Quote from: picolas on January 21, 2009, 10:37:40 PMps. nearly every dutch angle was totally uncalled for/a mistake, but otherwise it was visually very effective and pretty.

hahah why do you hate dutch angles so much?
it began with

nah i just think they're misused most of the time. especially here. the tension was so naturally thick. don't cheapen it with an obvious dutching.

This was amazing. Bumped The Wrestler to number three on my list right after Let The Right One In.

It was an acting clinic by all involved. I've always felt Meryl Streep was overrated and these days, got by on reputation more than anything but she's powerful in this. If she beat Kate, I wouldn't have been mad. Her performance was really my favorite. Normally in characters like hers, you end up HATING the character, but this wasn't the case with Sister Aloysius. At least not for me.

I think the person who was hurt most by everything was Donald Miller who incidentally was the one perosn Sister Aloysius was trying to help. Father Flynn was the only father figure Donald had in his life. Personally, I don't think Father Flynn did anything wrong but I could be wrong and that's what makes the film so great. Did he or didn't he? That's up to each individual.

Sister Aloysius had it out for Father Flynn since the beginning. She was old school -- she didn't like Father Flynn for being modern. Everything from the sugar in his tea to the ball point pen he used to write, she despised. She saw what she wanted to see. Was Sister Aloysius really someone who cared about these children or was she just out to get Father Flynn because of the way he did things, which she disapproved of? She made numerous remarks about how the world around her was changing, and not for the better. She wasn't a fan of the culture during the 60's while Father Flynn most likely either was, or was indifferent to it all.

As for Sister James, I can't tell if she's just really naive or really compassionate. Maybe a little of both.

I agree with everyone that Viola Davis is overrated here. Not because she wasn't good, because she most certainly was -- but because she had so little screen time, the accolades that came her way were a bit undeserved.

It should have gotten a nomination for best pic. It was better than most all the other films nominated.
Overall, I rate it a 9.1/10.
