It's such a shame that people dismiss the 2nd Roses album. Luckily I was not around when they were popular off their first stuff, and was not so blindly biased in ignoring how their sound improved for Second Coming.

Meh to your Morrissey.
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

Quote from: godardianThe second Stone Roses? Meh. Total anticlimax. I can't listen to it; did they try to make it leaden, or was it just a horrible accident? I'll take bits of the first one and leave the rest. As for the solo stuff, might we not just as well be listening to *shudder* Cast? :)  Poor old Britpop had a very artistically ignoble falling off after its prime, and the victims are everywhere.

FEAR is a lyrical masterpiece, my friend!

For each a road
For everyman a religion
Face everybody and rule
F*** everything and rumble
Forget everything and remember
For everything a reason

Finding eternity arouses reactions
Freeing excellence affects reality
Fallen empires are ruling
Find earth and reap

Fantastic expectations
Amazing revelations
Final execution and resurrection
Free expression as revolution
Finding everything and realizing

You got the FEAR.

(Fantastic expectations
Amazing revelations
Finding everyone and reuniting
For everything a reason)

Meh to your Morrissey.

It's not as if we didn't try or want to like that second album. That kind of disappointment only comes from the truly devoted (and actually, since I don't care all that much about them, it's not so much disappointment as surprise at how bland so much of their stuff is in proportion to their "legendary" status).

I think the main problem with that second album is that it's much too fussed-over when you consider the fact they didn't bother to come up with good songs. It's just tribute-band stuff; there's a ton of influence and way too strict mimicry with no energy or interest. They sound as bored writing/playing/singing on that album as I look when I try to listen to it.  :(

Anyway, shame on you for implying I have a blind bias when forming my opinions of these things. I'm only "biased"- as is any listener- by my own ears and what I know I love about pop music, which I'm passionately devoted to and feel I know a little something about. I don't buy the received opinion about the first or second Stone Roses albums- I formed my own opinion from actually listening to it.
""Money doesn't come into it. It never has. I do what I do because it's all that I am." - Morrissey

"Lacan stressed more and more in his work the power and organizing principle of the symbolic, understood as the networks, social, cultural, and linguistic, into which a child is born. These precede the birth of a child, which is why Lacan can say that language is there from before the actual moment of birth. It is there in the social structures which are at play in the family and, of course, in the ideals, goals, and histories of the parents. This world of language can hardly be grasped by the newborn and yet it will act on the whole of the child's existence."

Oh, I should clarify, I don't think it's you that was blindly biased, it was the critics of the time who were huge Roses champions after their first album. Then they turned on them as only useless vermin critics can.

I do however, think you're INSANE for not liking this music...  :)

Seriously though, I see no blandness whatsoever. In fact, this album is nice and big and gaudy and rock-y in the greatest possible way for me. And the songs are awesome. I dunno....

In addition to being honest about the Stone Roses, I'm also listening to some music!

But generally the problem is when people quote pictures that are on the same page, but in this case we're on the next page (which you weren't aware of anyway).. so it's all good.

The new Beta band is really good, IMO. If you're a fan, you have nothing to worry about- go buy it.

Is it "3 EP's" good, or more like "the last two albums"  good?
