He had me until he considered Black Hawk Down one of Scott's best works.

but it is.

It could have been if Scott didn't want his characters to talk.

QuoteI couldn't make myself give the theatrical cut more than a C+. It was a beautifully-lensed, but woefully incomplete story. This new 191-minute extended cut, on the other hand, is a truly great piece of work. I'd give it an A-, maybe even a solid A.

Does that mean he thinks it's "great" great or "Gladiator" great?

He meant "Gladiator" great, which is still much better than anything Ridley Scott has done since Gladiator.

I wound up getting a promo copy of the director's cut DVD last week.  Packaging and everything was intact except for the booklet.

It's not a great movie, but it is decent.  I never saw the theatrical cut so I don't know what was new outside of one subplot Scott mentions in his intro.  But everything that was in this version felt like it belonged there and it doesn't have that "rough cut" feel that some of you mentioned.  It suffers from the same problems that almost every Ridley Scott film has: no emotional resonance.
