Berlanti's not yellow: he'll do 'Green'

"Everwood" creator Greg Berlanti has signed a deal to co-write and direct a live-action adaptation of DC Comics' superhero "Green Lantern" for Warner Bros.
Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green also are writing the script, with Donald De Line on board to produce.
Green Lantern is one of DC Comics' mainstay heroes, having been created in 1940. While several incarnations of the character have existed throughout the decades, the movie will focus on the Lantern embodied by Hal Jordan, a test pilot who finds a downed alien spacecraft. A dying alien passes his ring to Jordan, introducing the man to a wider world that includes an interstellar police force known as the Green Lantern Corps and its overseers, the Guardians of the Universe, who live on the planet Oa.
Like any superhero, the Lantern has a weakness, the color yellow, and was known for reciting an oath when charging his ring.
Berlanti met with DC Comics senior vp Gregory Noveck a year ago about bringing the hero to the big screen.
"To me, this was on the last great comic book movie that hasn't been made," said Berlanti, who grew up reading comics in the 1980s. "It was a comic book with a real mythology that you would see in a lot of the space operas and the sci-fi books. The best part about it, anybody can be become one of the Green Lanterns because anyone can end up with that ring."
Berlanti brought on board Guggenheim and Green, fellow comic book fans he met when working on "Jack & Bobby," the WB Network series he co-created, and worked for months to develop a story, with Noveck helping shape it as the trio went along.
When they went in to pitch, Berlanti had a concept artist draw up 30 images of key scenes and images to help sell to the studio the movie he wanted to direct. He also pitched Warners brass a series of movies, with the first being an origin of how Jordan becomes a member of the intergalactic police force.
Greg Silverman is overseeing for Warners, with Noveck overseeing for DC.
"Lantern" joins Berlanti's busy plate, which consists of exec producing ABC shows "Dirty Sexy Money," "Brothers & Sisters" and the upcoming "Eli Stone," a midseason legal drama for ABC that he co-created with Guggenheim.
UTA-repped Guggenheim and Endeavor-repped Green are familiar to superheroes, with both having written such comics as "Flash," "Wolverine" and "Batman Confidential." Green also has written for NBC's "Heroes."
The biggest challenge in setting up "Lantern" was waiting for the technology to become available to create fantastical worlds as well as overcoming the prejudice of a ring-bearing hero.
"The danger and the fear from a lot of people is that it would be silly," said Endeavor-repped Berlanti. "In these post-'Harry Potter' and 'Lord of the Rings' days, it's not any more fantastical than that. It's taken movies like that to make it feel as if a Green Lantern film is possible."

Warner Bros. is negotiating with Martin Campbell to direct "Green Lantern," the live-action film based on the DC Comics hero.
Campbell last directed "Casino Royale" and recently wrapped the Mel Gibson starrer "Edge of Darkness," based on the 1985 BBC miniseries that Campbell helmed.
The emergence of Campbell, who also helmed two "Zorro" films and the 007 film "GoldenEye," puts "Green Lantern" at the top of DC properties being set for movie treatment by WB. While the studio is hoping director Chris Nolan will follow its 2008 smash "The Dark Knight" with another Batfilm, DC projects such as Superman and "Justice League" were expected to happen quickly, but have stalled.
Instead, the hot DC titles are "Green Lantern" and "Jonah Hex," the latter of which has Josh Brolin set to play a disfigured gunslinger in a film that begins production in April, directed by Jimmy Heyward ("Horton Hears a Who").

Donald DeLine will produce with Berlanti.
Berlanti had once been considered to direct. Instead, WB has attached him to direct "This Is Where I Leave You," the upcoming Jonathan Tropper novel which will be adapted by the author (Daily Variety, Feb. 2).

Warner Bros. is about to decide who will wear the super-powered ring in "Green Lantern," the studio's latest DC Comics tentpole movie.
Along with director Martin Campbell and producers Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti, Warners has spent the past five months searching for the actor to play Hal Jordan, the hot-shot Air Force pilot who is chosen by a dying alien to be his successor in an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lanterns.
This week, the race narrowed to Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake. The clock is ticking on the decision as the holding deal the studio had on the actors expired Monday, meaning the three are now free to accept other offers.
The studio ordered up two rounds of screen tests with Cooper, Reynolds and Timberlake. Other actors in the early mix included Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill and Jared Leto.
Apparently, De Line, Campbell and the studio each had a different favorite among the three finalists, making it difficult to come to a consensus.
Another issue impacting the casting process is the rising budget. "Lantern" is a full-blown space epic that is expected to cost between $150 million and $200 million, if not more. Warners would like to have the production costs at a reasonable level before proceeding.
The studio has scheduled the movie for a December 2010 opening.

And then there was one.
After an intense months-long search, Warner Bros. has settled on Ryan Reynolds as its choice to play "Green Lantern," the studio's live-action tentpole based on the DC Comics hero. The film is being directed by Martin Campbell and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti.
Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test.

The studio had holding options on the actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds' option would have expired end of day Friday.
One reason for the long search was De Line, Campbell and the studio each had a different favorite among the finalists, making it difficult to come to a consensus.
If the deal is completed, it would make Reynolds the only actor to have played heroes for both Marvel and DC. He recently starred in a comic book movie, Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," where he played "the merc with a mouth" Deadpool. The character is now being developed for a spin-off to which Reynolds is attached. He also played Marvel's vampire hunter Hannibal King in "Blade: Trinity."
"Lantern" is actually Reynold's second stab at a DC Comics hero. A few years ago, he was attached to play the comic company's speedster "The Flash."
Jackie Earle Haley is the Green Lantern Villain?

Ain't It Cool News is reporting an interesting rumor that Jackie Earle Haley, who played Rorschach Watchmen and stars as Freddy Krueger in the upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street, is the frontrunner to play Green Lantern villain Sinestro.
Not only that, but the site says that Superman may make a cameo appearance as well!

Blake Lively cast as female lead in 'Green Lantern'

Blake Lively has nabbed the female lead opposite Ryan Reynolds in Warner Bros.' "Green Lantern."
Lively will play Carol Ferris, who runs her father's aerospace company and hires cocky test pilot Hal Jordan (Reynolds), who later becomes the intergalactic policeman Green Lantern. In the comics, the romance became complicated when an alien race bestowed her the power of a crystal called the Star Sapphire.
The search for the Martin Campbell-directed film's leading lady was almost as intense as the one for its title star. Keri Russell and Jennifer Garner were reportedly among those in the mix for the role.
The role called for a slightly older actress but Lively, who stars in the CW's "Gossip Girl," impressed the studio and filmmakers with her audition. Warners was also impressed with her work in "The Town," its adaptation of the gritty Chuck Hogan novel directed by Ben Affleck now in post-production.
The casting process will next turn its eye to the roles of Dr. Hector Hammond, one of the key villains, and the alien known as Sinestro.
Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti are producing the big-budget sci-fi movie, which is scheduled to shoot in Louisiana in March with an eye towards a June 17, 2011 release.

Sarsgaard, who starred opposite Carey Mulligan in "An Education," recently wrapped "Knight and Day" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The actor, repped by CAA and Authentic Talent and Literary Management, is currently shooting the indie thriller "The Ledge" with Terrence Howard and Evan Rachel Wood.
I like Peter Sarsgard. This project has me indifferent.

Robbins will play Senator Hammond, the disapproving father of the movie's villain, Dr. Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), who becomes infused with psychic powers.
Ryan Reynolds stars as Green Lantern, with Blake Lively as the hero's love interest, Carol Ferris.
Filming is set to star in March in New Orleans. The studio is planning a June 17, 2011 release.
I always confuse this with Green Hornet. And so will everybody else when these fucking movies come out.
Angela Bassett signs on for "Green Lantern"
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Angela Bassett is joining the cast of "Green Lantern," the Martin Campbell-directed Warner Bros. movie that's based on the DC Comics superhero.
Bassett is playing Dr. Amanda Waller, a government agent who in comics lore became charged with overseeing the Suicide Squad, a government-run group of captured supervillains performing tasks in exchange for eventual freedom. It's unclear if that group will pop up in "Lantern."
The movie recently began filming in New Orleans with a cast led by Ryan Reynolds and including Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Tim Robbins.
Bassett recently starred in TV's "ER" and was seen on the big screen in the Notorious B.I.G. biopic, "Notorious." She is planning to make her feature directorial debut with "United States," an adaptation of Percival Everett's novel "Erasure," which concerns a black literary figure who writes a faux autobiography that becomes a sensation.

Following Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment's lukewarm unveiling of "Green Lantern," Warners has pulled the curtain up on the first images for its poster campaign.
And it's not too shabby. Not too shabby at all.
The poster comprises four elements in total that come together in words (the taglines are from the famous Lantern oath) and picture (the make up a double shot of the famous lantern logo). And in some way they reveal to us more than the Con panel did; we actually see how Mark Strong looks like as Sinestro and how messed up Peter Sarsgaard is as Hector Hammond.

I wasn't sure there could be a comic book movie that I gave a shit about less than Thor, but here we are.
It's so strange how much my feelings on this have changed.
To me, this is a complete wildcard this Summer. At first, I was laughing at how bad the movie looked and now I'm applauding it for wearing its goofiness on its sleeve. It's so colorful and the aliens look so dumb, but its flaunting all that.
I'm in.
