Title: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Post by: sphinx on January 10, 2003, 10:34:24 PM
the movie is greenlighted!  is jay roach still directing?  is anyone attached to star?  who knows!  i hope they don't butcher it, though.  it will shatter my view of the books if they do fuck it up, which they invariably will.

...last night, on BBC Radio 2, Douglas Adams' wife, Jane Belson, was being interviewed and she was asked about the film, she said that Karey Kirkpatrick (James and the Giant Peach and Chicken Run) had been working on a script with Douglas and that some producers had read it and liked it, and that the executive producers had read it and liked and it seems to have a green light.

this doesn't make sphinx very happy, especially considering adams wrote several drafts of the screenplay for his book, and roach said one would be used.   :|

I have yet to get through the first book... so bizarre, so cheesy, so British... maybe after I finish Dali's "Diary of a Genius"...

Funny this should be mentioned, I'm currently reading Dirk Gently's Hollistic Detective Agency (not as good as HHGG).

I've always wanted those books to be made into a film, just never thought it would be very filmable.

To Bad Gilliam isn't doing it.

Yes we did, broadcast by PBS as are most BBC shows.
Now you can get the DVDs.

That show kinda sucked though.

I just had a thang for Ford Prefect, I remember. But otherwise it was riding the novelty and looked a bit shoddy even for 198-whatever, I guess.

AICN received this letter from a source regarding HHGTTG:

Hello there,

Thought you might like to know or not as the case may be, that Jay Roach turned down 'Hitchhikers' on Monday. Saying that there was something else he'd rather direct.

At the time the film was close to being green lit, so the producers are now looking for someone to replace him, The difficulty is finding an established director that'll be happy to re-create Douglas Adams's vision of the story and not over power the film with his/her own outlook on it.

I live and work in London with close contacts to sections of the film industry.

No names please, just call me EdgarG

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Gets Directors
Source: Variety

Five years after Spyglass partner Roger Birnbaum and Disney first engaged Douglas Adams and his "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," Spyglass has set British commercial and video directing and producing team Hammer & Tongs to make its feature directing debut.

The team is writer-director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith, and they will work with "Chicken Run" scribe Karey Kirkpatrick, who did a polish on a script written by the author. Spyglass is budgeting the film and will soon set a start date.

Disney has first crack at thumbing a ride on the "Hitchhiker" package as domestic distributor, since the Mouse House was involved in the original purchase.

"We finally cracked the story, and hired these clever English fellows to make sure that the picture is visually inventive and funny and accessible to contemporary audiences while still connected to the book Douglas wrote almost 25 years ago," Birnbaum said.

He first bought the book when he ran Caravan. He, partner Gary Barber and Spyglass' Jonathan Glickman will produce along with Goldsmith, Jay Roach (who once developed the pic to direct) and Robby Stamp, who was Adams' partner.

Adams, who passed away nearly two years ago, will have a posthumous exec producer credit. Spyglass' Derek Evans, who originally found the book, will also be exec producer.

Adams' book revolved around Arthur Dent, who one day is whisked away by an alien doing research to write "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." Dent becomes an intergalactic traveler, which sounds cool until he learns that Earth is about to be flattened to make way for an intergalactic bypass and that aliens want his brain.

Disney & Spyglass Give Hitchhiker's Guide the Green Light
Source: Variety

Disney and Spyglass have greenlit the adaptation of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, to shoot in London next year.

Adams' tale of the intergalactic travels of Arthur Dent will be steered by director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith.

Jay Roach had to drop out as director because of his "Austin Powers" sequels and imminent plan to direct the Meet the Parents sequel.

Now that you mention it:

Nighy, Freeman & Davis Join Hitchhiker's Guide
Source: BBCi Films, Cinescape

BBCi Films reports that Love Actually star Bill Nighy and Martin Freeman (Tim from The Office) are set to topline sci-fi comedy The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy.

Nighy says he's been cast as alien planet designer Slartibartfast in the long-gestating adaptation of Douglas Adams' novel. Freeman will play Arthur Dent, the everyday Earthling thrust into an interplanetary adventure.

"I'm a big fan of the book and the people who are making it are very cool people and I think they're going to do a good job," says Nighy. "It's a really good script. It's really, really faithful [to the book]. All the jokes are there and they're big fat jokes. It's wonderful. And with all the technology we have now, it can not only be a big satisfying comedy but I figure it could be quite exciting as well."

Nighy also added that a director is not set yet, although it was last believed that Garth Jennings would be helming the film. In an interview with Fangoria, actor Warwick Davis ("Leprechaun" and "Harry Potter" films) indicated he will also star.

In related news, Cinescape has received a scoop on where some of the filming may take place:

The scooper told us that Labrador Pictures will assist the HITCHHIKER'S production shoot in Iceland "either in April or August this year" and that the location will likely be on a glacier, as in the case with the soon-to-be filming BATMAN shoot. It's expected that the exterior shoot will only take up about a week or a little more of time and only cost the production about a million dollars. When our scooper tried to find out more information they were told that the scenes in question "will concern the white and dark planet (don't remember that from the book, though I've read it more than once."

A Prototype Marvin Design for Hitchhiker's Guide
Source: Coming Soon!

Word recently reached us that Warwick Davis ("Leprechaun") would be starring in the Disney and Spyglass adaptation of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Now, a source writes in with news that the very first piece of design from the movie has hit the net and it's the prototype costume for Marvin the Paranoid Android, the role to be played by Davis. It is not the final costume, however, merely one of several prototypes developed by Jim Henson's Creature Shop last September.

The Office star Martin Freeman, Zooey Deschanel and Mos Def will top the cast of Spyglass Entertainment/Walt Disney Pictures' feature version of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

The story centers on Arthur Dent (Freeman), who is whisked off the planet by Ford Prefect (Def), an undercover alien researching "The Hitchhiker's Guide" just before Earth is destroyed to create a new hyperspace freeway.

Deschanel plays Trillian, girlfriend of Zaphod Beeblebrox, a two-headed, three-armed ex-hippie and current president of the Galaxy.

Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith will direct the film, which starts shooting April 19 in London.

Sam Rockwell Heads for the Galaxy
Source: Variety

Sam Rockwell will star in Spyglass Entertainment/Walt Disney Co.'s The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy as Zaphod, the two-headed president of the galaxy. The film is an adaptation of the cult hit novel by Douglas Adams. Shooting starts this April in London with Garth Jennings directing.

Mos Def plays Ford Prefect, an alien disguising himself as an out-of-work actor who sets out on an intergalactic journey with his best friend, mild-mannered earthling Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman). The duo hitch a ride through space with Rockwell's Zaphod, the beautiful and brilliant scientist Trillion (Zooey Deschanel) and a depressed robot while on a quest to discover the meaning of life.

Adams adapted his own novel for the screen. After Adams' death, Karey Kirkpatrick came aboard for a rewrite. "Hitchhiker's Guide" began as a radio series and launched a book series, television series and video game.

Malkovich Aboard Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

John Malkovich is joining The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Disney adaptation of the Douglas Adams novel, says The Hollywood Reporter. The film begins shooting this month in London, with Garth Jennings at the directing.

Malkovich will play a religious cult leader called Humma Kavula, created by the late author especially for the long-gestating film.

Mos Def plays Ford Prefect, an undercover alien who sets off on an intergalactic journey with his best friend and the film's protagonist, earthling Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman). The duo hitch a ride through space -- with the two-headed ex-hippie Zaphod (Sam Rockwell); his girlfriend, the beautiful scientist Trillion (Zooey Deschanel); and a robot -- to discover the meaning of life.

Adams adapted his novel for the screen. After Adams' death in 2001, Karey Kirkpatrick did a rewrite before Robert Ben Garant came on board.

I saw this tonight. Highly enjoyable, I really knew very little about Hitchhikers so Im pretty neutral in that respect.

Great opening sequence and Sam Rockwell was hilarious. The Jim Henson workshop, creature effects are brilliant.

I saw this last night, it wasnt very good....at all.  i didn't know anything about the books/radioplays/whatever, so i was just going in hoping for something funny and different.  well, it was DIFFERENT and i feel bad cause i have to give disney credit for allowing this movie to be made A. as OUT THERE as this was and B. with no real 'stars'.  because this is going to lose them a whole lot of money.  anyways, it was funny and odd as hell but really.... just not very good.  fans of the book may react differently, but as a film it just didnt do it.  i would've loved this movie when i was a little kid though, even if all the jokes went over my head.

Overall, the film is disapointing.

It's still good and entertaining, but it was a let down.
It had some great parts and some of the design was amazing, while other aspects of the design just fell flat.

One of the problems with watching it as a fan of the series is that it starts out pretty true to the book... so much that when the major plot points start to take a turn from the book's it's jolting.  The film really shouldn't be blamed for this, but it did have a negative effect.

I think that if the screenplay would have been better, this film could have really worked and I think Hammer and Tongs could make a great film... this just wasn't it.

oh, i liked the jim henson stuff (see, you dont NEED to use 3D for everything, Lucas!)  i also liked the retro 60's 70's simplistic look of the ship and such.  this movie shouldve been made 30 years ago under Terry Gilliam with a bunch of the Monty Python cast.  then it would've been great and able to capture the material i think better.  overall it was C-.

Everything he said. Although I'd probably be a little kinder than a C-, and give it a C+.

Still, I'd recommend it purely on the basis of it being far more interesting and ambitious than most mainstream movies.

I think it deserves a B-... just because you shouldn't factor in disapointment and expectations when you're grading a film.

The creatures were great and the opening sequence was great (both of them?).  I don't think that it needed a better director (Gilliam and Python would have been far too obvious and way over the top), it needed a better screenplay.

It was an A (so there!)...the sad thing is...i'm at the theater this evening and the two movies that just opened are XXX:State of the Union and this movie...i'm gonna go with Hitchhiker's Guide
i haven't read the book...but i must say i enjoyed sam rockwell's performance, was surprised by Mos Def, and just so charmingly befuddled by that fella from the Office

Zooey is too fucking cute.

I enjoyed it, for the most part.
I thought Rockwell was great, despite the 2nd head (which was distractingly annoying).
Marvin was even better.
I really wasn't liking Mos Def in the beginning, but after a while I got used to him.

Yeah, it was okay.

I've been a fan of the books for 15 years or so now.  I liked the movie a lot, mainly because I was able to get past the things they had to change for the film.  But I can't imagine anyone not familiar with the books really getting it.  And most people who are familiar would be pissed at what was different.  So I can't figure out who's really going to just worship this movie.

I definitely liked the visual aspect of it.  The Vogon fleet looked great, the Heart of Gold was great, Magrathea was great.  There really isn't anything that springs to mind that I felt was lacking visually except maybe the guide excerpts.  The animation was cool but there was some room for some great video segments done on film (but that would have been more expensive).

Sam Rockwell was damn funny as George W. Beeblebrox.  "HUMMA KAVULA!"  More than anyone else in the movie, he nailed the part.

Martin Freeman was a good Arthur Dent but I prefer Simon Jones' slightly exaggerated Dent.

I didn't entirely buy Zooey Deschanel as Trillian but she was still decent and it's hard not to be taken in by her big hypnotic eyes.  I could look at her all day long.

And Mos Def... I thought he was good for what he did with Ford.  I just don't like what he did with Ford if that makes any sense.  I think he was a good choice to play Ford and maybe they cut some of his stuff out but I think that his performance was holding back what it should have been.  He should have either been more manic or more cool but he almost always hit this weird middle ground, like he couldn't decide.  If he had been more consistent, I would have liked him more, I'm sure.

Overall, I think it was as good of an adaptation as we were likely to get since Douglas Adams wasn't around to point Hammer & Tongs in the right direction when they drifted.  My biggest complaint is that they got the humor right but not the vibe.  I can forgive all of what didn't sit right with me but I'm mostly with RegularKarate... it's not what it could or should have been.  But if they get to do Restaurant at the End of the Universe (which is a better book anyway), I have faith they'll work it out.

I read the book back in January, which helped. The dialogue was too transplanted, it felt like there were jokes that no one could get crammed into those lines. Once they get on the Heart of Gold, it gets really clunky and shaky and meanders like crazy. You don't really know what the hell the point is. But the ending was really good, I laughed a lot. The Guide is awesome, Marvin's awesome, I agree about Mos Def. I didn't like what he was doing at first, I don't know if I liked him the rest of the time. Sam Rockwell was of course the fucking shit. The Malkovich plot should have been a lot stronger. Overall, i had a lot of fun and thought it was good.

I haven't read the books, but always I have always wanted to.  Overall, I enjoyed the film very much.  It kind of reminded me of Back to the Future, when you just get caught up with what is going on and can't wait to see what happens next.

A Five Part Trilogy?

Could The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy become a "trilogy in five parts" like the books? The film, which topped last weekend's box office, is based on the late Douglas Adams's original radio series and subsequent novels, which he described first as a trilogy in four parts, and later as a trilogy in five parts. Although producer Robbie Stamp told today's (Tuesday) Financial Times that he expected that at least three Hitchhiker movies will be produced, Disney exec Robert Mitchell would only say, in an interview with BBC News, that sequels were "a possibility given the wealth of source material, although no decision had yet been made."

anyone notice the Jason Schwartzman cameo on the viewscreen on the Herat of Gold? Zaphod's watching a program about his 'kidnapping' and gets interrupted by Mos Def and company. Just before the viewscreen is turned off Schwartzman is being asked about Zaphod to which he replies "Zaphod's just some guy, you know."

Did anyone else think the plummeting sperm whale was just a beautiful moment that transcended the almost-really-cool nature of the rest of the film? I did.
