Finally back on the schedule for an August 12th release is Steven Spielberg's acclaimed telefilm Duel, which was originally announced for DVD release last year then unceremoniously postponed. Universal Studios Home Video will issue a new special edition of the killer-truck-run-amok thriller complete with a newly remastered 4:3 full screen transfer, Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks, plus the original 2.0 stereo track, three featurettes including "Steven Spielberg on Making Duel," "Steven Spielberg and the Small Screen" and "Richard Matheson: The Writing of Duel, a still gallery, production notes and the international theatrical trailer. Retail is $19.95.

'Duel' is just such an awesome film. A little dated now, sure. But I remember loving it the last time I saw it.

I try to spend a better part of my life trying to forget how I have wronged you. Why bring it up again?

According to The Digital Bits:

There's one little bit of bad news on the Universal front today... Steven Spielberg's Duel has been postponed again. There's no word yet on a new street date, but we'll let you know when one is announced.

WTF?!

Doh!  Duel Non-release Snafu
Source: The Digital Bits

In the meantime, we've uncovered a major snafu involving Universal's on-again, off-again DVD release of Steven Spielberg's Duel. The title, which had been expected to ship last month, was pulled from the slate by Universal. But at least a few of those people who pre-ordered the disc on Amazon.com actually received their copies. Now, Amazon is saying that the title is not currently available. DVD Planet is reporting an 8/12 street date, but Universal's press site has no new street date confirmation. So if you're one of the few who got your hands on the disc, hang on tight... you may have a collector's item. We'll post an update when new information becomes available.

Maybe the delay is so that Spielberg can record a rowdy drunken commentary in which he cackles: "Do you think Dennis Weaver was high when he made this film?"

A great film.  I had caught it on HBO a few months ago.  Maybe they will show it again sometime...??? Loved every minute of it.  For some reason, I think directors on a tight budget and a great story are so much better to watch then those with tons of cash to produce crap like "2 Fast 2 Furious". Uhh.

Anyway, does anybody know where this film falls in Spielberg's history?  I hear a lot of people say this was his first, if not his biggest film.  I read somewhere that he made a movie back in '64 called "Firelight".  So what is all the type with "Duel"? Was "Duel" his first time on a national state (made for TV, I believe).

Just curious.

Can't wait for the DVD.  I'd probably get it.

PS: What is the connection with "Amblin Entertainment" and the '68 short film? Thanks again.

"Duel" was a Made-For-TV-Movie. It was only shown on TV in the US, but I think it got a theatrical release overseas. His first 'official' theatrical US release is "Sugarland Express."

As for "Firelight", it was a project Spielberg shot on his own in his backyard, using friends and family as actors. I believe it never got a release, but he rented a theater for a private showing.

"Amblin" is the name of the short film. He holds that as the project that got him his break because Sid Sheinberg hired him to Universal based on that short  alone.
