Well, I think a percentage of us who are obsessive DVD collectors DO buy movies because of the extras and the coverart.

If I'm faced with a choice between 2 movies I like, the extras will be the deciding factor.  Example:  Cabin Fever vs 21 Grams...I went with Cabin Fever b/c of the load of extras.

Now, sometimes I'll find something cheaper than it should be and I'll buy it.  Example:  Found Down by Law for $15, although I have never seen it, I bought it.

Indeed an interesting question. I don't buy films that i don't like. period. I just don't have money for it. As for the extras..... everybody likes them, I would buy a 2-disc edition of a film I like instead of a single disc edition, depending on the price difference and how much I like the movie.

..........always a good question   mod-age....
a month ago i  would tell you  that its all about the extras....now i am not so sure..........the case in point would be mystic  river................while i  think the film is phucking killer and i had the choice of buying the 3disc or th ebones.............i  choose the bones...........that  was the first time that i had doen that.........nornally i would    at a bones edition.......but now its basically this:
if i like the film well enogu to shell out the money for the extras.......and/or if its only available in a SE then i will get it regardless..........as long as i like the film.........................

* but as for crackterions, if i buy one i   want it to be pimped out........since they are the pinnacle of dvds...........i want it to be tasty.......
i will never buy that se7en-samu4ai crackterion..................i  will hold out for something better..........as rar as  i  can remember the select crackertions i own are pimped out ...................

I feel that I should clarify that I LOVE Robocop.  I've wanted to buy Robocop for about a year but it was just sorta in the back of my mind.  I saw this at the store and decided to buy it.

I also don't buy movies that I don't love.  I really don't think about cover art, rareness, or extras when buying a DVD... except for maybe the Lord of the Rings Extended series.  The extra footage is great and I'd probably buy that over the theatrical cut anyway, but the hours of superb extras really just make it a must buy.  But still the main motivation for buying them would be because I love the movie.

it's obvious sum ppl here just buy whatever gets released, others buy cos it says "criterion" on the cover.

i only buy what i will watch over and over again, and other things i like slightly less if they're really cheap.

but to see ppl buy new shitty releases at full price, it's ridiculous.

I can find really good divx copies of most of the movies I wanna own, including extras and all that, so I only buy the DVDs that I want all my friends to see, or to play them on a bigger screen.

Saw this in a shabby DVD shop and bought it immediately.

I didn't watch most of the extras yet, but I tried to watch the "Behind the Scenes" thing and turned it off after five minutes of listening to Tarantino go, "so, hmmmm, the movie I saw was cool, all right? You know. But this chick, cool, cool, very cool, all right, you know, hmmm..."

So, anyway. The McDonald's cover sucks but it's great to finally have the movie in my collection.

That's pretty early, even for a shabby DVD shop.  But yeah sometimes they sell or rent out these movies early, it's neat.
