Aesthetically it's a nice looking poster, I'm just not sure who over the age of 15 would want to see that movie?

This is the worst kind of review to write. I love everyone involved in the making of this film but I didn't love the film. Pegg & Frost are responsible for "Shaun of the Dead," which I wrote a 2,642 word essay on how much I love it. Greg Mottola previously directed "Superbad," easily one of the best comedies of the last decade (as well as episodes of "Arrested Development" and "Undeclared.") So believe me when I say that it pains me to admit that the film does not work. The film is about a couple of best friends (and nerds) from England on their first trip to America who, on a tour of America's UFO sighting spots, discover an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen).

The two begin their journey at Comic-Con and that's only one of many attempts to hit the sweet spot for geeks that also includes "The Empire Strikes Back" t-shirts, and myriad references to "E.T." and "Close Encounters of The Third Kind." The supporting cast is also filled out with comedians I love (Jason Bateman, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig) but something about the whole film just feels 'off.' The comic rhythms just aren't there and Pegg & Frost are left mainly out to dry, (I'm not sure I laughed until about 10 minutes into the film when Paul shows up).

It's a shame because this movie was clearly made for me. The action sequences are shot quite well, the effects on Paul are especially well done (completely CG characters usually really bother me), but despite good efforts from all involved it falls short. Pegg & Frost both mentioned having to go a little broad with the script in order to make the film, (special effects and road/action movie aren't cheap). So you get the feeling that from the poster to some of the juvenile humor they might have compromised their efforts a bit too much catering to some imaginary larger audience. It's not a complete disaster, and still entertains, but I had hoped for better from all involved.

Mod's right. My god, this was an awkward film. Some sequences were cringe worthy and it didn't have any of the magic that 'Hot Fuzz' and 'Superbad' had. Maybe the executives thought that if you put two of these groups together that gold would happen but oviously that did not happen. Tread carefully nefore netflixing.
