From DVDFile:

The Bob & David website has just announced that HBO Home Video will release Mr. Show: The Complete Third Season on August 12th. According to the site, the set will include the usual "annoying audio commentary with the full cast and writers blathering endlessly, apologizing, celebrating their own minor achievements." Additional extras include an appearance by David Cross as the "Hot College Comic" at the HBO Aspen fest, and more. Retail is $29.95.

Run Ronnie Run was definately a disappointment.

On an unrelated note did anyone catch Martin and Orloff? its the Upright Citizens Brigade movie, and its fucking hilarious. I was at the NY premiere, good times were had.

Run Ronnie Run being a disapointment was the reason they abandoned it.

I'm just not going to accept it as an actual movie (even though that's one of the best characters they have) and choose not to ever see it.

Mr. Show Season 3 this August... I'm psyched.

"Run Ronnie Run" wasn't terrible, but it definitely wasn't as good as the show. The problem is they tried to make it more about the storyline and the character of Ronnie Dobbs rather than just cramming in random bits of funniness, which is what they're good at. It was more like a SNL movie than a "Mr. Show" movie. But there's several scenes in it that are hilarious, the "gay conspiracy scene", the Three Times One Minus One music video, Jack Black's "give her a kick in the c*nt" scene.

"Martin and Orloff" was better because they didn't really have a script. They developed the scenes through improvising, like Christopher Guest does with his movies. So the movie was really just a series of skits strung together with a thin storyline, rather than trying to hinge everything on a plot that no one cares about.

Dude, no offense, but you really don't know what you're talking about. "Mr. Show" is one of the most inventive and funniest sketch comedy shows since Monty Python. If you look at 99.999 percent of what is produced as "comedy" on television today and then look at "Mr. Show", there really is no comparison. David Cross does not do an effeminate Southern voice in every Mr. Show sketch. Bob and David rarely repeated characters, I think they did two separate characters maybe twice in four seasons worth of shows. You would be hard pressed to even find an individual Mr. Show sketch that is similar to another Mr. Show sketch. The breadth and scope of what they did on that show blows away anything that's on TV now, certainly current period SNL. All Mr. Show fans I have ever encontered are pretty discriminating about their comedy, they are usually people who seek out material that is different and challenging. I would hardly call them people who "hate stuff that is really funny".  What do you consider funny? Maybe that will shed some insight into all of this.
Unless you were just trying to post something controversial to get people riled up, in which case well done.

Mr. Clause posted something similar on the old board when he was someone else who changed his name all the time.

All about the "gay souther voice"... to which myself and many others replied.  Letting him know how wrong he was... evidently he hasn't watched it since, otherwise he would note that he was indeed wrong and maybe have to admit he didn't know what he was talking about.

Hell yea that show rules. I'm one of the people that got into it with the dvd...never had hbo when they were on. I just thought david cross was so funny and I heard bob odenkirk was funny so I decided to buy it really really blindly and I just ended up loving it...it's better than snl and especially Monty Python which I think is horribly overrated...I'm too stupid to like Monty Python.

My favorite stuff is any of the stuff w/ music...I think David Cross truly has a  surprisingly great fucking singing voice...I love "the joke:the musical", "the third wheel", "fuzz:the musical", and "jeepers creepers"...they are hilarious and cool to listen to.

Anyway, can't wait for the next seasons, I kinda like not knowing what to expect but are they as good as the first two?

So, I got my copy of "It's not funny" early.  Last night.  It even came with a sticker signed by David Cross.

It's funny... it's an extended version of the act I saw him do at SXSW, but a lot tighter, really.

My only complaint is that it's more heavily political.  He's good at the political stuff, it's just material that doesn't stay as funny as long.

Overall, it's still really good and funny and he hasn't "lost it" or anything, but it's not as good as "Shut Up you Fucking Baby"

Warner has today announced Mr. Show: The Complete Fourth Season which is the late-night series that pays homage to the sketch-comedy tradition of Monty Python and Saturday Night Live, then launches into it's own eccentric orbit of social deviance and political incorrectness. This new two-disc set will be available to own from the 21st September this year, and should retail at around $34.98. Each of the episodes will be presented in 4:3 along with English Stereo tracks. Extras on the set will include ten audio commentaries with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, deleted scenes, a music only track and outtakes.

I've been watching a lot of the Mr. Show DVDs lately.  I only first saw it this year, so I'm a Johnny Come-lately for this show.  It's damn funny.  Mustmayostardayonnaise had me cracking up.  So damn absurd.

I love how the sketches blend into each other.  There's very little material that doesn't work, and whatever doesn't work doesn't last long anyways.

Post by: Ravi on December 28, 2005, 11:07:13 PM
I finished watching the DVDs (they went by too fast).  What a terrific show.  Brilliant, brilliant writing.  And they show a keen awareness of pop culture staples without merely referencing and parodying them.  Popular music, Cops, movie trailers, infomercials, commercials, political ads, self-aggrandizing award shows, even obscure stuff like John Philip Souza and 1920s music stars.  With the Beatles lookalike sketch, for example, it wasn't just a parody of the Beatles.  It was a satire on their fame in a ridiculous situation.  And because they didn't do sketches about celebrities and pop culture and politics of the day, the episodes don't date easily.

The format of having the sketches lead into one another offers an easy way out of the pressure to end a sketch on a high note and prevents them from going on too long.  Sketches are only as long as they have to be, since there's no pressure to fill time between commercial breaks.  The only recurring characters I could recall were Ronnie Dobbs and the British guy with the beard (in the same sketch).  It was those characters in a very different context and not a rehash of the same jokes.

Even though they referenced Cops, they did so much more than a parody of it, with Ronnie Dobbs becoming a celebrity, who, at the end, literally couldn't get arrested.  The only disappointing reference was the James Lipton sketch, since even SNL and Mad TV have done those, and he's such an easy target.  The dualing Gibbons Market/Fairsley ads was amazing.  They did sort of repeat that concept with the political ads later, but it was quite different, and was still damn funny.

Why was Mr. Show cancelled?

Odenkirk on Mr Show Movie
Source: Moviehole

Second City Comedy Troupe vet Bob Odenkirk talked to Premiere this month about a possible big-screen venture for "Mr Show".

"David [Cross] and I have a written a Mr Show movie", the director of the forthcoming "Let's Go to Prison" says. "That's really my kind of humour, and David and I are good friends and want to work together again. Hopefully, we'll get to make the movie in the fall".

Odenkirk, Cross returning to HBO
Hollywood Reporter
March 21, 2008

The "Mr. Show" duo of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross are returning to HBO with "David's Situation," a new comedy pilot starring Cross.

Odenkirk and Cross co-wrote the project, which will star Cross as himself. He leaves Hollywood to move into a suburban, gated community where he has two roommates, a right-wing conservative and a liberal hippie.

"We feel it's really strong and important to the health of America," Cross and Odenkirk wrote about the project on their Web site, BobAndDavid.com.

Odenkirk will direct the pilot, which is slated to film in May. Odenkirk and Stu Smiley will executive produce, with Dionne Kirschner serving as producer.

The pickup for "Situation" comes 10 years after Odenkirk and Cross' late-night sketch comedy series "Mr. Show with Bob and David" bowed out after four seasons on HBO.

Only seen episode 2 but the interrogation scene was classic Mr Show. I'm really glad this exists. I hope they can find the time to continue making these, since Netflix seem so flexible. Even one episode every 10 months or whatever, doesn't matter. Just take their time with each and send them out sporadically. Why the hell not, right?

I agree. They're all really busy now, but Netflix gives them that flexibility.

Episode 1 feels like it was written by someone else, then suddenly they're back with Episode 2. And you're right, the interrogation sketch definitely made me think "okay good, this is exactly the same show."

I also love the opening credits. Mesmerizing.

The fourth (and last) episode is a bit underwhelming. But I don't really mind, and I love the salesman sketch.

"A child in jail is a hug waiting to be set free!" ... a clear successor to "Sorrow is the key that gets your tears out of eye jail!"

The making-of doc (episode 5) is fascinating. It's bizarre to see David Cross being so sincere and subdued and serious, even. Also, half the show appears to have been written from Odenkirk's tossed-off improvisations. The man is a true genius.
