It's pretty obvious that it's Josh Safdie at this point. Even the tweets.

Back to Licorice Pizza, though. Is anybody else a little skeptical of all of the praise Alana Haim is getting for having a "breakout performance" and being a potential Oscar nominee? Katharine Waterston and Vicky Krieps didn't even generate this kind of excitement. I think over enthusiastic fans might be grading her and Cooper on a curve. In the trailer, some of her line readings sounded very flat and stilted.

I guess he didn't buy Phantom Thread or PDL either, because he could easily critisize every romance PTA has ever written using the exact same words, couldn't he?

I've seen an increasing amount of reactions like this. "Great/fun individual moments that don't really coalesce and feel inconsequential". Wonder how the critics will feel.

I almost feel like with Punch-Drunk Love and Phantom Thread the opposite is true though - relationships that on the face of it seem weird but are actually pretty romantic because the people involved really suit each other.

That guy's comment kind of chimes with one of the other reviewers saying something like he was depressed by Alana's choices but he didn't think the film intended him to be. Can't find it now I think it's been deleted. Will be interested to see how it pans out.

Yes

There's still people who don't understand "why Emily Watson would fall for Adam Sandler" in PDL. If you know you know.

Add in the age gap, there'll be some hesitance from people. But it doesn't sound too salacious personally. Mileage will vary. The sadder PTA goes, the more I enjoy

I assume critics will love this, why wouldn't they?

It seems like he's critical of the actors, not the script.

I think a little of both. Some reactions said they felt the script was undercooked/underwritten/rushed into production and could've used another draft.

As far as the critics, I think they might be mixed on the episodic nature. It certainly don't think it'll be as polarizing as IV since a big part of that was the Pynchon of it all, but I'm expecting a significant step down from PT's reviews. Plenty of people believe that was his best work. I haven't seen anyone declare this his best film/work. On the contrary (and not meant in an overall negative way, this is from people who still liked it).

People expect masterpieces from him. And that one detailed review I posted that said it felt like for once he wasn't gunning for brilliance was interesting. I wonder if some of his highbrow supporters might be thrown off a bit?

That's literally the first kinda mixed reaction by someone (not a critic) who actually watched the film that i find on twitter (other media are other media) after two days of screenings, but if you say so.

And before you play the "awards player" card, saying that "a film is good but probably not a major Oscar contender" isn't a mixed reaction. The quality of a movie has nothing to do with its awards prospect (not that this is something new but just sayin').

There were numerous Letterboxd reactions like that which have seen been removed. The latest one posted basically says it. Like I said before, a lot of these are still positive overall. I've seen a lukewarm review on Instagram that I didn't post because people didn't want me focusing on the negatives. I can post it if you'd like.

I wasn't mentioning awards there, just critics. But I think people here are hoping this will win/be nominated for awards. Is it the most important thing? No, but let's not pretend that we don't care at all.

This is exactly why I can't wait for his longer, more difficult project that's up next. Hopefully after the light workout of LP, he'll be ready for lifting big weights again.

Drenk

Biting my tongue, but PTA in the Q&A basically had the idea for this relationship by imagining an older woman indulging a teenager's horniness, and despite the fact that this seems to be « Alana's movie », the feeling I get is that this is pretty much from the horny PoV, which isn't ideal to fully flesh that story.

Okay. My tongue is bleeding.
Ascension.
