Couple of more mixed reactions on Letterboxd. One said it's most akin to Inherent Vice.

That three star one is mixed, but looked at their reviews and they haven't given any PTA movie more than 4 stars. And lol would Not call the other one mixed, they said they wanted to give it 5 stars but needed another viewing, and also said Inherent Vice is their favorite PTA.

It doesn't spell well for its Awards chances though, which some people here were hoping for. It'd have to win over people who aren't really fans. And Inherent Vice comparisons won't do the trick.

It's one person on letterboxd man. Who really liked the movie

Don't be negative

I'm not being negative. Just trying to give the full picture. The only rapturous responses are from big fans of PTA. Which is fine, but also a sign to me about its overall reception. A lot of people snap at me, but I think my predictions for this are more likely to pan out. We'll see.

Another lukewarm reaction added on Letterboxd.

It's fine if you're being cautious and trying to get the full picture but I just feel like people here aren't gonna want to hear or care about every three star review on letterboxd. If you're gonna constantly talk about those at least give us an indication that you actually WANT the movie to succeed.

I do want it to. I just don't think it will and have had that feeling from early on. I wasn't quite believing that "Oscar winning, return to Boogie Nights" hype. All signs for me have pointed to this as a minor entry in his oeuvre. These reactions so far have made me think that even more. Of course plenty of people are going to love it, I hope I do too, but I'm being practical.

I should know better and just ignore you but I'm curious, awards guru. If this is too "minor", then what's winning the Oscars? Since you boast about having your finger on the pulse of the awards race, what is winning? The mediocre Kenneth Brangh coming of age film, the mediocrely reviewed Will Smith Williams sisters biopic, a Jane Campion film that isn't her best?

My guess is probably Don't Look Up, which is topical, has all of Hollywood's biggest stars, and has already had rapturous responses from test screenings.

You call those films "mediocre" but they sound much more up the Academy's alley to me than this does.

LOL.

Nothing to add, just wanted to see how long this block of quotes could get.

Interesting tidbit from PTA following screening:

QuoteIn a way, I think it's his most mainstream film, and I find it interesting he mentioned after the screening this was an "easier" project for him to work on, and he was working on something longer and he started to have trouble on it, so he went back to this idea which he has had for 20 years and decided to make it with his friends at "home".

Perhaps that's the project DiCaprio was linked to. Or the Jazz film with Tiffany Haddish.

Drenk

The problem with the jazz project is that he can't write Black characters.  :yabbse-grin:

Wait a minute, wait a minute... there are people here claiming that the new PTA movie might be divisive?

Hold the front page!

Jeremy Blackman

As I read the last couple pages, I'm seeing a number of people snapping at wrongright in a way that seems quite overblown to me. Could wrongright's posts be seen as mild concern-trolling? Is this a person who worries too much? Perhaps. But it's so mild, you guys. And it seems like a genuinely-held point of view. I understand emotions are high right now, but there's no need to antagonize.

Also, since there's been some talk about this, I can guarantee with 95% certainty that LastSnowKing is not among us. Multiple factors rule out the users who were mentioned. LastSnowKing (or someone actually on par with them) would not be welcome here. If you truly believe someone is a troll, please private message me with those concerns, and I promise to take them seriously.

Otherwise, all of the "you must be LastSnowKing" talk accomplishes nothing except produce toxicity, so let's keep that out of this thread please.

Intrigued by PTA's teasing of something 'longer' in the Q&A. I wonder what that could be: a TV miniseries? An Irishman-length epic for some streaming service? Just... a long-ass movie?

It's worth emphasizing, there will be negative opinions here. So buckle in for that. The movie will work better for some people and worse for others, and I think we're more than capable of understanding subjectivity and having a passionate but friendly conversation about all of it.

It's just jarring how wrongright has a clear agenda—not that this place needs more stanning. There's enough there, but their intentions are blatant. Of course it's still nonsense trolling that should be ignored but still, nonetheless it's very derailing and transparent

I was going to make this exact plea, and, as usual, you said it more eloquently than I probably would have.  :bravo:
