from my blog:

These two deserve better.  It's been great to see Downey Jr.'s career explode since Iron Man, (though I really loved his brilliant performance in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), and Galifianakis has been one of my favorite comedians since his VH1 show Late World with Zach.  The idea of teaming these two together in a film from the director of The Hangover seemed like it would be a pretty great idea.  But the trailers were worrisome and unfortunately contain pretty much the best moments in the film, which falls flat.

Downey Jr. and Galifianakis are both left out to dry here in a script that just isn't there.  You can't watch the film and not think of Planes Trains and Automobiles which eclipses this film in every way.  It's not a complete disaster, the film has a handful of laugh out loud moments but also long stretches where indie music plays to simulate emotions that are missing from the film.   If you're someone who expects very little out of a film, you might enjoy it, but I know these guys are capable of greatness and this just isn't it.
Christopher Nolan's directive was clear to everyone in the cast and crew: Use CGI only as a last resort.

That's almost a heartbreaking review. Not because I think you may be wrong or I may disagree with you, but I have a feeling you may be right (as far as opinions go).

The only thing in any of the trailers that made me laugh was RDJ spitting on the dog. And let's be honest, that's just not enough to hang an entire movie on.

Todd Phillips just isn't that good at coming up with originial ideas, every movie he's done is just a variation or update of something else. There are always moments in his films when I feel like everything is coming to a crescendo and that's great but then he caps it off with a crappy ending, leaving me wanting more. His movies are definitely funny, I just think he's immature in terms of how he deals with story development. With that said, I liked this waaaayyy better than the Hangover. All I cared about was Zach G. in that movie anyway and this showed that he really had some chops. I can't wait until he gets a crack at writing a movie, I don't want him to have to be under Phillips' wing for too much longer..

This is one of the best beat by beat remakes of the past 10 years. Zach shows that he's more than a pretty face and that he has some real remarkable acting chops. There were more angry scenes than I was expecting and not as much sweet scenes as I wanted. Mod is right. The script wasn't up to par but the experiences and the comedic entanglements were just interesting enough that I pulled through to the end. I know that sounds harsh coming from me but I don't care...
