EXCLUSIVE: All Hail The 'Ice Kings' As Gondry Reveals His Trippy Next Flick
Source: MTV

If any other writer/director hit you with this plotline, you might be inclined to glance around the room for his crack pipe. With Michel Gondry, however, it somehow makes sense.

"I'm writing a story about kids who invent a water that makes you hear music when you drink it," explained the director of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and next month's trippy Jack Black flick "Be Kind Rewind". "It's going to be a scientific story, but completely unrealistic."

Revealing the film for the first time anywhere to MTV News, Gondry added that its current title is "The Return of the Ice Kings," and that he already has actors in mind for several roles. "I've been talking to some," explained the in-demand French filmmaker, whose previous films have lured the likes of Jim Carrey, Dave Chappelle, and Kate Winslet. "But I have to finish the writing first."

"Return of the Ice Kings" will mark Gondry's fifth screenwriting effort, following "Sunshine" and "Rewind," as well as "The Science of Sleep" and his upcoming flick "Tokyo!" The director, who shot to fame with groundbreaking music videos for the likes of Bjork and The White Stripes, is planning to make it his next gig after the Japan-set film.

"I'm into science - in fact, I read more about science and astronomy than about movies," he said of his mindset while writing "Ice Kings." "Science is re-questioning itself all the time, and it's still at a stage where anything is possible."

It's these kinds of possibilities that are allowing Gondry's legendary imagination to run wild, and he's planning on taking his music-loving kids to some unusual places. "At one point, they see the end of time in the movie," he revealed of a scene he's already plotting in his head. "So, we'll have to shoot it somewhere that looks like the end of time."

gondry is one cool guy.

he's also the king of great premises and this is no exception. the musical water thing reminds me of something eugene mirman did on his online show where he had a futuristic cereal that makes you see a movie when you eat it.

the headline and the other use of the word "trippy" says a lot about his perceived audience.

they don't give a shit what his movies are actually about, all they can say about them is they are "trippy". and it's not just him and his forum-sharing ilk, all genius is misunderstood. i'm not saying i'm the only one getting it, cos his last video was probably sposed to be genius and it turned out SHIT. i'm saying that his premises are more than something to watch when you're high. but that's as far as most ppl are willing to consider. eternal sunshine was a philosophical treatise on love, memory, and youth.. not just weird for the sake of weird -- that would NOT be worthy of any praise.

look at CMBB right now. why is JB the only person reviewing that with any depth? truth is most of the world doesn't care about art. the few millions who do are mostly phoneys. and the small percentage who aren't phoneys, well, they don't post enuff.

whatever, i'm just another douche bag talking out of his ass.

Michel Gondry Talks 'Ice Kids,' Um, We Think
Source: MTV

Remember that story we ran a few weeks back revealing the title of director Michel Gondry's next flick? Well, due to communication difficulties with the French filmmaker, we must now make a minor retraction.

"It's funny because I tell you the title, but then because of my accent it's all over the Net with the wrong title!" the occasionally English-challenged director laughed. "It's called 'The Return of the Ice Kids.' But if you say 'Ice Kings,' that's cool too, I guess."

Proving there are no hard feelings, the auteur shared with us a favorite scene from his original script of "Return of the Ice Kids," which centers on teens who invent a kind of water that makes people hear music while drinking it. In one sequence, a teenage character describes his most embarrassing moment: "He talks about one day when he was at an exam and he made some weird noise with his mouth that sounded like a fart, and everybody noticed — so he kept making weird noises to cover up his nerves," Gondry revealed. "But then it looked like he was covering up a fart."

"This happened to me when I went to high school," he blushed.

Elaborating on the movie's themes, Gondry explained, "The kids are talking about completely unimportant matters, but at the same time they are writing a book of peace." Along with conflict, he added that the film will feature some "completely utopian scenes."

Complex concepts, and broken English to boot? While he's one of our very favorite filmmakers, perhaps now you're beginning to understand why it's so hard to keep Michel's statements straight.

Regardless, anything that this guy says is worth listening to closely. And these tantalizing details continue to indicate that his forthcoming project will be just as fascinatingly fun as Gondry's past credits, which he told us were "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Nine" and "The Science of Sleet."

Oops, wait a minute...
