Title: 9 songs
Post by: Sal on September 01, 2005, 10:41:56 PM
The antarctic + sex + concerts = recipe for a bad time at the movies.   Makes me wish I was born in a different time period, maybe in the days of Henry James, when nihilism wasn't around yet.

Hmmm -  I didn't think it was great or anything, but I didn't think it was nihilistic either. My full review: http://www.road-dog-productions.com/reviews/archives/2005/06/9_songs.html

yeah pretty much.

low quality sound at the concerts and the sex scenes were not titillating. the chick was not attractive enuff to sustain "interest" after the 3rd sex scene. and that was just 10mins in. the rest of the time i kept hoping at least the sound  would improve, the concerts must've been recorded over the phone or sumthing. were there characters in this movie? there was nothing to care about.

a rare miss for winterbottom.

But how much cooler are we all for being able to say we've seen it?

If the movie has actors really having sex, then I'm surprised it hasn't stirred up as much controversy as something like "The Brown Bunny". I hadn't heard anything about it other than that Michael Winterbottom was directing it.

According to that DVD review, the British movie board was much cooler about this than the MPAA would be.

That reviewer liked the movie a lot.  I also like Winterbottom, but I must admit, I don't see this movie really going anywhere if it really shows nothing but sex and music and ice.

I miss the days when Winterbottom made movies that were good.

I was going to expound on that, but that pretty much summed it up.

Um ya...impressed but not blown away. It seemed to work, I was left wanting more...
Ok now you guys can do the sex jokes that you are dying to do because I can feel them coming...Sorry if this isn't making as much since as usual. I'm feeling a bit out of it tonight.

You just make it too easy.

Anyway, "9 Songs" was crap.

Nah, it wasn't crap. It was a rather interesting, albeit failed, experiment.

what a wonderful film!  i felt that the film did work.  it really tells the story of a relationship through sex and music.  there is an arch.  i feel that real sex does really capture what it's like to be in completely physical relationship.  understanding this is why i never seriously date hipster/scenester girls anymore.  i did feel that the filmmakers were very brave to explore this realtionship the way they did.  i also believe that this film tip-toes the very fine line between pornography and art.  and the music in it was great!  i love all the bands in this film and the preformances were very good.  in fact, this was my borders staff pick this month along with MATCH POINT and NAKED.  lucky for me, my store is located near hipster central in chicago.  so needless to say, my picks sell very well at my store!  it was a bit short, too short to be a feature but too long to be a short film.  so i call it a "cinevella".  get it?
