I don't mind, but I believe that kind of stuff is more spoilery than plot details. « There's a great five minutes scene with that actress! Brace yourself! » creates all sort of expectations, and then I'm « oh, here is that scene » instead of letting the movie flow, whereas plot details are abstract to me. Character dies at the end? Okay.

Just dont go in with ridiculous  expectations  then you can enjoy the film more.

From what I can gather – including PTA's jokey responses to the Stiller question in that Q&A – it is quite clearly actually Stiller, no?
I'd love to think this is PTA, but think he's probably got better things to do than run a fake Twitter account. The exchange during the Q&A seemed pre-planned in order to get the name of Sam Harpoon out there.

I recall 'in the know' posters on here a few months ago adamant that Ben Stiller was not in the movie. Were they in on the joke, too?

jviness02

I am so confused. Is Stiller indeed in the film or not?

PTA answered to this question at Saturday's Q&A: "No, Ben Stiller isn't in this movie, the guy you (the audience) thought was Ben Stiller is actually the legendary and very famous director Sam Harpoon."

Axolotl

It's pynchon, not joking. Sam Harpoon. Don't know why he would do it but it is he I'm 90% sure.

Credit to Drenk for solidifying it in my mind.

Alethia

K that's what I'm going with, regardless of whatever turns out to be true.

Axolotl

There was a novel called Cow Country published in 2015 that reputable critics thought was Pynchon under a pen name. I never did because his style is very imitable if you have a certain level of erudition and it just didn't feel like him.

And I think Sam Harpoon feels like him.

'Sam Harpoon' on Twitter has a line about the fiftieth anniversary of 'Rainbow' coming up.

Gravity's Rainbow was published in 1973...

I just want to say that I hadn't read this before my Pynchon radar got triggered, and the fact that Axo had thought the same kind of confirmed for me that I'm not insane (well...). Anyway? Very funny Twitter account.  :)

Harpoon = no Oprah.  Pynchon has never appeared on Oprah.
