the way theyre hyping this as a 'motion picture event' that nothing will prepare us for makes me puke.

hahaha......
i can't believe sheridan is actually doing this.
but the story seems very original....
they better use subtitles for when 50 Cent speaks. the dude's a real life Dixon.
I really can't stand 50 Cent - I mean really can't stand him and that whole though-guy demeanor he reeks of (P.I.M.P. - argh!). And NEON already said it, but what the hell is Jim Sheridan doing on this? Maybe he wants to be Curtis Hanson. They probably fancy themselves explorers of this (movie-wise) uncharted terretory of the rap scene's dark side (as in "their stories deserve to be told" - bah! no they don't). I hope this isn't a new trend; wholly uninteresting rapper lives becoming formulaic rags-to-riches stories (8 Mile, this and the B.I.G bio).

haha werd.
I really can't see this working. What's the deal with these good filmmakers hooking up with these bad rappers? Do these good filmmakers just want some street cred or something? Whats the deal?
Academy Award Winner 50 Cent. hahaha, OMG! LOL!! LOL!!
I wonder if he will be refered to as 50 cent for the rest of his life. Isn't he like 30 something? These rappers really need to get a handle on their monikers.
I wonder if there will be beef between C-Han and J-She.

Billboard for 50 Cent Movie Criticized
Activists want Paramount Pictures to take down billboards promoting the upcoming film "Get Rich or Die Tryin," claiming the advertisements promote gun violence.
The billboards depict Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson holding a gun in his left hand and a microphone in his right. One of the advertisements is next to a preschool.
Najee Ali, who organized a rally Tuesday, accused Paramount of irresponsibility for marketing in high-crime areas a movie that he said glorifies carrying guns.
"We're calling upon Paramount Pictures to remove these billboards out of our neighborhood and from this city," Ali said.
A Paramount spokeswoman did not immediately return a message left at her office before business hours Wednesday.
"Get Rich or Die Tryin'" stars Jackson as a drug dealer who turns away from crime to pursue his true passion, rap music. It's scheduled to open Nov. 9.

freakin IDIOTS!!!!
Rapper 50 Cent says billboard flap helps his movie
Rap star 50 Cent says a controversy over billboards for his upcoming movie, which community leaders claim glorify violence, is helping promote the film "Get Rich or Die Tryin."'
Posters for the movie that had been displayed near some grade schools were taken down by Paramount Pictures on Thursday after protests erupted over the gangsta rapper shown stripped to the waist with his bullet-scarred back to the camera and arms stretched out, holding a microphone and a gun.
"I do appreciate it," the rapper told Reuters in an interview on Friday. "They are talking about it on media outlets I didn't have plans to market the movie to. They are helping me out."
The R-rated film, whose title is taken from 50 Cent's major-label debut album that sold more than 7 million copies, is due to open November 9. It stars the rap artist, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, in a biographical story about a drug dealer who abandons crime to pursue a music career.
The rapper said it was ludicrous to single out his poster considering how action movies are routinely marketed.
The posters were removed after Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich sent a letter to Paramount, complaining that they promoted gun violence.
"I understand people had picket signs protesting, saying my poster is violent because they see a gun," 50 Cent said.
But he added: "They've seen a gun in tons of film advertising. If we walk into our local Blockbuster or place where we can rent a video, we'll see every kind of gun they manufacture on the cover of these films as a marketing tool.
"Some of these people just have an overall outlook on me that's negative," said 50 Cent, who was once shot nine times.
The rap star, whose latest CD, "The Massacre," has sold 4.7 million copies in the United States since its release in March, said he understood the film distributor's decision to take down some of the billboards.
"I think Paramount made a business decision. I don't have a problem with it. At the end of the day, those kids are going to see the film. They insult the intelligence of the actual kids.
"They read the articles, they've seen the videos, they heard the music. When the film comes out, they're gonna see the film, regardless," he said.

I find this sentence to be amazing in so many ways. I like reading it over and over again. The decision to put the info about him getting shot in that part of the article was just... neato.
I am looking forward to the reviews of this movie. The Jim Sheridan aspect makes me very curious. So what if 50 Cent can't really move his face or open his mouth when he speaks? He doesn't have to--he's playing himself... very well, apparently.
Some people aren't even giving it a chance. It's as if people think that you can't make a fantastic movie about an expressionless gangsta-cum-rapper as directed by an Irish dude. I think that could make an AWESOME movie. And no one's talking about the great supporting cast.
This could be good. Maybe. We'll see.
Quote from: MacGuffin"Some of these people just have an overall outlook on me that's negative," said 50 Cent, who was once shot nine times.
absolutely fucking gorgeous. i laughed out oud for about a minute when i read and reread this sentence a few times. my room mates wanted to know what was so funny. i didn't tell them.
it makes me picture the concerned mothers picketing his billboards as the ones who shot him. ... and then that leads to totally mundane scenarios that end in him getting shot nine times. i dunno. i guess i just would have expected a little more of a provocative quote to go with that information.
edit: somebody else found it amusing too. yay. way to go, matt.
Studio Takes Down Some 50 Cent Billboards
Paramount Pictures is removing some billboards promoting the upcoming 50 Cent film "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" after community activists complained they promoted gun violence. The billboards depict the rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, holding a gun in his left hand and a microphone in his right. At least two were near schools.
A studio spokesman said Friday that Paramount was evaluating the locations of the billboards and taking some down. He declined further comment.
One of the signs was located in front of a charter school in Altadena and another sign was near a school in south Los Angeles, areas that have struggled with gang violence.
Activists in a south Los Angeles neighborhood staged a rally Tuesday to protest the signs. Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich sent a letter Wednesday to Paramount President Brad Grey calling for immediate removal of the billboards.
"The billboard conveys to students a disturbing message actively promoting gun violence, criminal behavior and gang affiliation," Antonovich wrote.
"Get Rich or Die Tryin'" stars Jackson as a drug dealer who turns away from crime to pursue his true passion music. It is scheduled to open Nov. 9.

'Get Rich' pulled after shooting
Loews pulled the Paramount Pictures film "Get Rich or Die Tryin' " from its Waterfront theater near Pittsburgh after a man was shot to death in the theater's lobby Wednesday night.
Police said Shelton Flowers, 30, of Wilkinsburg, Pa., was shot at 11:06 p.m. and died later at an area hospital.
Gerald Barger of the West Homestead Police Department said four people were involved in the shooting but that there were no suspects. Local police plan to increase patrols at the 22-screen Loews Cineplex at the Waterfront from 6 p.m.-2 a.m.
Loews president Travis Reid said the incident occurred while most of the theater's patrons were in their seats in the complex's individual theaters.
It is not clear whether the individuals involved in the shooting had just left the screening of "Get Rich," which had started at 10 p.m., but Reid ackowledged that they had come from that direction.
While Loews will not play the film at the Waterfront until the investigation is completed, the New York-based exhibitor will continue showing the movie at its other locations around the country.
"There was a lot of preparation done for this film after Paramount's research told us that it was drawing a primarily young male crowd," Reid said. "We had taken all the precautions possible to limit any possibility of violence, but I'm skeptical that the film itself incited it. I think it was more an issue where the wrong people came into contact with each other."
A Paramount spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
Other exhibitors are watching the situation but will continue to play the movie.
"We are closely monitoring the film and the reactions of patrons in our theaters, but as of today we have no incidents," Greg Dunn, president of the Regal Entertainment Group, the country's leading exhibitor, said Thursday. Regal would not comment on its booking decisions, but sources said the chain had agreed to play the film in just 96 theaters, though Paramount had requested a significantly higher number.
AMC reported that a couple of fistfights had broken out in its theaters showing "Get Rich" but did not consider that unusual. National Amusements reported no incidents across its circuit.
"We regret this tragic incident, but we have to remind our patrons that violence at theaters is extremely rare," said John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners. "We've had 1.5 billion people come to the theaters in each of the past three years, and there were only a handful of violent incidents. Though very unfortunate, this type of incident is very rare at the cinema. At this time we don't know if there is any association of this particular incident in connection with the film that was playing. We'll let the police do their investigation."

this is the most hilarious part. they didn't even know if "get rich" was the movie they saw! what if it was saw II? you don't see those viewers shooting each other. they might be locking people up in cages filled with barbed wire, but not shooting each other.

I was just thinking that. Or when "Last Temptation of Christ" was released, there were bomb threats on the theaters. As far as this shooting goes, I think it was a stupid move to pull it from that theater. I haven't seen the movie yet, but from Ebert & Roeper's review, it's suppose to be more like "Scarface" than "8 Mile". Being AGAINST violence, drugs, etc...
If anything, they're just trying to stir up controversy. More people will be interested in seeing it now after this little incident. Just to see if the movie really IS a bad influence, which I seriously doubt that it is.
I talked to Jim Sheridan way after "In America" came out and he mentioned this new project. He said it was more of a "In the Name of the Father" kind of movie than his last two films. This has been getting some bad reviews/word of mouth but I wouldn't count him out yet.

They could have been coming from Elizabethtown. That movie made me want to shoot somebody.
from IMDb
"More violence has been reported in connection with the weekend release of the 50 Cent movie Get Rich or Die Tryin'. In Manchester, CT, 16-year-old Kevin Bride was arrested after reportedly pulling a knife on a moviegoer at a theater showing the film. And in Providence, RI, a local movie chain pulled the movie following a disturbance involving more than 100 teens at a mall food court after the movie let out. (The Providence Journal reported that police arrested six persons, including a security officer hired by the theater.)"
