W
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Renee Zellweger is attached to star in the psychological horror film "The Eye" for Paramount Pictures, with Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner producing through their C/W Prods. banner.

A remake of 2002's Hong Kong thriller "Jian gui," "The Eye" centers on a woman (Zellweger) who sees more than she bargained for when she regains her vision after a cornea transplant.

Hideo Nakata, who helmed the Japanese horror hit "Ringu," which spawned a sequel and the English-language versions "The Ring" and "The Ring Two," will direct from a screenplay by Sebastian Gutierrez and Hillary Seitz. Nakata also directed "Ringu 2" and "The Ring Two."

Vertigo Entertainment's Peter Chan, Doug Davison and Roy Lee will executive produce.

The studio is targeting an early 2006 start date, with Paramount's Brad Weston and Marc Evans overseeing for the studio.

Okay.  Most things I'll take in stride, but this pisses me off.  "The Eye" is one of the best thrillers from any country in the past decade.  It's smart, creepier than hell, well-written, well-acted, and has the most effective climax of any movie I've seen in a long time.  Lee Sin-je's performance was perfect; both endearing and emotionally complex.  Plus, she's among the world's more attractive people.

Renee Zellweger will fuck this up.  Nothing against the woman, she's fine in moderation, but she is not capable of delivering a main character (outside of a romantic comedy) with the level of depth that this film needs in order to not be cliched.  I understand the studio's need for a name actress, but god, just off the top of my head: Mia Kirshner, Scarlett Johannsen, Natalie Portman, Selma Blair, Rachel McAdams, Amy Adams... any of these actresses would have been better suited for the role.

And of course, if Renee doesn't fuck it up, Hideo Nakata will.  I am not happy.  I love this movie way too much to see its mutilated body dragged out into the street and beaten with Renee Zellweger.   :yabbse-angry:

I'll reinstate that belief. Outside of Down with Love, anything Renee Zelwegger touches has come off as pure stench to me. She wasn't in Million Dollar Baby, but she should have been. That film ressurected the useless housewife melodrama genre of the 40s. Renee Zelwegger interprets modern realistic acting with cheesy, out-dated over acting that she's better suited playing farce for the Coen brothers.

Oh, I remember not minding her in Jerry Maguire as well.

Par assigns horror 'Case' to Zellweger
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Renee Zellweger has signed to topline the horror thriller "Case 39" for Paramount Pictures. The actress recently dropped out of another Paramount horror film, C/W Prods.' "The Eye," which is now in turnaround.

Penned by Ray Wright, "Case 39" centers on an idealistic social worker (Zellweger) who saves an abused 10-year-old girl from her parents only to discover that things are not as they appear. The studio is looking for a director.

Kevin Misher is producing through his Paramount-based Misher Films alongside Anonymous Content's Steve Golin. "Case 39" originally was set up at Morgan Creek Prods., with Universal Pictures distributing.

The film is scheduled to begin shooting July 31 in Vancouver.

dammit.

Alba Eyes The Eye

Jessica Alba is in talks to star in the Cruise/Wagner remake The Eye, which has been picked up by Lionsgate after going into turnaround at Paramount. French directors David Moreau and Xavier Palud are also in negotiations to direct.

The plan, according to Variety, is to shoot the film this winter. The Eye, about an ocular transplant gone horribly wrong (!), will be based on the Pang brothers' original Hong Kong shocker. Tom Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner had Paramount purchase the remake rights to the film in 2002, with Renee Zellweger meant to star, but that version of the film fell apart. And now Zellweger morphs into Alba.

The news comes just as Cruise/Wagner's expensive producing deal with Paramount is very publicly approaching its expiration date. Hollywood pundits speculate that Paramount is finished with Cruise, and that he and Wagner are beginning to eye other studios for a new development deal.

Alba Eyes The Eye

This I can live with.  Alba's not the most convincing actress in the world, but she's easy to look at, she fits the character, and she's not Renee Zellweger.  That's a .750 batting average by anyone's math.

I don't know a lick about these French director dudes, though.  So I don't know what to think about that.

Actors have 'Eye' on roles
Nivola, Alba join Cruise/Wagner production
Source: Variety

Alessandro Nivola ("Grace Is Gone") has been cast opposite Jessica Alba in the English-language remake of Hong Kong thriller "The Eye."

Parker Posey also has boarded the project, which Cruise/Wagner Prods. is producing for Lionsgate.

Another newcomer is Paramount Vantage, which has signed on as a co-financing partner.

French helmers David Moreau and Xavier Palud are set to direct.

Storyline revolves around a woman who, after a cornea transplant, begins seeing disturbing images that send her on a quest to find out what happened to the eye's original owner. Thai brothers Danny and Oxide Pang directed the original.

Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner persuaded Paramount to buy the remake rights in 2002. Lionsgate picked up the project out of turnaround from Par not long before Cruise and Wagner left the Melrose lot and set up shop at United Artists.

Producers are Cruise, Wagner and Don Granger.

In addition to "Grace Is Gone," in which Nivola plays the brother of John Cusack's character, Nivola recently wrapped "Goal II: Living the Dream," David Auburn's "The Girl in the Park" and Ridley Scott's miniseries "The Company." Past credits include "Junebug."

Posey ("Superman Returns") appears in the upcoming indie title "Broken English," a 2007 Sundance entry directed by Zoe R. Cassavetes, and Warner Bros.' comedy "Spring Breakdown."
