trailer here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycw1bxJp5Ws)

this is the most beautiful movie I've seen all year, and I've seen Up.  It won the Academy Award for best foreign picture.  It's about a celloist who lost his job and finds himself dressing corpses for Japanese funeral ceremonies, and in term dealing with his own past.  It begins like a gentle morbid comedy, almost slapstick, but then ends with a ton of intensity and warmth.  I've seen it twice and both times I've seen the entire theater weep.  The trailer doesn't do the film justice.  Go, and you can take anyone to this film, it's unsinkable.

The trailer is crap and the movie has such a disappointing poster:

However, my theater is running it right now and I have to second everything Pete has said.  It is a gorgeous movie and it feels like an insulting comparison, but not only does this excel at everything that Sunshine Cleaning fucked up trying, it's Japanese.

the rest were too busy dealing with sudden aids (in some cases accompanied by a sponteneous growth of a cunt), gas leaks, and an unknown number of other hexes made daily by pete.

A great companion film for Departures is Nora's Will aka Five Days Without Nora, a Jewish Mexican film which also contemplates the sanctity of life within the ritualism of grief.  It too has a tearful and life affirming denouement.

I'm not saying see Nora's Will instead.  I'm suggesting you see both.

This was good but I couldn't bring myself to entirely love it. I don't want to say it came off as schmaltzy but perhaps it did at times. But overall it was charming, warm and fairly unique. It made something so beautiful and elegant out of something so sombre/grim. It also made it out to be rather funny too.
I did quite appreciate its sense of humour as well as its ability to be so graceful and dignified.
