I thought my shitty pothead friends were the only ones who believed that. Last lighter I bought was white (clerks choice) and I have kinda been resenting it. But what kind of neanderthal puts out a burning ember with plastic? You're just contributing that to your bowl and therefore, your lungs.
It becomes habit if you smoke enough, to shuffle the bowl around/pack tighter with the end of the lighter. Stonerz will smoke dust gladly if it means you scoop up some keef, so i dunno that a lil plastic'z gonna bother anyone committed to the peace pipe.
Out of curiosity, why are you resenting the white lighter? I love when superstitions impose themselves on reality.
I'm so far gone I just use my thumb, shows how many fucks I give.

It's just such a default color that brings no personality to my pot smoking as a lime green, yellow, or pink would, but I have been leaving the house lately specifically reminding myself not to bring the white lighter when my luck feels off.. I guess the way superstitions get pummeled into your head makes you think you better heed the warning sometimes when you're feeling vulnerable even if they initially sound stupid.

Odd but somehow cool if turns out to be true. Seems really small job for PTA, right? What's there to direct in comedy special?
https://mobile.twitter.com/unfunzine/status/983896904009330693?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-956019141365960999.ampproject.net%2F1522422854768%2Fframe.html
Alright alright alright..
That's cool. Just for context: he's filming Adam Sandler's upcoming comedy special for Netflix.
I like the way PTA's visual style, in stuff like his first Haim video ("Right Now"), and certain Radiohead ones ("Present Tense," "The Numbers") is just super clean, calm, and crisp. I wonder if he'll adopt the same approach for this new project?
It's like...in that Haim video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1LLWHroWgA), one might think, at first glance, that it's kind of sedate in terms of the look and the camera movement, but those illusions quickly disperse because it just moves so thoughtfully. Everything is so wonderfully precise -- all those lateral movements and the visual layers and the numerous nicely observed or well-timed bits. Lots of energy and humanity in that video.
So, yeah, I'm curious to see this develop through a comedy special. Location constraints make him do some interesting things, and also give him an opportunity to just patiently zero in on one of his favourite things: close-ups. A certain visual modesty becomes its own radical gesture...I think that's partly what PTA's up to with some of these projects, anyway.
Directing, sure. But running camera? I wonder why? (Other than the Fun Factor.) And a film camera?? Would even HBO spend film money to shoot an Adam Sandler standup special??

Netflix is spending $8 Billion-with-a-B on original content this year. If PTA wanted film for the Sandman I doubt it was even a debate.
"A source close to the production confirms, "Steven Brill is directing and Paul Thomas Anderson filmed a portion of Adam's stand-up set in Los Angeles on April 10."

I get the sense that PTA has taken a page from Demme's book and decided to just do tons of side projects (non-feature film projects). I don't know too much about Demme's history, but it's possible he did his side projects because he had to in order to pay the bills, or maybe for fun, or both, or other reasons. Listening to PTA's interviews gives me the sense that Paul himself is so enthusiastic about film making, whether feature-length or otherwise, and also aware of his mortality, and thus just wants to enjoy and do all he can while he can, and Demme is a filmmaker that he respects and has shown him it's possible to things that way.
All this is to say that I think PTA enjoys the benefits of being free to call up a friend like Adam and to slip into a fun role like camera operator, all while keeping a fresh perspective on filming, meeting new challenges and situations, and expanding his skill set/continuing to learn.
Maybe, maybe not. Oh, and why film? PTA pretty much only shoots film. If you mean why would Netflix or whoever is putting out the money want to shell out the cash for film, I'm not sure it costs more than digital (can't really say because I don't know), and it's probably pocket change relative to their giant stacks ... so if PTA wants to shoot film, Sure, go ahead.

Still not clear what is his role in that but my wild guess would be it's more about testing different stuff as DoP the way Junun and all the recent music videos were tests of he could handle PT without "proper" DoP.
That's disappointing news. I guess he's just sort of a co-director for this one?

So Bill, Chris and Sean all seem to have lukewarm to negative feelings on the movie, yet wanted to do a rewatachable episode on the film.

QuoteForeword by the Safdie Brothers
A heavily illustrated mid-career monograph exploring the 30-year creative journey of the 8-time Academy Award–nominated writer and director
Paul Thomas Anderson has been described as a true auteur and among the foremost filmmaking talents of his generation. His films have received 25 Academy Award nominations, and he has worked closely with the finest actors of our time, including Daniel Day-Lewis, Joaquin Phoenix, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. In Paul Thomas Anderson: Masterworks, Anderson's entire oeuvre—from Boogie Nights (1997), There Will Be Blood (2007), and The Master (2012) to his music videos for Radiohead to his early short films—is examined in illustrated detail for the first time.
Anderson's influences, his style, and the recurring themes of reinvention, alienation, destiny, and ambition that course through his movies are analyzed and supplemented by firsthand interviews with Anderson's closest collaborators and illuminated by film stills, archival photos, original illustrations, and a vibrant, engaging design aesthetic.

So "the blow job" was more of a conceptual jumping-off point for Get On Your Knees, a one-woman oral-sex meditation that's part stand-up, part poetic treatise. During an extended run in New York, the critically-acclaimed show—executive produced by Mike Birbiglia and presented by Natasha Lyonne—was enjoyed by comedian John Mulaney, Oscar-winning actors Sally Field and Emma Stone, Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Tony Kushner, and pop-culture power couple Maya Rudolph and Paul Thomas Anderson.
"Growing up in high school and college, I just wanted to be Paul Thomas Anderson," said Novak, recalling her most surreal Get On Your Knees celebrity encounter. After the show, Novak was able to spend some time with Rudolph and the filmmaker. "I started dropping fanboy tidbits on him...It was the panic of, 'How am I going to communicate the depth of my fandom to this person without being an asshole?'"
Her solution involved name-dropping the filmmaker's 1993 short Cigarettes & Coffee, referencing some obscure cross-casting between Boogie Nights and the 1980s short The Dirk Diggler Story that preceded it, and mentioning deep trivia involving a script passed to Philip Baker Hall. The filmmaker reciprocated by telling Novak he appreciated her midshow callout to the San Fernando Valley, in which he grew up.
"I felt the satisfaction of feeling like I communicated that I wasn't just big fanning him in a broad sense," said Novak. "I stand by what I said."

I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here but it seems strange to me why the editor of a film magazine wouldn't understand why Nolan is so committed to a theatrical experience. The massive scope and image size is built into Nolan's art in a way that it isn't for most other films, including Boogie Nights. I mean, a good movie that's been cropped to 1.33 for television is still a good movie, but it's still not the intended way you're supposed to be seeing it.

Movies aren't cropped for TV anymore for the most part. However, I think there's a healthy space in between the two extremes. I do think the theatrical
experience is special and we should continue to put resources in it. However, the film does live on through home viewings and what PTA said about watching it on a shitty print is true. I am a big champion of the cinematic experience in theaters, but a global pandemic is not the right time to be pushing that.
Read the room Chris.
PTA and Nolan are going for notably different things when making movies. Dunkirk is a one-of-a-kind brilliant moviegoing experience if you see it in theaters. If you're at home, unless you have a dark private mini theater setup, it's simply not the same. He's after epic-scale visual experiences, and has done enough good for cinema (and brought us enough joy) that we should be supporting his theater insistence. I will be seeing TENET in theaters, and today, will happily be watching PDL on my couch.

Sorry I misunderstood what you meant before; Yes this interview is new. The one you were referencing was a Mission Impossible podcast from last year where he said that him and Paul were like "an old married couple" and they "didn't get on at all" during Inherent Vice and that he doubted if they'd work together again.
And I missed the part of your question where you said "...interview after the interview".
I am almost done with the Elswitt podcast and despite this being a podcast after his bad marriage comment regarding PTA he is incredibly complimentary towards PTA through almost half the podcast. Although he doesn't talk about Inherent Vice which seems like when they had their falling out.
Maybe they are working together on the new one and he's trying to walk back some of the previous comments.

Nice! I expected BEE would like this less on a rewatch, glad to be proven wrong.
Interesting to see what he thinks on a rewatch.
I've rewatched recently too and even though its melodrama is naked and at times frankly messy and immature I kind of love it for that now. Its just such an exciting and overwhelming film and a kind of thing that just doesn't get made today.
Its massive naked ambition without archness or irony. Its just in your face. I love it.
It's become my annual New Year's Eve watch, starting about 3 years ago. Got it dusted off for this year already.
I'm due for a rewatch, especially now that I live mere blocks from where the first frog falls (Patton Oswalt/Delmer Darion not included).
Well, several dozen mere blocks...
(Just West of the Boogie Nights/Reseda Theater marquee.)
Oh dang! Well, mere blocks from Magnolia Blvd anyhow. The Smilin' Peanut is near me at least! And a future classic Soggy Bottom scene.

You're not wrong, but I wonder if there were mitigating factors for this decision. Maybe there were no decent prints avail, maybe Brest is proud of the 4K (restoration?).
there are definitely mitigating factors, plural, but I know one big one is simply that studios aren't striking prints like they used to. a lot of theaters are only digital projectors now, so there are fewer places to send the print to. and not only that but studios themselves are rather adverse to the idea of prints, embrace the digital format. in other words, absolutely there wasn't a decent print available. I recently saw Playtime at the Aero and it was genuinely sad how bad the print was

This does check out.
La Haine is a banger of a movie, used to keep it on in the background during parties.
Not to take anything away from my dude, but if this scene, um, inspired RahadFest in Boogie in any way, then it can't help but slightly alter how impressed I am with that scene.
Woah, I didn't realize La Haine was older! I thought the influence was the other way around, but I can see a young Paul being charmed by this for sure...
It is like a franco-hiphop Mean Streets
Very cool movie. Love the bathroom serb story. BAM in Brooklyn was screening it just earlier this week.
I think Sorrentino is constantly alluding to it as well, especially the cow.
I read an interview recently with someone (was it PTA? The safdies?) who said that La Haine used to be "the shit" when they went to film school. I liked it too, but haven't watched it in a while.
Watched it last night. Especially impressed with the photography and performances. Mouth fell open at the eerie similarity of the coked-out dude scene.

Um, relax Ben.

Wow that Ben guy needs to chill out. I mean Im gagging to see the trailer but you dont have to be one of the cool kids to see it you just need to be near one of these cinemas its playing in. Its obviously getting people talking and hyped for the trailer to drop online and for the film so this is working as far as marketing goes.
I dont think Paul owes anyone anything but I would say he lo ger it is before it drops o pjne is going to drive people mad regardless.
Though I guess we arent all as big PTA fans like Ben who likes about 3 of his films apparently hahaha
Is it really worth posting someone's tweets that have pretty much zero traction? I mean he's just another schmuck on twitter trying to score brownie points with the twitter "IN" crowd. Do you know that guy in real life Wilberfan?
Yeah, I agree it's worthless to repost every single tweet that mentions PTA, especially when said tweets are antagonistic or troll. There's no value that should be paid attention to them and they're not news
Ha, that Ben guy sounds like a complete whopper. I can't think of anything more entitled than getting up on one's soapbox and complaining about the fact that you're not yet able to see... a trailer.

I say this as a Nolan fan, feels like he doesn't belong here lol
I would probably add Fincher, as well. *ducks

Nolan and Fincher really don't belong.
OK, I like Fincher too, but I was gonna say him also, but chickened out.

This might be a hot take, but neither does Tarantino.
Maybe he could stay if he, like, agreed to get coffee 'n' shit for the others.
They all belong imo there just needs to be more luminaries crowded into picture.
It does seem to embody a certain IMDb movie bro aesthetic. (Not sure how else to encapsulate that.) If we're talking luminaries, it's insane to exclude Lynch and int'l filmmakers while including Fincher. But it's probably just this person's favorite directors, and that's fine.
Remove Tarantino, Fincher, Nolan; put in Coppola, Lynch, Spielberg.

Seems long but why not. Let him bitch about LP being too long for years to come. ;)
By the way, what's the point in separating the discussion on LP here just because a new "subplot" is sparked by a Twitter post? Not complaining or anything but maybe if it is LP-related, it can be posted in the main thread and that one can be used for some misc stuff coming from Twitter not necessarily related to this one/specific movie?
Agreed. It's confusing to have LP posts in this thread.
That tweet is probably in reference to West Side Story today, too
Oh yeah could be, the original West Side Story is long. Or the Gucci film; I think they're still cutting it so "most current cut" would make sense for that one.

I've pondered where this stuff should go. I guess I took the "everything" literally. You can reshuffle, yes?
Yup, I'll merge some posts.
And yes, the title of this thread is definitely misleading. It made sense before the new movie was a real thing, but now we have a dedicated LP thread, and soon we'll have two. (We should make a full spoilers thread once people start seeing the film.)
I feel like this must have been posted here before, but worth a revisit:

Hello there ! :waving:
I was in vacation in London the last few days and take the opportunity to go check the filming location of Phantom Thread.
I also tried to reproduce one of the exterior shots of the movie with my phone. (Funny thing : It made me realize that they problably erased that building on the top corner left in post-production)
I'm sharing that with you as I figured out you would maybe appreciate !

I'll be paying particular attention to the acknowledgments! 😎
(Uh oh. Am I gonna have to cough-up $120 for the hardcover? Maybe he'll autograph it for me...)
[edit] By way of possible explanation for the hardcover price, a friend told me, "That's very common from university presses. The hardcovers are meant for libraries and very well bound."
A friend of mine really liked the cover--which didn't impress me a lot, tbh. It's a nice candid shot of Paul--but him running a video camera? Mmmm. I don't know. If they were determined to go candid, Paul-using-a-non-film camera, I think they should have licensed one of my shots for the cover.
Yeah, I'm not sure Paul would appreciate the cover being a grainy still of him squatting like he's about to take a poo.
(Not obvious I was joking? He did line-up shots in that exact stance more than once, just for the record.)
Well played. I honestly thought that was the real cover. Didn't see the original post.

Academy screening host Paul Thomas Anderson appearance last night.
Rats. Really sorry I missed this one. My viewing on the 21st with Dano will have to suffice, I guess.
First trailer for POD THOMAS ANDERSON, "A nine-part audio documentary". (From the INCREMENT VICE folks.) A companion to the THE CINEMA OF PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON: AMERICAN APOCRYPHA book coming in Apr '23.
