Title: Sigur Ros
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on March 18, 2003, 11:12:58 AM
I recently picked up Ágætis Byrjun, the first Sigur Ros album I've heard. My first experience with Sigur Ros was much like my first experience with Radiohead... curiosity followed by intense bliss followed by obsession. Now that I'm more attuned to the album, every time I listen to it I have to suspend my disbelief that music can be this beautiful.

Please, someone review ( ) for me and MacGuffin, feel free to redirect me to the thread that mentioned it ...

( ) is a little more raw sounding than AB, and it starts off really well, but overall I'd have to say AB is a better album (is there any song more beautiful than Staralfur?)

Definitely get it too, though

Yeah, I'd say AB is definetely better (probably my fave album with OK Computer) but it is a great album nonetheless. If you love AB, I'm sure you'd like (). By the way, if you become anymore obsesssed, they have a single with 3 "new tracks" on it and their 3 videos coming out on April 22nd. Also, try to find the Svegn G- Englar (sp?) single if you have the chance. It has 2 album tracks and 2 amazing live songs. Definetely worth it.

Dirk, you are now officially my music guru.

And I plan on checking out Godspeed You Black Emperor....

OFF TOPIC:
After the Xixax user raves about this "Mogwai" of which I have heard so much, I have begun to try to get into their music. I just can't. Everything I've heard has just been this moody guitar noise stuff.

I want to like them. I really do. But I don't.

Now, return to the previous Sigur Ros topic.

I like Mogwai, although I've only heard "Rock Action"... if you want the weightier stuff, go with Radiohead I guess, but Mogwai can be superior in the, umm, "moody guitar noise stuff" department... very fun music in my opinion.

Ah, thanks. If you have a patient ear, you'd probably like GY!BE too (their songs clock in usually at 20 mins or so). I recall you getting Mogwai's Rock Action so GY!BE would fit in nicely with that. I would recommend "Life Your Skinny Fist Like Antennas to Heaven", which is a double discer. http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004ZD69/qid=1048033645/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2_2/702-2843702-5160818
Cheers.

p.s if you end up obsessing over GY!BE, I can give you some more recommendations.

I listened to the new Godspeed you blackemperor and I didn't really like it. I know this sounds stupid, but it's a lot of noise without any obvious connection.....I know you guys are going to slaughter me :-D

I like Sigur Rós much better. I've listened to them for many years. The singer is related to me (not to boast). I think overall that AB is the best album. Mainly because its's a perfect work of art. ( ) isn't really anything new, but really fantastic though, maybe a little bit darker. It doesn't have the same integrity as AB. The first 4 tracks are amazing!! :-D

I just saw their show tonight in Dallas. Definitely the best concert I've been to in the past few years, if not ever...they know how to put on a damn fine show. I wish I had had a better seat...it was at a really small venue and I was in the very front at first, waiting for them to come on...and then I had to go the bathroom. Oh well, win some, lose some.

I really appreciated how they came out and took a bow afterwards and then clapped along with the rest of the audience...it brought them down to earth after all that beautiful noise.

new album in the works- 14th august 2003
the band has begun work on their fourth lp. likely contenders for the album are the new songs which the band has been playing at concerts lately, such as gong (that's right, that title of this song is actually the english word 'gong', not 'göng', as previously reported), mílanó and salka.

This is what your sweet virgin eyes saw

The first single from '( )' the album. This version is a regular CD and a DVD. The CD has the opening track from album '( )' plus 12 minutes of the band's first newly-recorded music since '( )' was finished last Summer. Obstensibly a remix of the A-side - although you'd be hard pushed to guess - the drifting, ambient chorus of sampled and real vocals over lush and other-worldly keyboards has recently been found closing the band's live set. Here it is split into three distinct sections. The DVD features all three of the bands videos, for the songs "( )", "Svefn-g-englar" and "Vidrar vel til loftarasa".

ok, i wasn't asking about the CD/DVD one

there was another single that was a small CD. i do'nt know what they're called, but if you look at your CD drive on your computer you'll see a smaller circle and this is where these types of CD's go.

i wondered what was on it. it was only 3 bucks.

(three inch cd single)

The first single from '( )' the album. The release is the opening, untitled track from an album of nameless songs. Extra track on this three inch single is a 12 minute track consisting of the band's first newly-recorded music since '( )' was finished last Summer. Obstensibly a remix of the A-side - although you'd be hard pushed to guess - the drifting, ambient chorus of sampled and real vocals over lush and other-worldly keyboards has recently been found closing the band's live set. Here it is split into three distinct sections.

i'm a real believer in listening to an album the whole way through (as the artist intended it) before making a judgement on it.....but it's really really hard to listen to an entire Sigur Ros album

the band has begun work on their fourth lp. likely contenders for the album are the new songs which the band has been playing at concerts lately, such as gong (that's right, that title of this song is actually the english word 'gong', not 'göng', as previously reported), mílanó and salka.

I can not seem to find the exact bootleg that Cameron Crowe used for Njosnavelin in Vanilla Sky. I've heard many different versions of the song, but none of them seem to be as good as CC's version. Somebody please post if you know where to find it or if you know how to make a copy of it yourself!

Released March 23rd? It was available on the iTunes store a month ago.

And as far as the ba ba / ti ki controversy, I think it's a toss-up.

With all respect,

but I think that ( ) is better than Agaetis Birjun.

( ) is more coherent, consistent than the first album. It's heavier, darker...maybe that's the reason some people don't like it as much as Agaetis Birjun.

But ( ) is a perfect album, from the first till the last second. I don't know more than two or three albums which are so perfect... Just push the Play-button, sit or lie (or was it lay, my English could be better, I'm sorry people :P ) down and you are totally gone for more than sixty minutes...

( ) takes some more time to get used to than Agaetis, I guess, because it's less accessible, but please, try to listen to this album at least times, and I'm sure you'll end up liking this like almost no other album.

By the way, anyone familiar with Sigur Ros' and Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson's soundtrack "Englar Alheimsins" (Angels of the Universe)?

Very dark and sombre, highly minimalistic sounds. The Islandic films is about a schizophrenic boy, so expect the music to support that dark atmosphere. Recommended.

BTW, I didn't reed all the post on the pages of this topic, so if this was said earlier by other people- I'm sorry.

Yep, it's a good soundtrack - Have you seen the film or red the book??

Nope and nope. :)

Still waiting for the film to be broadcasted somewhere in my "area" (that means, Dutch, Belgian, British or German national television). :)

Haven't read the book yet, either. I'm quite a reader though, but I have a list of just too many books yet to read. :)

I'm very interested in both the film and the book, though.

i listen to (_) more than AB.
i think the first half of (_) is perfect,
but side 2 is very redundant.
i wish the album was 1-4, 5, & 8.
6 and 7 seem to pretty much be rehashing of 5 or AB
and the use of the same lyrics or "vocal sounds" gets really old.

( ) is bleaker and more cynical, and there's nothing wrong with that... I don't think it "falls apart" in the second half, it just gets bleaker... that's the point.

I would never say it's better than AB, though.

i would say it's not as good.

there's only so many times i can hear sumone say "usayfla, usai. usaylflo due" and whatever else. i much prefer icelandic.

() doesn't suck or anything.. musically its on par with AB, but lyrically, and in replayability/longevity the latter has yet to be matched.

Ti Ki is definitely the best. The rhythm thing sounds like the beeping of a life support system.
