Quote from: MacGuffinDepp Says Comments Were Not Anti-U.S.

LOS ANGELES - Johnny Depp said he intended no "anti-American sentiment" in comparing the nation to a dumb puppy and blamed news reports for misrepresenting his opinions.

Depp, star of the summer hit movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," apologized in a statement to those "who were offended, affected or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent." Stern, the German magazine that interviewed the actor, stood by its story.

Depp was quoted as saying that "America is dumb, is something like a dumb puppy that has big teeth - that can bite and hurt you, aggressive."

In a statement Thursday, the 40-year-old actor complained that "the inaccurate and out of context misquote" was "virulently spreading in the news."

"Taken in context, what I was saying was that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation. It is a shame that the metaphor I used was taken so radically out of context and slung about irresponsibly by the news media," Depp said.

"There was no anti-American sentiment. In fact, it was just the opposite," he said. "I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it. It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful."

Stern magazine news editor Hans-Peter Junker said Friday that Depp's quotes were "not taken out of context."

"Stern regrets that Johnny Depp is being criticized for his outspoken remarks in his homeland," Junker said. "Stern stands by its account."

Depp spends much of his time in the south of France with his companion, Vanessa Paradis, and their two children. According to the Stern article, Depp said he couldn't see himself paying more than short visits to his Los Angeles residence in the present political climate.

Thanks for posting this Mac. Fucking media, taking things out of context...

Why can't these magazines just have artists talk about their art, instead of goading them into these hot topics?
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

Johnny Depp to Cameo in French Film & Oscar Hopes
Source: Reuters

Johnny Depp will make a cameo appearance in Yvan Attal's second directorial feature, Ils se Marierent et Eurent Beaucoup d'Enfants (They Married and Had Lots of Children). The movie details the story of a group of eclectic couples entangled in a web of romantic intrigue.

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Attal's wife and co-star in his directorial debut, My Wife is an Actress, will star in the movie, as will Alain Chabat, Emmanuel Seigner, Alain Cohen, Claude Berry and Anouk Aimee. Due to be shot in Paris, the production is in the early stages of development and has no budget set.

Meanwhile, Disney is making plans to mount an Oscar campaign for Depp's swashbuckling performance in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. "Absolutely we are!," a Disney executive tells Los Angeles Daily News. "He created something dynamic and original, and every single review raved about him."

Totally!!!....and from what i can remember that came out this year so far, he would be the front runner for Actor Musical/Comdey....can anyone else think of any other nominees that could also be nominated?

From the way the ad campaigns have been running, Bill Murray will probably end up in comedy for Lost In Translation.

I havent seen it yet, i will soon though, but I would have though that was a dramatic/semi-comedic role from trailers.

Thought this was funny.

No way Depp's getting an Oscar, or deserves one, for his Pirates role.  But he was still entertaning.
I'm campaigning Murray!  Murray!  Murray!  Oh, and Johanssen.

Gore set sails again with PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2

Fresh from his highest-grossing film to date, director Gore Verbinski has signed a deal that will see him helm PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2 for Walt Disney Pictures. It appears as if all the major players save for villain Geoffrey Rush are returning for the second sailing including stars Johnny Depp, Kiera Knightly, Orlando Bloom and producer Jerry "Everything I touch turns to gold" Bruckheimer.

But when will PIRATES 2 start filming? That's a good question. Right now everyone is waiting for the script to be delivered, from the same writing team that penned the first adventure (namely, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott.)

Back-to-Back Pirates of the Caribbean Sequels Coming?
Source: Variety

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the second film this year to gross $300 million in domestic box office, may earn a distinction that's even more uncommon: back-to-back sequels shot in one simultaneous production. Recent successes which have followed the same format are Warner Bros.' "Matrix" sequels and New Line's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Sources close to the film say the producers are pondering the possibility of back-to-back sequels, and talks have begun to secure the cast should Disney pursue that avenue.

Returning for at least one sequel are producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, writers Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott (who haven't completed the script), and talent Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

No start date has been set yet.

here's some caps from the movie...

what a perfect way to begin a movie. depp's influence here is cleary buster keaton.

i like the angle when we see a ship from under. notice the ship wrecks and more interestingly the hammer head sharks.

one of the final shots of the movie. this shot reminds me of a scene in "once upon a time in the west" except under different circumstances. pretty nice though don't ya think?
