Save The Prince Charles Cinema

Ok, there's an incredible PTA season taking place at the Prince Charles Cinema right now (I watched Phantom Thread on NYE and it was glorious, I've linked info/links below) and now the amazing PCC needs your help so please help save the best cinema in London!!!

Ensure the Prince Charles Cinema can exist for years to come. We are calling on Zedwell LSQ Ltd and their parent company Criterion Capital, immediately to withdraw the demand of a break clause in our new lease and come to the table to negotiate on reasonable terms without the need for a protracted legal process. Why is this important? The iconic Prince Charles Cinema in London's West End future is under serious threat!

We are beyond disappointed that our landlords Zedwell LSQ Ltd and their ultimate parent company Criterion Capital, have demanded the inclusion of a break clause in our new lease. This could leave us homeless with only 6 months' notice should they receive planning permission to redevelop the cinema.

Losing The Prince Charles Cinema would mean losing not just an iconic cultural institution, but also an engine for the economy of the West End that brings people from all over London and the surrounding area to watch films, shop and eat and drink.  This would have repercussions way beyond the building itself.

The Prince Charles Cinema was opened in 1962 as a live theatre before becoming a cinema in the mid-sixties.  Under our stewardship, the cinema, which receives no public subsidy,  has become known for its unique range of programming spanning the history of cinema. At a time when cinemas continue to close throughout the world, we are happy to buck the trend with our thriving and fiercely independent offer.

We feel that this demand amounts to a clear attempt by Zedwell LSQ Ltd and their ultimate parent company Criterion Capital, to use their significant financial resources to disregard our legal entitlement to a new lease and bully us out of the building once the existing one ends in Sept 2025.

We can't let that happen.

'The Prince Charles has a place in my heart. It's the people, the programming, the accessibility, feeling, texture... you cannot go wrong. You also know that on any given day, you can close your eyes, press your finger to the programme, and you'll hit something great. It's like tuning into your favourite radio station.' - Paul Thomas Anderson

PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON AT THE PRINCE CHARLES CINEMA showing in 35mm & 70mm!

https://princecharlescinema.com/seasons-events/?se=183

See some films on film from one of our favourite filmmakers, and one of the best directors working today! Our PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON in 35mm and 70mm retrospective arrives in January with celluloid exclusive screenings spanning from HARD EIGHT to LICORICE PIZZA!

It's no secret that we love Paul Thomas Anderson here. And if you go by that above quote he gave Time Out in 2021, it's safe to say he loves us too. So, that's why we are gearing up to run through the director's entire filmography from his debut feature HARD EIGHT to his latest output LICORICE PIZZA in 2025!

Our relationship with the filmmaker goes as far back as 2014, when PTA's team arranged for the director to surprise audiences in person with early screenings of INHERENT VICE. Since then, we've been lucky to have the director ship us 35mm prints of his music videos for HAIM, Thom Yorke, and The Smile, as well as popping in to screen dailies of PHANTOM THREAD, and to do impromptu intros for LICORICE PIZZA.

The legendary auteur's body of breathtaking films are the kind of odysseys you want to watch again, and again, and again, and again. And again. Starting from 18th January, we will be screening his seminal classics, with films spanning nearly three decades of masterful filmmaking. To make it even more enticing, this run will be exclusively celluloid presentations – with each film showing from 35mm or 70mm!

So, join us, as we see the return of Paul Thomas Anderson's HARD EIGHT, BOOGIE NIGHTS, MAGNOLIA, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE, THERE WILL BE BLOOD, and INHERENT VICE from 35mm, and THE MASTER, PHANTOM THREAD and LICORICE PIZZA all from 70mm!

Don't miss these masterpieces of modern cinema, on the big screen, where they deserve to be seen! If you'd like to warm up your palate, we've got PTA's mesmerising 8th feature PHANTOM THREAD showing from 35mm on New Year's Eve, before it returns in 70mm in May 2025! Scroll down for tickets...
