I don't know which is more interesting:  That the New Beverly is running "Magnolia" on April EIGHT at TWO pm deliberately, or co-incidentally.

There was a fabulous screening of BOOGIE NIGHTS last night at one of the old, mind-blowingly ornate (https://ornatetheatres.com/index.php/united-artists-los-angeles/) theaters on Broadway in downtown L.A.  (The "United Artists" theater was opened by Fairbanks, Pickford, Chaplin and Griffith in the 20's I believe.

An enthusiastic, close-to-sellout crowd responded beautifully (and appropriately) to every moment. From the gasps, it sounded like there were more than a few first-timers.   A lovely DCP print (they have no film capabilities there), added to the enjoyment.

Some special guests for a Q&A afterwards included Costume Designer Mark Bridges and Producer JoAnne Sellar.  (The conversation was recorded for a local NPR station; I'll post a link next week.)

Editor Dylan Tichenor was also in the audience.  I sat next to a woman who said she repped Philip Seymour Hoffman and Don Cheadle back in the day.  Sources tell me that PTA and Maya were out of town (yesterday was Maya's birthday), and consequently wouldn't be there.

A couple of bonuses:  John C. Reilly apparently recorded a "don't be a dick; silence your gizmos" recording that they ran before the show started.  I also had an opportunity to approach both Dylan and JoAnne after the screening, introduce myself, and ask if they'd be willing to speak with me for my "Making of..." project.

I understand that Xixaxer @modage was in attendance, but we didn't connect (again).  (Short of setting myself on fire, I've done all I can.)   I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and was quite relieved to have this evening exceed my expectations.  (You'll recall last weekend's screening did not!)

What's the making of project? Are you making a docu-series on Boogie Nights?

Well, I promised you guys (and the rest of the Cinemaverse) that I'd revisit this next time it came around on The Big Screen.   Hoping that seeing it with an assembled faithful the way God intended will improve the experience--or at least diminish my intense disappointment with my only other viewing.

INHERENT VICE, New Beverly Cinema, October 16 & 17, 2019 (with THE MODEL SHOP) (http://thenewbev.com/program/october-16-inherent-vice-model-shop/).

I occasionally think of both (in a different context)--but I'm afraid I've missed the reference here...

You seeing it with Model Shop or Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice?

Ah. Sorry.  Duh.   The night of the 16th--but not staying for Model Shop.  Saw it a few weeks ago (on the small screen, however).

[edit]  This screening will have additional significance: It will complete a re-visit of all of PTA's features on the big screen since January 2018.  It's been a real blast seeing these all again (some more than once) with appreciative audiences.   Fingers-crossed that the Collective Vibe will pick me up and carry me along--at least to some extent.

watched IV for the first time in almost two years, it’s just such a special movie, no words will do my feelings for it any justice. kept on rewatching certain scenes over and over, that and The Master never stop melting my being into a simpering pile of mush.

The New Bev seems to have added 2 days (for a total of four), pairing IV with The Long Goodbye the first two nights.  (PTA's personal 35mm print--as with Punch-Drunk Love recently.)

Can we start a xixax fundraiser to fly me to LA for the day to see IV/LG? $430 should cover the round trip, I’ll take care of the rest. Thank you.

That Long Goodbye ending is my fave from Altman. “You’ll never learn, you’re a born loser.” “Yeah, I even lost my cat”. BLAM! then Hooray for Hollywood, holy shit that flays me every time.

Comedians Cinema Club - Boogie Nights
Thursday 14th November 2019 @ Aces And Eights Bar
Doors 7:30 PM - £4.00
Quote
An absolute staple of the London comedy scene, the Chortle Award nominated Comedians Cinema Club brings together the UK’s best comedians and forces them to improvise their way through movies. These movies are brash, hilarious, nothing like the originals, and a sure-fire blockbuster hit! This month the CCC are taking on everyone's favourite Diggler, Dirk, with a no doubt incredible transformation into the world of Boogie Nights!
‘What a silly idea, uproariously executed. A small cast of comedians improvise their way through a film they may only have half-remembered, or never seen at all.’ Chortle

‘One of London’s best improv comedy nights’ London Evening Standard

Tickets from £4 - £6

Man, I'm not sure how I feel about this one.   Boogie Nights, MST3K-style?  Whew.  Truth be told, were I in London next week, I'd probably end up going...
