Ok, so I got cash.... or I mean plastic, wtvr.... it's money alright. Now I wanna get that Criterion Collection - been saving up some dough, and intend on purchasing some DVD's this weekend. So, what Criterions u guys all advise me (or anytone else) to get/order tomorrow, 'cause the first Criterions I got were just those usual suspects - the contemporary musts like Traffic or Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums. Since 2k3, I've put my mind to starting to collect that mindblowing Collection of more than 100 precious jewels and own all of them - (all of them? ALL of them.) at one time. I started by getting 'otto e mezzo' and 'bob le flambeur' last month, but haven't been able to see both yet - due to school and stuff...blablabla, me is just waiting for my next vacation break that started today , wooopey- so which ones should I buy next?
I was thinking about Down By Law, it blew me away when I rented it last month , bought that fine ass poster today btw. . - or buying Fear and Loathing Las Vegas , 'cause that came out last week and is just a movie I totally digged when I saw it on tape.
So boys and girls here that represent the Criterions supporters, what's a Must and what's NOT? So I won't be buying the few crappy ones they got -can't even imagine that man, I mean, Criterion IS The Best.. right?

seriously...how flippin' excited is everyone about The Criterion "by Brakhage" release? I almost bought dog star man on video by itself the other day for $25. Now how about that and 35 others for $30 (on amazon) on dvd! Shit, dawg. I get all shaky thinking about it.
does anyone have the Contempt DVD? i got to see a print a few months ago at VAnderbuilt? i think, of course some of it was scratched to heck. some of the shots are so beautiful. the story somewhat odd, but i want to see it again nonetheless.
anywho, comments/concerns?
took me a while to think of my favorites, but here they are:
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Bunuel)
High and Low (Kurosawa)
The Third Man (Reed)
Cries and Whispers (Bergman)
L'Avventura (Antonoini)
8 1/2 (Fellini)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (Dreyer)
Do The Right Thing (Lee)

I ordered Fear and Loathing Las Vegas and Down By Law 'couple of days ago.. I guess I just wanted these two badly at the time and now I am definitely dying to see the treatment of Jarmusch's fine ass piece of work... And I also bought the Sex,Lies and Videotape disc, also 'cause it was cheap, but mostly for the reason that I never even seen it and just wanted to have it in the collection - is the commentary any good?? -
(btw, watched the Usual Suspects with commentary last night. Those two boys Chris McQuarrie and Bryan Singer were pretty funny alright, of course not as good as Benicio 'from the bullzzz' himself..)
The 'sex, lies' commentary is good; it's a conversation between Soderbergh and Neil LaBute.
I pretty much love and reccomend the same Criterion Discs as everyone else. But why is everyone forgetting to mention Criterion's finest release --Armageddon?
BTW, anyone who hasn't seen any Powell films -- particularly Peeping Tom and The Red Shoes -- would do well to pick them up.

I saw "Black Narcissus" & was very unimpressed.. However "The Red Shoes" & "Peeping Tom" have been catching my eye.

Did Tommy ever report back on his decision?
That was over four years ago, so he's probably in a nursing home by now.
i have always wished there was a Xixax Criterion thread - seperate from the GT announcement one - where we all weighed in on the films/extras after they come out.
i've just finished watching through all of Army of Shadows, so it would be interesting to me to talk about that. usually when i get a Criterion i'll weigh in on the director's thread of the director involved, but it doesn't get into any discussion or anything.

i didn't mean just the extras.
honestly i did not know much about the French Resistance until i watched the extras after watching the film. i can't remember ever learning about this part specifically in school.

I hope that he decided to take that money and put it into making a movie instead.
