Title: Rent
Post by: MacGuffin on June 07, 2005, 07:53:27 PM
Quote from: Pedro the AlpacaRent trailer (http://tristan.smith.home.insightbb.com/Renttrailer.mov)

quality is ok

Release Date: November 11th, 2005 (wide)

Cast: Rosario Dawson (Mimi Marquez), Taye Diggs (Benjamin "Benny" Coffin III), Jesse L. Martin (Thomas B. "Tom" Collins), Matthew Dickens (Bohemian), Mackenzie Firgens (April), Wilson Jermaine Heredia (Angel Schunard), Aaron Lohr (Steve), Idina Menzel (Maureen Johnson), Adam Pascal (Roger Davis), Anthony Rapp (Mark Cohen), Jennifer Siebel (Alison Grey), Tracie Thoms (Joanne Jefferson), Wayne Wilcox (Gordon)

Cast Notes: With the exception of Rosario Dawson, most of the performers in this movie version are reprising their roles from the original stage rendition. Back when Spike Lee was doing casting for this movie in 2001 (before his version was scrapped by Miramax over budget concerns), Justin Timberlake and Marc Antony were among those who reportedly auditioned for roles.

Director: Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, the first two 'Harry Potter' movies)

Director Notes: Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Bamboozled, He Got Game) had been considering this film, and even held auditions, in the fall of 2001, but Miramax pulled the plug due to budget.

Screenwriter: Stephen Chbosky (The Four Corners of Nowhere) and Chris Columbus.

Based Upon: The long-running Broadway musical written and scored by Jonathan Larson (1960-1996), who died of an aortic aneurysm the night before the show's off-Broadway premiere (so he never saw the fruits of the play's success). Among the honors it has received (besides box office) are a Pulitzer Prize, four Tony's, three Obie's, and six Drama Desks. Rent is also reportedly a modernization of La Boheme.

Premise: This musical tells the stories of the lives of several New York artists of varying types and stripes (including several who are HIV positive or have AIDS), struggling to survive, over the course of a year that starts on a wintry Christmas Eve...

this will be good.  there's no way they can fuck this up when they have the original broadway cast involved.

but a spike lee's RENT would be very interesting to see.  i am super excited to see this movie.  the trailer is fuckin' great!!!!!

if Jesse L. Martin never stops smiling, that could get annoying.

I saw the musical in New York a while back. It was pretty good for what it was (an over-the-top musical). I have no idea why they're making it into a movie, except to make money as usual

i think all musicals should be over the top and grand.  the best ones seem to be anyway.  well, the money issue.  there's a HUGE fan base.  but i remember seeing the play and thinking to myself can this be translated into film.  i always think that for everything i experience.  well, the musical is all music.  i really don't think there is a moment of dialouge until the end.  so it would interesting to see see dialouge (non-singing) in RENT.

also thinking about it, i think it would quite annoying to have rentheads singing along during the movie.  i find any talking and audience noise annoying as hell, as i'm sure most of you do.   unless i was watching THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.  i remember seeing HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH in the theater and there was this guy in front of me singing along to all the songs.  pretty annoying considering i have never seen this film before.

Um....no thank you. I love musicals but I am not really up to seeing this one on the big screen.

That's all you need.

If Spike Lee was directing, I think it could have stood a chance.  He wouldn't have had much room to pole vault over the top as he likes to do sometimes, and the musical/dance sequences in his films keep promising that he would make an amazing musical.  Swapping him for Chris Columbus really ruins any chance of the movie being as compelling as the show was.

But, be it for producing or directing, this is Columbus' Oscar.

I'm sure (or I hope) that there's some good reason that this musical is so adored, but I can't guage that from these trailers so far.  I've never seen the musical, and I really don't have much interest.

They're obviously advertising towards the fans of the stage musical, since it does nothing for someone who hasn't seen it before.

the new trailer is fuckin' awesome!!!!  i can't wait to see it.  i get chills when i hear that song.  it's a great musical and i only hope chris columbus doesn't fuck it up.  i still think spike lee would've made a better director to suite this movie or maybe robert altman.

i got the soundtrack the other day for the movie.  i kinda don't like rosario dawson's "singing voice".  it's not very strong and i do think the rest of the cast suffers for it.  also they don't do one of my favorite songs on the soundtrack, "christmas bells"  i really fuckin' they do it in the movie because it's a pretty awesome scene in the play.  i dunno, still excited about november 23rd though!!

i saw RENT tonight.  i loved it!  it was fairly cheesy but still very enjoyable.  i totally think a better director would have done a lot more with it.  i had a smile on my face the entire time nonetheless.  kinda bummed they didn't play my favorite song, "christmas bells".

a really mediocre movie at best.. this is another lazy stage-to-screen musical adaptation.  on that note there's nothing wrong with the movie that you can't expect to be wrong before you go into it.  it's chris columbus, and he's still his lame self.  performances are good for the most part though you can tell the actors are trained for the stage, not film (minus, say, taye diggs and that one guy on law and order) but adam pascal is painful to watch and rosario dawson, as nice as it is to see her on screen and dancing the way she does, isn't very good.  i love the musical so it was hard for me not to respond but the film's as interesting and purposeful as Jarhead... in that it isn't at all.

there is a scene that looks exactly like a bon jovi music video towards the end of the movie that, when taken out of context, is absolutely hilarious.

I've never seen Rent, but with the idea of going from stage to screen, I really wish they had gotten another director.  Somebody with more visual flare, with more theatricality, with more... boldness and baudiness, even.  Someone like Spike Lee (oh wait, what's that? he WAS going to direct it but he wanted to take his time and the producers were like no man we want someone who's gonna do it fast so they split over "creative differences?"  aww, that's nice).

I think the two Harry Potter movies are the only two well-reviewed movies Columbus has ever done.  Home Alone I like because of the nostalgia aspect, but that actually wasn't very well reviewed either, and I still would've rather had that be directed by somebody else.

Eh.  I don't really care that much since I have no attachment to Rent, but I always get peeved when producers eschew artists for hacks-for-hire.  It's like going to a hooker because you don't want to take the time and effort to cultivate a relationship.  Fast and easy.

Columbus is what has kept me from giving a crap about this movie.  The first two Harry Potters were faithful adaptations of the books, but didn't feel like too much more than that, entertaining as they were.  And whatever else I've liked of his was from when I was in elementary school.
