Premise: This movie focuses on four residents and "stars" of the Central Park Zoo in New York City who are also best friends: a lion (Stiller), a zebra (Rock), a giraffe (Schwimmer) and a pregnant hippo (Smith). When one of them goes missing, the other three break out of the zoo looking for him, and eventually all four are captured and put in boxes to ship them back to the continent their species are originally from: Africa. An accident at sea, however, strands them on the shore of Madagascar. Having had humans take care of them their entire life, the four know nothing of surviving in the wild, or that one of them, the lion, is genetically predisposed to eat his three best friends. Exploring their surroundings, the four friends soon meet the Malagasy locals (a type of lemur given to having loud "rave-like" dance parties) and their carnivorous enemies, the fousas. As the two sides try to use these four new, strange (and large) friends to their benefit, our heroes are also confronted with the reality of their predestined roles in nature...

They've taken this "animal that looks like the actor playing it" thing to the next level.  Dreamworks can't touch Pixar.  It's kinda sad watching them try.

A bit unorignial perhaps but I looks pretty funny to me.

...sorry but he will always be Ross to me...he'll never shake that off I'm afraid.

i dont think i'd even seen a trailer for this, but i saw it today.  it was okay, not as good as the shrek's (if that gives you any idea) but probably a ton better than Shark Tale (which i didnt see.....yet!)  i liked the character design, and it had a few really funny bits, most all of which belonged to anyone who was not the 4 main characters.  the penguins, monkeys, and island creatures were all really funny.  the best line >>> "Well, this sucks".
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

I saw this, and now I don't want to have children.
We often went to the cinema, the screen would light up and we would tremble, but also, increasingly often, Madeleine and I were disappointed. The images had dated, they jittered, and Marilyn Monroe had gotten terribly old. We were sad, this wasn't the film we had dreamed of, this wasn't the total film that we all carried around inside us, this film that we would have wanted to make, or, more secretly, no doubt, that we would have wanted to live.

Stiller, Rock back for 2nd 'Madagascar'

Welcome to the jungle again. DreamWorks Animation plans to produce a sequel to the computer-animated comedy Madagascar in 2008, CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said Wednesday. The animation head also announced a direct-to-video release starring Madagascar's scene-stealing penguins in 2009 and a short film starring the marine birds that will play next month before Aardman Animation's Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Madagascar, the company's most successful original movie to date having passed the $500 million mark at the worldwide boxoffice, will see the return of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith, who voiced characters Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra and Gloria the Hippo, respectively, in the original film.
