Title: Scariest Movie?
Post by: aurora on March 10, 2003, 03:27:40 AM
Hey all,

What movie scares or HAS scared you the most?

The Japanese version of 'The Ring' freaked me out a bit the other night!

The USA one was kinda scary... but more hollywood scary

They are the only 2 movies that have scared me in like 10 years

The sister with the warped back in 'Pet Cemetary' still freaks me out though!

When I was a kid I was really scared of 'Stephen Kings IT' The clown!!

Anyone know a really scary movie??

seriously though, any movie with clowns, ventriloquists, little dolls or toys that run around with knives killing people really does scare me.

Blood and gore is never scary, only the psychological affects me. I am too scared to watch Nosferatu and The Haunting (original version) again since seeing them ages ago, though now may be the time because I also felt freaked by 2001 and The Shining when I was 20 and those have lost their power to thrill me now.

Being I come from a religious family and I saw this movie when I was eight... The Omen.
Title: poltergeist
Post by: manhattanize on March 10, 2003, 04:31:38 PM
a movie that scared me was definitely "poltergeist" ...
i was so young when i first saw that, that i couldn't sleep with the light off for months...
though now that i'm somehow considered an adult, it doesn't scare me as much, but "the exorcist" does...  :turn-l:

The Exorcist and the Shining are tied wth scariest movie for me, though I remember how truly frightened I was after seeing The Changling... just some eerie shit... my brother and I couldn't sleep for a week.

I haven't gotten REALLY scared by a move since I was about 10 (the Freddy movies did it for me back then). The only movie that still really scares me is the Exorcist.

When I first saw Requiem for a Dream I had rented it and watched it by myself at one in the morning. That was fucking scary, I don't think I slept well that night.

Both versions of The Ring managed to scare the crap out of me, although I think the American version is better. The Shining is probably the scariest movie I've ever seen, although it only really gets to me now if I see it on the big screen.

Repulsion is pretty damn frightening. More so than Rosemary's Baby, as far as Polanski goes.

I've been meaning to see Don't Look Now for a long time; should I just go ahead and buy it?

'The Ugly'. No one's probably ever heard of it. It's a dark little New Zealand film that is truly relentless and nightmarish. I find independent films alot scarier than flashy Hollywood one's.
I haven't been really scared shitless of a movie since I was a kid. And that movie was 'Child's Play'(though anything with clowns or dolls or monsters is scary when your a kid). Chucky freaked me out then but then he's been my favourite horror character for the past few years.
I consider 'Jaws' to be one of the scariest movies ever (what other film has scared people out of swimming year after year?!).
'Alien' is creepy.
I find the opening of 'Scream' to be truly frightening.
Though it ain't a horror, 'Requiem For A Dream' is really freaky late at night. Really nightmarish (Burstyn walking around her house at night, thinking her fridge is gonna eat her etc). I dont think I could've handled seeing that one in a theatre. I find psychological thrillers more disturbing than 'scary monster chases woman to overzealous music score'.
Hollywood horror movies have been pretty crap lately (I haven't seen 'The Ring'). Seriously, 'Jason X'?, 'Ghosts of Mars'?, 'Halloween:Resurrection'? Are these films supposed to actually scare audiences or what?

I thought "Kwaidan" was pretty damn great for a film about ghost stories. The film uses your imagination intelligently rather than just blasting a few quick frames at you as most horror films do. "Carnival of Souls" is pretty grand, although it's not very frightening, it is creepy in a wonderful way. And I don't care how many people criticise it I still think "The Blair Witch Project" was pretty fucked up in a scary way. A very clever idea indeed. As for "The Ring" it did manage to have very great art direction but I could not believe how many rediculous flaws it had. *Spoilers* Why was Naomi having nose bleeds and coughing up shit after having already made a copy of the tape? Why would the 7 days have any reference to how long the girl survived in the well if she had already been fucking sufficated to death by her mother? All of it very undeveloped and cheaply written.

Warner Home Video will release a bundle of horror greats on August 5th: the original masterpiece The Haunting, Vincent Price in House of Wax (not in 3-D  :yabbse-angry: ), the killer rat-fest Of Unknown Origin, Charlton Heston in the oft-delayed The Omega Man, a new 50th anniversary edition of the Howard Hawks classic The Thing, and Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark.

Ooh, thanks. Maybe it's time to see it again. I videoed it off the tv about two years ago but never watched it cause too frightened   , but DVD would be nice.

The thing is, now I think I'm too frightened that it just won't scare me at all. I'm actually worried because I'm getting so deadened to horror. I saw The Omen the other week, another film that terrified me once upon a time, and nothing. I just yawned and got more interested in how slow and detached 70s movies are. I mean, it's ok as a movie, but I felt nothing. The other one that I've never returned to is Rosemary's Baby, but I think that might be the same story. It's depressing.  :(  Maybe I'll try Repulsion, and that thing of P's.

Ghostboy: I expected Don't Look Now to be creepy, and it is sorta, but very distancing. Though if you like that kind of effect then it'll probably get you. Anyway, the sex scene is worth it.

Kwaidan is one of the best things I've ever seen. The Japanese aesthetic is made for psychological thrills. There's another movie I saw around the same time that has these two cat women living in the middle of a bamboo forest, luring men to their doom. God, that was so beautiful, the atmosphere and the shots of the bamboo. I just can't remember the title or director and it kills me. If anyone knows it and can tell me I would love you forever.

"Jaws" & "Alien"

It seems silly now, but I saw them when they first came out and even though I knew they were just a scary movie I could not bring myself to go in the water for an entire summer.  And 2 weeks after Alien I was still uneasy about going through doorways.

Last year the Egyptian Theatre showed Alien again, with Ridley Scott..!!  It was great fun, and now it could possibly make a list of favorite comedies.

***Spoilers***Just saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time. Last I'd heard it was ridiculous and laughable, but I totally loved it. Not scary but completely intelligent and economical, and the men very, very funny. Cinematography seemed really influenced by Japanese stuff, esp. Kurosawa (all the shots through trees)? and the sound was amazing. I loved that line towards the end that went 'Aaaah! aahhhhhh!ahhhhhh!aaaah!aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh! aaaaaaaaahhh!ah!aaaaaaaaaah!ahhhhhaaaaahhhhhhahahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!ahhhhhhhhhhhhhha!aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh! aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!aaaaghhh! agggggghhh!aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!and so on and on'. Brilliant.
Great ending too: 'AAaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaahaahhhhah Haahahhhhahhhhhaaaaaahhhhahhaahahh hahhhhhaaaahhahaha...' and Leatherface left flailing and waving his big phallus around in ineffectual rage!

Any other Tobe Hoopers?

I haven't seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre in YEARS, but a friend of mine watched it recently and noted that it's sort of a horror movie encapsulation of 'The Grapes Of Wrath.' I'm going to have to rent it again to find out, but somehow that makes sense.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of my favorite movies. It's not scary...it's disturbing. The movie was great and really effective to me. The remake comming out later this year is gonna be pathetic, I fear.

Quote from: GhostboyThe original 'Alien' is getting re-released to theaters this Halloween. Exciting!

FilmJerk has learned that the October 3 re-release of Ridley Scott's Alien will include restored scenes

FilmJerk.com has learned, through contacts within Fox Films, that the film will be getting most, if not all, of the cut footage restored back into the narrative. Final details are still being worked out, but our source tells us the film's soundtrack will also be remastered to take advantage of today's digital cinema sound formats, and will be positioned as a major fall release, to play on over 2,000 screens.

The site goes on to report that if this re-release is successful, you can expect James Cameron's Aliens to get the same treatment next Spring.

The Exorcist
Eraserhead
and Strangely enough a little known film with Gary Sinise and Danny DeVito scared the living Shit out of me when I first opened into theatres...it is called
Jack The Bear...
I have No idea WHY it scared me, it just did. I was about 9 when I saw it and I think it includes a scene with danny devito's character is on excessive amounts of alcohal and drunkeness scared me when I was a little kid.

as far as the exorcist goes, there really is no equal.

i really like "deliverance" though. not really a horror film, but some of the images are unforgettably creepy.
