After a tumultuous development history, "Basic Instinct 2" is back on track with Michael Caton-Jones in negotiations to direct the sequel to the 1992 murder mystery.

The move comes within two months of the producers, C-2, settling a lawsuit with actress Sharon Stone over their failure to produce the sequel, which was due to go into production in 2000. Stone is now set to reprise her role as Catherine Tramell, the manipulative, seductive novelist at the heart of a murder investigation in the original film. MGM is set to distribute.

The sequel has had a rocky journey since the project was first announced during the boom years of Germany's Neuer Markt, from which financing was due to come. After financing evaporated, Stone engaged in a three-year lawsuit with the producers. Several other obstacles also had hampered production, including difficulty in finding a male co-star.

Caton-Jones has most recently been working on "Shooting Dogs," which is based on the true story of a Catholic priest and an English teacher caught in the Rwandan genocide. Before that, he helmed "City by the Sea," toplining Robert De Niro and Frances McDormand. His other credits include "The Jackal," "Rob Roy" and "Memphis Belle."

Morrissey has 'Instinct' for Stone sequel

British actor David Morrissey will star opposite Sharon Stone in "Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction" in which Stone will reprise her role as the seductive novelist Catherine Tramell. Morrissey will play Dr. Andrew Glass, a psychiatrist who becomes entangled in her cat and mouse game. Principal photography will begin in March in London. To be released by MGM, the sequel follows Tramell from San Francisco to London, where she again finds herself in trouble with the law. Glass, a criminal psychiatrist, is appointed by Scotland Yard to evaluate her.

Thewlis and Rampling hone their 'Instinct'

Charlotte Rampling and David Thewlis have joined the cast of "Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction" for Intermedia Films and C2 Pictures. MGM/Sony is releasing the film domestically, with C2 handling international. They join Sharon Stone and David Morrissey in the sequel that starts shooting this week at London's Pinewood Studios and on location in the U.K. Written by Leora Barish and Henry Bean, the London-set sequel finds Catherine Tramell (Stone) on the wrong side of the law. She meets a man who might finally be her match: The criminal psychologist (Morrissey) assigned to evaluate her by Scotland Yard. Rampling plays a psychiatrist friend of Morrissey's character, with Thewlis playing a police officer. Former British soccer player Stan Collymore also has a small role.

Sharon Stone had no qualms about baring all for the steamy sequel to Basic Instinct because she is fed up with ageing actresses being restricted to unsexy roles. The middle-aged star shamelessly flaunted her figure in the upcoming Basic Instinct 2 in a bid to break the mould with her provocative character Catherine Tramell. She says, "By the time the film is released, I will be 48 and I wanted to do the nudity in a way that's quite brazen. I wanted her to be very masculine, like a man in a steam room and I wanted the audience to have a moment where they realize she's naked and then realize that she's a fortysomething woman and naked. Because we're not used to seeing that in movies. We're used to seeing Sean Connery and his granddaughter, you know what I mean? Or Mel Gibson and his daughter."

and as for th esequel..i am lookign foward to it....after that raunchy internet clip...im excited..i saw the first one in theatres and i was swept ionto  awolrd of sex, drugs, violence...and mrs tripplhorn...and sharon stone's bush....the film was shot well, acted well, and had an entertaining plot...its the best of those sex thrilliers that polulated the 90's...
