For a fun side thread  how about we try to recast Paul Thomas Anderson movies. The main course here is that we can make our alternative casting calls through any age.  You can make an alternative Hard Eight based off the time of release or a version that came out in say 1982.

For The Master in 1954 if I were calling the shots I would pick Marlon Brando for Freddie Quall and Orson Welles for Lancaster Dodd. Not confident about the rest of the cast but I'll try working on it when I ponder more on this reshoot.

Alma

I love the idea of Brando and Welles in The Master.

I'll go for Punch-Drunk Love, 1950, James Stewart and Celia Johnson.

I was going to say Jimmy Stewart for PDL. With Alec Guinness as Mattress Man.
He held on. The dolphin and all the rest of its pod turned and swam out to sea, and still he held on. This is it, he thought. Then he remembered that they were air-breathers too. It was going to be all right.

Brando is a great choice, but I'd have loved to see Montgomery Cliff as Freddie with Orson as Dodd.

If Inherent Vice was made in the 1970s:
Elliot Gould as Doc.
Robert Duvall as Bigfoot
Jane Fonda as Shasta
Barbra Streisand as Sortilege

A couple of random recasts I thought of:

James Mason as Reynolds Woodcock.
Jack Nicholson as TJ Mackey(like 1970s peak Jack)
Jack Lemon as Jim Kurring
Edward G. Robinson as Sydney

Drill

I agree with Monty Clift as Freddie but Jane Fonda and Barbra Streisand as Shasta and Sortilege? I can't see that at all. Tuesday Weld as Shasta if IV is made in 1970.

Wouldn't Wilder as Barry and Hoffman as Dean Trumbull be even cooler?

Arguments could definitely be made for either side! (I think Wilder would be better at playing the comedically sinister Trumbull than Dustin Hoffman would, personally.)
