Title: So Far This Year, vol. 3
Post by: Ghostboy on June 28, 2005, 05:34:00 AM
Six months in yet again, for the third time since xixax's inception.

This is the first year that I haven't been able to put together a placeholder list of ten films that might justify consideration at year's end. All I've got are

1. Pan With Us (dir. David Russo)
2. Star Wars: Episode III (dir. George Lucas)
3. Me And You And Everyone We Know (dir. Miranda July)
4. 2046 (dir. Wong Kar Wai)
5. Palindromes (dir. Todd Solondz)

I suppose I could put Yes and The War Of The Worlds up there, but they probably wouldn't last until the end of the year. What a slow six months.

And yes, I know that technically Star Wars shouldn't be up there, but I have to include it for personal reasons, rather than critical.

Batman Begins. Sadly, that's all I have. Nothing else from this year is deserving, that I've seen.

Star Wars makes my list, probably for the same reasons than Ghostboy.

I can mention Batman too... but I doubt that it will be on my final list for the year... its too soon to do this for me

Palindromes and Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill are the only two new flicks I've seen this year, and they were both great.  I've been so busy and preoccupied, though.  Tonight I see Howl's Moving Castle, so that may be a third to consider (although technically it had a Japan 2004 release).

if I need to put an American film on there, then I'll go with Crash.  not very intelligent but the acting really got to me.

I've only seen nine movies so far this year, the rankings being:

01) Sin City
02) War of the Worlds
03) The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
04) Batman Begins
05) Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
06) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
07) Imaginary Heroes
08) Fantastic Four
09) Steamboy

I can only see the top four or five making it into my top ten at the end of the year. other movies this year I think might make it: Broken Flowers, Me and You and Everyone We Know, Chronicles of Narnia, King Kong, Art School Confidential.

i will probably be seeing 7-8 movies from this year within the next couple weeks, but right now the only movies i wanna put on there are:  The squid and the whale, sin city.

i've seen last days & me and you and everyone we know.  both were pretty good but i dont think i consider them list worthy.  i expect capote, broken flowers, and a history of violence to crack the list eventually.

I've avoided most of the art movies for some reason. Here's mine

1. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
2. The Aristocrats
3. Good Night, and Good Luck
4. A History of Violence
5. Batman Begins
6. War of the Worlds
7. 40-Year-Old Virgin
8.
9.
10.

Still have to see most of Cine's list. I bet Capote, Broken Flowers, Grizzly Man could get up there. I'm sure Munich will find it too.

My least favorites so far: Me and You and Everyone We Know, Crash, Lord of War, Episode III, Sin City.

I was hesitant to do this until I'd seen enough of the contenders.  So here's my 'so far' list while the majority of you prep your 'best of' lists.  This is having seen about 3/4 of what I want to see from this year, with some notables listing, that's a different list, but I will say I own and have not yet watched Yes.

Five because Ghostboy did five in the beginning.  Alphabetical because I'm fickle until time has sewn itself shut.

Grizzly Man
Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
Mysterious Skin
Save the Green Planet
Where the Truth Lies

No surprise, right.

Hyped up Sci Fi refers to Matrix and currently King Kong. The longest reviews on the board are for that film. Most people won't put it as #1 for the year, but the passion of every review makes you think they should if they can write so much. Others are arguable but I believe firmly in the board's overriding love for the first two categories.

that's it? you're original statement is incorrect and seemingly intended to patronize a good deal of people. sorry people don't share your taste. as for the comparison, if you really wanted to hurt my feelings, you should've just said that I was you at any point in your time being here. i would've found that insulting. I think walrus is honest and passionate and not a dick. and sorry if my poorly sarcastic, exaggerated hierarchy of your tastes hit some sort of nerve that made you feel you had to post a retort like this.

Anyhow, I have yet to see: Capote, The Squid and the Whale, Syriana, Walk the Line, Wallace and Gromit, Grizzly Man, Junebug, Cinderella Man, Me and You and Everyone We Know (again, needs a fair shot), The Constant Gardener, Cache, Downfall, 2046, March of the Penguins, Transamerican, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Where the Truth Lies, Save the Green Planet, Jarhead, Thumbsucker, Match Point, Manderlay, Last Days, Yes, Broken Flowers. King Kong, Munich, New World are absolutes.

me too, but even if he can half-prove why, the theory still fails..

hyped up sci-fi films of recent times:
matrix reloaded and revolutions - xixax verdict: SUCKED
star wars films - xixax verdict: SUCKED
what else was there? if u count Kong (what the fuck is sci fi about kong??? the special effects that were used?? wow that's stupid) u hav to count HULK or sumshit, which no one here liked and is a superhero movie anyway.

so really i still don't understand why hyped up sci-fi belongs so high.

I'm guessing GT was referring to the giant ape, or perhaps the dinosaurs or mutant bugs/bats.  I'd also say it is Sci Fi, if pressed.  It is best defined as a "monster movie" which would include either horror or sci fi.  Since King Kong isn't ever scary, I would put it in Sci Fi.

if pressed? what, if pressed between your temples hard enough that your brain would actually categorize a story of a giant ape as being SCIENCE FICTION? the rest of your explanation makes even less sense, like you're making it up as you go along. very simply, where's the science in king kong? i..... don't know what to say, everyone has lost their mind.

Monster Films
A type of horror or science fiction movie in which a horrible creature, often of gigantic proportions, causes havoc and mass destruction on society. Often taking place in densely populated urban areas, these stories focus their action on humanity's efforts to destroy the creature and restore natural order. Heroes who destroy the threat are often scientists and/or the military. Origins of these forces vary, from outer space (Alien), from human construction (Frankenstein), from failed scientific experiments (The Fly), from the negative impact of technology (Godzilla), or from nature (Jaws, Them!). These films usually feature spectacular special effects, and their success depends primarily on a convincing monster. Action, stunts, destruction and chaos are primary elements, with character development and narrative generally secondary considerations. This said, on occasion the form is used as an allegorical plea for tolerance or is used metaphorically, sympathetically representing monsters as outcasts (Frankenstein, King Kong). If successful, monster films will mutate and spawn sequels and/or remakes as typified by Godzilla.

that's stretching it tho, don't u think? i doubt anyone at xixax goes "oh goodie another sci-fi film to satisfy the nerd within!" i mean, barely anyone went to see Serenity.

so you're saying every superhero movie ever made is also sci-fi, since it's fantasy right? or sumthing crazy like that. great, sci-fi now encapsulates half the movies of the year. of course xixaxers love it.

I'm sorry, but what should I say to that?  I agreed, then showed my reasoning.

I'm unsure on your bible comment.  Are you equating the bible to all movie guide?  If so, I guess that would make it quite the authority (atleast in the minds of many people).  Or, were you making a joke?

yes shaftr i was making a joke. u used the all movie to guide to justify your reasoning of horror and sci-fi as the only genre a monster movie can belong to (apparently). that's fine. but to get back to the original point,  i asked you to see what the "bible" (the book u quoted from) says about SCI FI, since that's what we're talking about.

i'm still waiting to hear how the highest ranking type of movie that xixaxers automatically love is "hyped-up sci fi", when the definition of it is being stretched to its limit just to accomodate kong.  neither of you have shown that.

if fantasy is in the larger category of science fiction, then a film series like harry potter is science fiction? cause i dont believe thats true at all.

they're two different genres. there can be elements of a film that make it qualify as a sci fi film technically, but something like king kong is predominantly an action-adventure film.. but broken down its fantasy moreso than science fiction.

I would say king kong is a foreign film, since it's made in New Zealand.  or maybe an indie film too, since Lucas categorized the Star Wars franchise as indie films.
but I mean, why even argue about it here?  the argument is petty even for messageboard standards, it's like someone arguing Britney Spears shouldn't be filed under rock music in newbury comics or something.  The newbie wanted to know why Batman was on so many lists so I explained to him that xixax digs sci-fi way more than herzog.  maybe I should've said hyped up big budget special effects films in general, but to dwell on the sci fi-ness of king kong (which can probably be argued since the whole genre theory suggests that genre emcompasses both semantics and syntax, so the theme of a beast's struggle in the human world is reminscent of those robot stories or something) is kinda like Bush kept on saying "you forgot Poland" to Kerry's legitimate point.
I didn't know the hierarchy thing was gonna elicit so much negativity either, I wasn't pointing any fingers, but it is true that movies like Batman begins get way more clicks than movies like Turtles Can Fly.  That's all I'm saying.

I don't really need to.  I didn't make that original list nor do I believe in it.  I also think it is a silly hierarchy since it treats different modes of productions as genres.

yeah, i was going to amend my post to say "i mean GT as he was the only one trying to prove it".  anyway since GT's comments were the catalyst for my side of the argument in the first place, and he has since given up miserably, this whole thing can be put to rest.

i agree moreso with pete's new statement about big budget special effects movies. even tho the obvious explanation is that turtles can fly wasn't shown anywhere.

Top 10 Movies of this year
1. Sin City
2. Batman Begins
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8
9.
10.

Bottom 10 Movies of this year
1. Alone In The Dark
2. 40 Year Old Virgin
3. Crash
4. Wedding Crashers
5. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

I certainly hope the movies I've been meaning to see from this year turn out great, because of what I can recall offhand, this hasn't been a great year for movies.  I still need many more, though.

EDIT: I completely forgot about Alone in the Dark and how I couldn't stop laughing at how horrible it was.  Uwe Boll is possibly one of the worst directors of our time.

cool, bottom 10!
I haven't seen 10 bad movies this year though.

1. The Myth (the new Jackie Chan movie with some kickass fights that nevertheless broke my heart)
2. Wedding Crashers
3. Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic
4. Last Days
5. Mysterious Skin (but the ending was good)
6. Batman Begins (though it was still way better than the the other four Batmans)

there were some boring movies like Memory of a Killer and Proof, but they weren't bad.

10 movies worth a look on video if they never played at your theater:
1. Kontroll
2. The Beat That My Heart Skipped
3. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill
4. Rize
5. S.P.L.
6. Unleashed

okay I lied, there really weren't 10 underrated movies this year.  this year wasn't as good as last year, last year was the best year yet.  This year had a really solid start of really eclectic bunch of movies that boomed in March and lasted all the way to the summer, then came Oscar season and they were just a bunch of studio films trying to fit into Miramax's shoe.

There's nothing to argue about.  It depends on who or which nation did the majority of the financing.  Kong is, thus, an American film (American financed, I BELIEVE), and the recent 3 Star Wars are independent because Lucas financed it himself.  Just saying.  I know it's not really what anybody's talking about.

I know people seem to generally poo poo every year except for 1999 as "a bad year for movies," but I really felt this was.  There's still Brokeback Mountain, Munich, and The New World to see, and my guess is that The New World is the only one out of those with the potential to be a breakout important masterwork... but out of what I've seen so far, there's been few movies that I felt were all that great.  Kong and Batman were pretty good.  Junebug, Wallace and Gromit, Downfall, Me and You and Everyone We Know, and Capote were the only really memorable movie experiences for me this year.  Sure, I missed a few movies that might've made the list, but I still feel like overall, especially this end of the year has been weak.  Usually there are several movies duking it out for the critics awards coming out this time of year, and thus, a whole bunch of movies to catch.  I don't feel that this year.

Watch it again.  It did.

It has the distinction of being the only movie I saw this year which I unabashedly loved.  There were a lot of movies I liked, but none except that one gave me that exhilaration that you get from just outright enjoying a film with no reservations whatsoever.

This probably belongs in the 'Serenity' thread, but I gotta speak up-- that movie is shithouse.  I couldn't even make it halfway through before giving up.  Here's why: it's blantantly obvious that Whedon has no concept of film vs. tv.  There are soooo many scenes of characters just regurgitating the same plot synopsis over and over and over again.  'We should get this girl off the ship,' 'no, she's staying.'  Yadda yadda yadda.  There is no energy to the movie.  There is nothing 'filmic' happening.  Every time I blinked my eyes, there was another scene where the characters just voiced their opinions about the same shit for at least 2 mins.  There is no energy-- that 'chase scene' after robbing the bank, it could be the most awkwardly staged action scene ever.  Their ship moves so goddamn slow it blows my mind.  How all the characters are not dead escapes me.  And don't even get me started on the 'fighting.'  Ghetto-kickboxing might work for UPN, but not for a fucking movie.  And this comes from someone who likes 'Buffy.'  I don't want to hear any crap about low budgets or constraints, but there was no attempt to open the fucker up.  I really felt like I was watching a tv show-- and a bad one at that-- with black bars over the screen.  Fuck Whedon, and this movie, in the face.  The only thing more lame than this flick are the people who throw it up on a pedestal.  The reason why your coat is brown?  It's covered in bullshit.
