Title: Magnolia Talk
Post by: Hazzlehorst on April 01, 2003, 01:45:40 PM
Is PTA saying that strange things happen all the time and they don't mean anything at all, or is he saying everything happens for a reason?

He's saying that everyone deserves a chance, and that people are essentially good.

Maybe he is trying to show; that with all these people in the world, there's always some strange coincidence taking place somewhere, and we, the filmgoer, have the chance to widness these coincedences thanx to PTA. He is simply showing us these lucky/unlucky people struck by coincedence.

 ...see where i'm going.....not even sure I do?

What does anyone think happens to Jimmy? In one way, the frogs save his life (the gun getting knocked off target), but then of course there's the possible beginnings of a fire as he lands unconscious on the floor... So, does he die? Is PTA saying he deserves to  - and does - die alone, as Rose tells him, because of what he may have done (probably did do) to Claudia?

In the screenplay, he burns to death from the fire, I believe.

The man-eating frogs ravage his body until he croaks.

Yes, and there is also an interview with PTA where he says something like "this guy's gotta burn".
The zoom in shot of "but it did happen" in Claudia's apartment after the frogs confirms that daddy was a bad boy.

There is an interesting parallel of Jimmy's attempted suicide in the opening of the movie when Sydney jumps off the building to commit suicide, but is instead shot accidentally by his own mother, dying perhaps more painfully.
Jimmy is denied the quick painless death, and instead is done in by a fire started by a TV set.  Television was the source of his success.

I always thought that referred to the frogs, not to Jimmy's past - you know: as in "this is something that hapens...". That's a really interesting way of looking at it, particularly when you consider that the art piece was made by Fiona Apple, and wasn't she raped by her uncle or something...?

I thought of it the same way as you children with angels. And I think Fiona was raped by a stranger.

Jimi Hendrix, I believe.

I sorta thought paul went over the edge with the "but it did happen" thing, but when I think about it, it adds to the climax of the whole moment in time.

in the script it does have jimmy die in the burning house, but the movie just hints at it. the movies about forgiveness, and it literally asks you, "what can we forgive?". well, can you forgive jimmy? the movie leaves it up to you, lets you decide if jimmy should burn or not. i think he should, but thats me.

I supose this applies here....

I am sitting here at work..watching Magnolia (yes, I am spoiled)...and one scence always sticks out in my head cause it's just that fucking great!!  The scene I am speaking of is Phil's "This is the part in the movie where you help me out..."

Over and over, everytime I watch it, this scene constantly sticks out.  Just the movie reference within a movie alone is amazing.  Writing at it's best...cause it's very true, and Phil says it's true, and it is true.  We all reference movies on a daily basis, but to see it in inside of a movie is something you don't see too often.  What I like about Paul's movies (and this scene demonstrates it perfectly) is the way they are written and shot, often will make you forget it's a movie you are watching.  Or at least you drift away at times.  But the real life references you can make from Magnolia in particular are limitless....You can find yourself saying, "I know a guy like that...", "I have seen that happen before...", or even "I know how that character is feeling cause I have been there".  Not taking away from other movies, but a movie that can make you look at your own life in many different ways, is truely the complete cinamatic experience!

Maybe I am just on a huge Magnolia high right now, but I am too broke to go out to lunch so instead I am spending it here....

Influenza, or the flu, is generally not dangerous, but complications from the infection can be. Some people who get the flu become seriously ill and need to be hospitalized. Some people even die from illnesses related to the flu. That's why it's important for you and your child's doctor to determine whether your family needs the flu vaccine.

Well, I liked what you said very much.
That was a great scene and very original.

Going out on a limb here, but I think miss jones agreed with you.
And I think the flu thing may have simply been posted in the wrong thread.

Hang in there.
btw....A Clockwork Orange is on my top 10 list..!!

I think the main message is , you won't believe till you feel the fear, so change yourselve now (remeber the frog's plague from Moses and Ramses in Egypt).
