Also, he's putting his touring movie up at the New Beverly for a short run just so it will be eligible for Oscar.

And still charging $20 at a theatre that normally charges $7 for double features and Q&As with directors that don't just podcast all day about how nobody likes them.
My assholeness knows no bounds.

Alexandro

no one saw this?
it was surprisingly tense and well done. very different from previous smith's efforts yet at the same time a smith film from start to finish. which is good and bad and it can be frustrating.

most of the dialogue is actually pretty great, there's a long monologue by michael parks (12-14 minutes) that's just perfect (the guy gives a truly disturbing performance and it all starts with this monologue) and for the most part the dialogue and delivery serve the story efficiently. but there are a few times, particularly in the beginning and in the final scene, where it becomes obvious that a lack of either money or imagination (or both) makes the film say things with words instead of showing them, which sucks and it's anticlimactic.

The film is mostly good and near great at moments, it has an angry energy that suits it. This is the film of someone that's pissed off and it's not trying to hide it or make it eloquent with intellectual makeup, which is refreshing. But it does fall apart at a certain point with a "twist" that becomes too much. I think Smith should keep trying different things, this is his best film since Dogma.

Tense, rocking film that I can't get out of my head. Completely agree with alexandro. So, yeah. was not what I was expecting.
The Beatles know Jesus Christ has returned to Earth and is in Los Angeles.

I really dug it. wonder if i would second viewing. I really like the randomness to it all, great exploitation.
the one last hit that spent you...

A wee bit scuffed that it isn't what I originally thought'd be since I've heard Kevin Smith babbling about it so much on his podcasts. But it's definitely his best work since Chasing Amy in my book.

So, it's a complete piece of shit?

This movie is as debatable as the comma in that sentence.

it's not the wrench, it's the plumber.

upon first viewing, I was enthralled. The second time around, though:

complete piece of shit

It escapes me how he got such a good cast to be in this. The only explanation I can think of is that there must've been a lot of visually cool stuff in the script  that would've elevated the movie to a new level, but finally had to be axed because of the budget.

It sucks that this sucks. The WBC provides such interesting fodder for a real, articulate movie. Going forward, any such film might be considered a rip-off of this deadening, silly piece of shit.

mogwai

It's not his best movie but his best since Dogma (I know I wrote Chasing Amy earlier). The thing that bugs me is that he's planning on retire after his next movie. Because this movie is a testament that he's found a new way of making movies. Not that it's original but his look on his previous movies has been a wee bit dull. But Red State can be summed up as a three part movie. The teenagers, the cult and the shootout. It's the kind of movie Rob Zombie would've direct or did only it'd be more violent.
